I think most of us are ready to move on to 2021 and have high hopes that this year will be better, holds more promise, and frankly more freedom, safety and health.

We are glad Birmingham Parent is still here. I don’t mind telling you it’s been tough and quite a ride, but we are here! This is our ninth edition of THE GUIDE, and it’s hard to believe we’ve been producing this “parent handbook” of the Birmingham area for so long.

Parents still need this information – no matter what is happening in our world. In fact, maybe it is needed more than ever. Hopefully this is your BEST connection to important names, numbers, addresses and websites in the Birmingham area. For a parent, grandparent or caregiver, this Guide offers easy access to all these numbers in one place, and it’s in print and online, all year long for you.

The Cook Museum of Natural Science opened in Decatur, Alabama in June 2019, but it has a long history of how it was born through four generations of the Cook family, owners of Cook’s Pest Control.

John Cook Sr. took his insect collection to the public in 1968, something that had originally been used for employee training, but many teachers and school groups wanted access to it for educational purposes, so he decided to make it public. Cook was fascinated with creation and all that it entails.

The collection later grew to include southern wildlife, and later rocks, minerals, fish, coral, sea life and more. A 5,000 square foot building was constructed in the 1980s and housed the museum, which had welcomed more than 750,000 visitors.

The family decided it was time to reinvent the museum as more of an educational experience, so they closed the doors in 2017 to construct the new Cook Museum of Natural Science, now a non-profit 501(c)(3).

Today, the new state-of-the art, hands-on facility means more education and fun for future generations, and this new facility can compete with the best of other children’s museums, with a friendly design, fun for all ages and an inviting flow of information as you walk through.

Enjoy numerous family-friendly, hands-on exhibits, climb through the cave and other interactive exhibits and there’s even an indoor playground to let off a little energy. All the while, you are learning about nature.

The exhibits are divided into nine different galleries.

“Discover” offers an introduction to the museum and such wildlife as bees, gators and more. “Looking Up” is all about the sky and earth’s relationship to it. Touch a real meteorite!

“Foundations” is about the earth and how everything interacts with each other. Visit the hands-on sand table with everything from snow-capped mountains and streams to an erupting volcano. This is a favorite for kids and adults alike.

“Rivers and Streams” is pretty self-explanatory, but includes such fun things as beavers and other wildlife. “Forests” includes the obvious, of course, and the bird exhibit. “Wonderful World of Insects” includes terrariums, an ant colony and a fun playground for toddlers.

“Oceans” features a coral reef and multiple aquariums to showcase fish and the lovely jellyfish. “Caves” features all sorts of cave creatures, as well as a fun walk-thru cave with stalactites and stalagmites. “Arctic/Desert” teaches about the differences in the two ecosystems including the animals.

Of course, you’d expect some great information and exhibits about insects from Cook’s, and yes, they have that. But you can learn about wildlife, fish, sea life, coral and all sorts of critters and ecosystems with great interactive and well-explained exhibits, including a beautiful aquarium area. The museum staff is informative and can share fun facts and answer any questions you may have.

The learning doesn’t stop when you walk out of the museum. The museum website, www.cookmuseum.org, is

full of educational information, worksheets, videos, coloring pages, “two-minute science” and more, a great help to teachers and homeschoolers, as well as kids who just want to know more.

Throughout the year there are other fun opportunities at the museum. Whether it’s a birthday party, a field trip, or one of their educational and fun camps (which are offered for many different age groups), there’s much to see and do here.

While visiting the museum, check out the great gift shop full of beautiful items, educational toys and fun stuff. Have a bite to eat at Nature’s Table, with locally grown, organic and even gluten-free food sure to fit almost any special diet. They even have smoothies.

Those looking for an event venue will find Monarch Hall at the museum will hold more than 300 people. Catering is available, too.

Five Reasons to Get Your Kids Outside to Play

Your child spikes a fever, or is having trouble stopping throwing up. Maybe Today’s kids typically spend several hours a day immersed in low-sensory, pixelated landscapes rather than outdoors playing in the mud, climbing trees, examining bugs, rolling down hills or making up games.

As a consequence, kids are less focused, get frustrated more easily, and struggle with more advanced social skills like negotiation, problem-solving and conflict resolution.

“Technology is addicting and it’s keeping kids from engaging the senses, developing the muscles and all of the fundamental things that help children develop properly,” says pediatric occupational therapist Angela Hanscom, author of Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident and Capable Children. “We’re at the point where we are seeing kids have pretty significant sensory issues because it’s almost like a sensory deprivation of our environment.”

Research finds that time outdoors improves our overall fitness, helps us sleep better, enhances creativity and cognitive skills, boosts our ability to fight disease, and even helps children with ADHD and anxiety better regulate their moods.

Here are five great reasons to get kids outside:

Regulates emotions. “Exercise and nature are the prescriptions that have helped my kid,” says Tammy Muzrall, whose son Nathan, 11, struggles with anxiety and social issues. “Nature is calming. It’s healing. It naturally rebalances you. All you have to do is walk in it.”

About four years ago, she began taking Nathan to a forest school near her home. Facilitated by Kelly Daniels, a Shinrin-Yoku forest therapy guide trained through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy, the school is situated on 10 acres and invites people of all ages to engage with nature through play, exploration and awareness.

Our bodies are inherently designed to interact with our natural environment. Movement and outdoor play help regulate emotions. Physical activity strengthens the vestibular system, which is where the body manages balance and spatial orientation. The vestibular system feeds into the limbic system, which is the body’s center for emotions.

“If a child tends to be hyperactive, or if they are moving a lot or really fidgety, that means they need to move more. That movement will help their body to naturally regulate their emotions,” Hanscom explains.

Fosters social skills. Nathan enjoys both the social and playful aspects of the forest school. “To find other like-minded kids who are wired like us was a breath of fresh air,” Muzrall says. “He loves jumping in the pond and climbing the trees. And, sit spots are his favorite.”

During “sit spots,” each child finds a patch of grass, a tree or any spot that appeals to them where they can sit alone and notice their surroundings.

They don’t have to sit perfectly still. They can dig around in the dirt, watch for wild animals or listen to the birds.

Daniels says children often arrive at her forest school hyper, fidgety, nervous and sometimes cantankerous. After circling up, talking and playing a game, the kids, who often range from six to 11 years old, do the sit spot exercise.

“They are experiencing nature in a slow enough way where they go: ‘Oh. I remember. This is what it feels like to be peaceful.’ They almost don’t even know what that feels like any more,” Daniels says.

After 15 to 20 minutes, the kids circle up again and share their experience if they’d like. One child might report seeing a wild turkey with its babies while another might talk about a snail crawling up her arm.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS & ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE, ORLANDO Kids of all ages, teens and adults will absolutely love Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure (www.universalorlando.com/) in nearby Orlando. In fact, it might be a favorite!

Constantly adding new attractions, one of the main attractions for us in BOTH parks was the Harry Potter/Hogwarts sections inspired by the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling. In both parks, you step into a storybook time, with shops, eateries, butter beer, potions shops, and terrific rides.

Enjoy Flight of the Hippogriff (formerly the Flying Unicorn), Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts at Islands of Adventure. Then you can ride the Hogwarts Express, a magical train that takes you back and forth from Hogsmeade’s to Diagon Alley in the other park!

But Universal parks have so much more than just Harry Potterinspired features. You could spend days here with Race through New York with Jimmy Fallon, The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman, The Simpsons Ride, the Transformers 3D ride, Shrek 4-D, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, Wood Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster (for the younger ones), Revenge of the Mummy, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit and so much more for all ages!

Then take in City Walk, the area outside and between the two parks for great shopping, wonderful restaurants and even a movie theatre and putt-putt golf on site. There’s even night life here for the adults.

WILD FLORIDA When we visited Kissimmee recently, we didn’t even know Wild Florida (www.wildfl.com) existed, but it’s now one of our favorite attractions. It’s the world’s only airboat, gator and drive-thru 85-acre safari park, and it was well worth the short drive from Kissimmee in nearby Keanansville. Keep in mind all the airboat tours, animal encounters and drive-thru safari park experiences include admission to the gator park and require reservations in advance.

Our one-hour airboat tour was exciting, educational and fun. We saw fascinating birds, wildlife and especially bald eagles and their nests, all in their undisturbed, natural habitat. We enjoyed seeing the baby gators, and the drive-thru safari was great fun, ending it with feeding giraffes! You can also book various interactive animal encounters and see the Exotic Animal Show. Hold a two-toed sloth!

Daniels says the children return to the circle “almost reverent. They become respectful of other kids’ speaking. They start to listen.

By the end of the camp, they’re mellow, hanging out, respectful & kind.”

Even 30 minutes a day spent sitting in your yard, witnessing nature in action is therapeutic for adults and kids alike.

Promotes creativity. Kids often complain that spending time outside is boring or uncomfortable. Hanscom suggests encouraging your kids to get inspired by your environment. Try throwing in a few age-appropriate supplies and tools to rev up their imaginations.

“Place out different adult items like trays or kitchenware by mud puddles,” she says. “Bring out baskets with pulleys, string and scissors, or planks and trucks by a slow-moving river. Giving them materials quickens the process of being creative and having ideas of what to do outside.”

Invite friends for a day of outdoor play rather than just for a few hours, which will give kids time to inspire each other and come up with ideas for their discoveries. For example, how many ways can they use a stick? One child might use it to scratch letters in the dirt while another begins building a fort.

Cultivates environmental stewards. Jodi Crutchfield, a mom of two children Addi, 9, and Sammy, 6, believes in fostering an appreciation and empathy for the world outside with her children.

“They have learned how cool animals, bugs and spiders are. We can play with them a little bit, but we don’t hurt them and we put them back where we found them,” Crutchfield says. “They understand the idea of leave no trace. They pick up garbage when we are on hikes and can spot a piece of garbage 100 yards away. I was so proud last summer when both kids finished a week-long camp and both earned ‘Most Connected to the Environment’ award within their camp troops.”

Enhances mindfulness. Time spent in nature grounds us in the present moment giving us space free of distractions where we can focus on the sights, sounds and smells surrounding us. • Drink water often – before, during and after exercise to be sure your body gets enough fluid.

• Stop exercising and consult your doctor if you experience pain, vaginal bleeding, dizziness or feeling faint, shortness of breath, irregular or rapid heart beat, difficulty walking, pain in your back or pubic area, or uterine contractions.

Even with its physical and emotional benefits, maintaining an exercise during pregnancy should always be under the supervision of a physician. You should always check with your doctor before beginning or continuing an exercise regimen to evaluate the risks and benefits.

Should you try Urgent Care, or should you visit the emergency room?

Dr. Eric Jorge is a pediatric emergency medicine fellow at Children’s of Alabama. He’s seen children come to the emergency department who could have been treated at home. “It’s always a good place to start if your child is sick or has a fever, to call your on-call pediatrician or nurse,” Dr. Jorge says. “They can help guide you as to whether it’s appropriate to seek care in the emergency department or not.”

You should always take your child to the emergency department in a true emergency, according to Jorge. These signs include: Go to emergency room for:

• serious injury

• persistent vomiting

• trouble breathing

• not drinking enough, not urinating enough

• unusual sleepiness or confusion

• a head injury with vomiting

• eye injury

• serious burns

• ingested poison or unknown substance Call 911 if your child:

• isn’t breathing or is turning blue

• is unconscious after a fall

• is having a seizure

• has a serious allergic reaction

• has broken a bone that sticks out through the skin

• is choking

• has a large cut that is bleeding uncontrollably But an urgent care facility may be just the ticket in a number of situations, especially when the pediatrician’s office is full or after their normal hours. “With an on-site lab, x-ray and pharmacy, our licensed pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners are equipped to treat everything from broken bones to lacerations needing stitches to strep, RSV, flu and more,” says Ann Peacock of Urgent Care for Children.

One of the most important questions a parent should ask themselves when deciding whether to take their child to Urgent Care for Children or the emergency room is if their child’s illness or injury is life-threatening, Peacock adds. “We at UC4C are able to provide care for kiddos with non-life-threatening medical needs, but on the other hand, the emergency room should be utilized when children face life-threatening conditions.”

• cuts to fingers, feet or face

BIRTH ORDER: PAYOFFS AND PITFALLS

Where children fall in the family line can have a tremendous impact on their development, emotional experiences, interpersonal relationships – even academic performance.

Birth order is a concept that suggests children of a particular family position share some of the same experiences, which may cause them to take on similar attributes.

But is it a valid theory?

And if so, what can parents learn from it?

Meri Wallace, Brooklyn, NY-based MSW, child and family therapist and author of Birth Order Blues, thinks it’s a concept worth considering. “It isn’t the sole factor in the shaping of a child’s life, nor does it mean there will always be definitive character traits and outcomes.

But understanding how birth order affects children is key to a family’s well being,” she says.

Dr. Michael Gamel-McCormick, professor for the Department of Individual and Family Studies at the University of Delaware, agrees. “When balanced with the child’s individual personality, preference and style, birth order is a good tool parents can use to reflect on family dynamics and childhood experiences.”

This is what Karen Kolek, mother of three, did. “When I read a book about birth order, I saw some classic traits in my children, particularly my oldest,” she says, referring to nine-year-old Kyle.

“He’s very academically oriented and has perfectionist tendencies and high expectations for himself.”

This is typical of many first-born children, explains Wallace. “Because most

There are variables which hang in the balance and must be considered. They are as follows: • Parenting style. The philosophy by which parents raise their children can greatly affect traditional birth order traits and tendencies.

There are typically four parenting styles: 1. authoritarian, which has many limits and few choices; 2. permissive, characterized by a child- dominated home with few limitations; 3. yoyo, which is inconsistent and swings from authoritarian to permissive; and 4. authoritative, which provides consistent guidance with reality discipline when needed.

• Parent’s birth order position. Where parents fall in their family line of origin can affect how they interact with their children. Parents with children of the same birth order position may consciously or unconsciously over-identify with that child. This can lead to either excess pressure or a softened approach, particularly if the child is of the same gender or temperament.

Parents may also view children of a different birth order position in light of their own sibling relationship experiences.

• Family circumstances. Family factors that can affect traditional birth order traits and tendencies include the number of children in the family; sibling gender; spacing between children; parental or sibling disability, illness or death; adoption; divorce; family blending and socio-economic level.

Experts agree individualized time centered on a child’s interests is one of the best ways to diminish sibling rivalry and help children feel more confident about their parents’ love. Another way to decrease sibling strife is to help children establish their own identity by encouraging them to pursue their own interests.

Appreciating and celebrating a child’s individuality is, after all, the key to helping children grow into confident, well-rounded adults—no matter where they fall in the family line.

Whitney Hoffman, mother of 11-year-old James and 8-year-old John, found this to be true. “When James was born, he was not only our first child but the first grandchild on both sides of the family, so everything was focused on him,” she recalls. “Even after John was born, we spent extra time with James so he would know he was still special.”

All this attention may seem like an advantage, but there are disadvantages too. Most first-time moms and dads are inexperienced with regard to parenting and may place unrealistic expectations on their children, which in turn, could cause a child to become driven or have perfectionist tendencies.

“In a typical family pattern, parents who have had one child generally get more comfortable in the parenting role,” says GamelMcCormick. “By the time the second, third or fourth ones come along they ease up on standards and expectations, and interact differently with later-born children.”

Parental interaction is one factor that plays into birth order. Sibling relationship is another. “When there’s a small age gap between children it can promote closeness,” says Wallace. “At the same time, it creates a strong rivalry because they each have similar needs and are vying for the same kind of attention.”

Younger siblings, she says, may also wrestle with identity issues.

They may see themselves as an extension of their older sibling, but they may also feel overshadowed and inadvertently search for their own areas to shine.

This is one of Hoffman’s concerns. “I think John’s identity is somewhat tied to his brother’s,” she says. “He looks up to him as a hero and even seems a little lost when he’s not around.”

But John also picks on James in a rivalry way. “The boys have plenty of opportunities to play together, but sometimes James wants to be alone,” Hoffman continues. “If he’s doing something like a video game, John is right there and wants to do it too. That’s when we have problems.”

The Hoffmans aren’t the only ones who feel the sibling squeeze.

From time to time 7-year-old Conner Kolek laments about being the middle child.

“Sometimes Conner says, ‘I’m not the oldest and I’m not the youngest,’ so I turn it around and tell him he has the best of both worlds,” says Kolek. “He gets to do big kid things with his brother and he still has a younger sister to play with.”

But according to Kolek, Conner’s complaint is really a cry for attention. “I didn’t have the time with him that I had with Kyle or that I have now with Julianna (age 5). Even though he would never admit it,

Juggling Extracurricular Activities:

Five Ways to Make it More Manageable

School mornings are busy, but an experienced mom knows the real rush is after school when the evening is packed with extracurricular activities. One child has scouts, another has piano lessons, and two have soccer practice on opposite sides of town.

As a mom of six, I have survived busy weeks full of extracurricular activities and a calendar that can only be described as complicated.

Whether you have two or 10 kids, here are some tips from a mom with a busy family.

LIMIT ACTIVITIES — The best way to keep your calendar from getting too full is not to fill it. Try cutting back on the activities you allow your child to sign up for. Practice time can be reduced by allowing kids only one sport per season. However, sports aren’t the only activity that can take up a lot of time.

Theater, music, scouts, and dance can also fill your free time. If your child has interests in both sports and the arts try allowing one sport and one other activity at a time.

Limiting activities will leave more time for rest and time at home.

TAG TEAM — When multiple kids’ activities

conflict, split up the time. Have one parent take a child to a birthday party while the other attends the ball game for another child. Use the help of others, particularly for practices and rehearsals. Set up a carpool with other families and take turns giving kids rides to and from to limit your time in the car. Don’t feel guilty if you cannot be at every single event. If you miss one here or there, you can attend next time. Your child will not remember if you were at every game, just that you made the effort to be there the majority of the time.

COMMAND CENTER — A carefully maintained family calendar is key to keeping everyone organized and where they need to be on time. Some families like to have a large calendar in a central location in the home, like a command center. Others may like to use technology to track their comings and goings. Each family will find what method works best for them; the important part is that it is accurate and up-to-date.

PROTECT YOUR DOWN TIME — Families who

are constantly on the go need to be protective of their down time. Having time for resting and relaxation is necessary to recharge and

reconnect. Busy families may find it helpful to schedule family time on the master calendar so that the time doesn’t get filled up with other activities.

PLAN AHEAD — Once you have your

activities limited and your calendar set, the best way to survive the busiest days is to plan ahead as much as possible. For busy nights, plan easy on-the-go meals and snacks. Freezer meals, crock pot recipes, and simple weeknight dinners that are prepped and prepared ahead of time will save you a lot of worry about getting your family properly fed and to practice on time.

Pack up as many items as possible the night before so that you are not rushing around at the last minute trying to locate lost shoes and sports gear.

There are multiple benefits to participation in extracurricular activities, but overdoing it can cancel out many of them.

Choose activities that your children truly enjoy and make sure there is still time to enjoy time together doing things you love outside of those activities.
