COVER SPONSORS ODYSSEY EARLY SCHOOLS Odyssey was created by educators who dreamed of opening an early learning center where children could be nurtured and taught by a highly trained and loving staff. That dream was realized when our Inverness school opened in 1995, and then again in 2001, with the opening of our second school in Trace Crossings. Odyssey’s goal is to create a life-long love of learning. We have developed our own age-appropriate curriculum, specifically designed
to introduce each age grouping to language, reading, math, science and more, so that your child will possess a strong foundation for Kindergarten and beyond. Additionally, we guarantee teachers with four-year education degrees in all preschool classrooms and offer exceptional child-to-teacher ratios. At our schools, you can watch your child’s entire day in live, streaming, HD video over the Internet, through an individual, secure connection linked directly to your child’s class-

COVER SPONSORS APPLAUSE ADVERTISER DANCEWEAR Applause Dancewear, a retail dancewear store has just celebrated its 39th year in business, located in the same place it opened in 1981, and still family owned and operated since the first day. They carry everything a dancer could possibly want for any kind of dancing. Applause also carries liturgical wear for church groups, amazing gymnastics leotards for every age, and batons, boots and rhinestones for
dancelines and majorettes. The store was originally opened by Buddy and Cindy Wade when Cindy was the choreographer of The Star Spangled Girls at Homewood High School. After managing the store while receiving her marketing degree at UAB, their daughter Katie set her sights on owning Applause and building the business. With her parents’ permission, Katie took over the store in 1992. She has continued to staff
the store with dancers, knowing that having employees who have practical application in the items they are selling and the experience to back the products will always make a customer more comfortable and secure when purchasing specialty items. She knows as a mom, how overwhelming it can be to purchase items for your children that you may not have had your own experience with.

RONALD McDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF ALABAMA Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama (RMHCA) serves 73 families every night, providing them with a “home-away-fromhome” while their children receive medical care in Birmingham. In addition to providing a comfortable bedroom with a private bathroom, we surround families with love and support from volunteers, staff and other guest families who share the same hopes and fears. We provide volunteer-provided meals, family
program and activities, indoor and outdoor play areas, laundry facilities, WiFi and much more so that our guest families can concentrate on what is most important – their child’s health. Our two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, located at UAB Women & Infants Center and DCH Regional Medical Center (Tuscaloosa), provide an inviting oasis of calm for families, while increasing their ability to advocate for their child.
They can find comfort, care and support without leaving their child’s side. We may not be able to make the medicine taste better or take away painful treatments. But by keeping families together and close to their child’s medical team, RMHCA and its supporters can help lessen the burden and ensure families have the stability and resources to get and keep their child healthy and happy. How Parents Can Show The Love Equally To Each Very Different Child By Jennifer Lynch Children need love and attention from their parents, but having two or more children can pose a challenge for moms and dads to spread the warmth evenly. Sometimes this imbalance occurs when siblings are sharply different in terms of talents and personality. Jennifer Lynch, an educator, child advocate and author of the children’s book Livi and Grace (www.jenniferlynchbooks.com), says giving children equal attentiveness is important to their happiness and starts with parents appreciating their uniqueness. “Children are unique, unknown little people waiting to be revealed,” Lynch says. “Parents need to ask themselves, how can I embrace these differences and make each child feel and recognize their beautiful uniqueness? “Let the mystery of who they are and who they are meant to be unfold in their own authentic way, however awesome or peculiar it is. Everyone is different and it’s important to make every child feel special, important and loved.” Lynch offers these tips to help parents balance their attention on multiple children who have different interests, personalities, and talents: • Give them quality one-on-one time. Consistently taking time to give your children one-on-one time, Lynch says, shows them you care and that they are important. “This means no phones, no distractions, and being 100 percent present with your child,” Lynch says. “Make eye contact, ask questions, and just listen and let them lead at whatever activity or interaction is taking place. This makes them feel safe, in control and loved.” • Celebrate their uniqueness. An imbalance in parental attention can lead to siblings comparing themselves — never a good idea because that can create jealousy and low selfesteem, thus accentuating a sibling rivalry. At the same time, children may think the parent is showing favoritism. “Susie may be faster than Johnny, but Johnny may be a brilliant chess player,” Lynch says. “So when they begin to compare themselves with their siblings, take that
12 | birminghamparent | THE GUIDE 2020
conversation and turn it into how great it is that they each have a place that shines. And bring in more examples of how their differences are beautiful and important. Set up scenarios showing examples of how those differences are good.” • Show your love for them. “You obviously love your children, so don’t be afraid to show it,” Lynch says. “Give them that authentic shout-out, or the gentle, grace- filled redirection and encouragement when they need to try again at something, whether it’s poor behavior or just losing a game. Leave the shame out of it.” • Validate them but be authentic. When it comes to praise, Lynch says quality is much more important than quantity. “Children can recognize a fake compliment a mile away,” Lynch says. “They know if you’ve really seen them or not. They know if it’s from the heart or just surface praise.” “In these ways, showing appreciation for who each of them are will help your children develop confidence in themselves,” Lynch says. “They will take your lead and begin to find other amazing things about themselves and their friends. Making each of your very different children feel truly loved and valued will help them grow up to be happy and responsible adults.” Jennifer Lynch, author of the children’s book Livi and Grace (www. jenniferlynchbooks.com), is an educator and child advocate who serves as a guardian ad litem, a person appointed to represent a child’s interests in a court case. She has worked as a special education teacher for an elementary school and as a preschool teacher. In addition, Lynch created the “You Are Good” brand T-shirts and other products for sale and for donations. Thousands of the shirts have been donated to children and teenagers in the system. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas A&M University.

Did you know that playing and spending time outdoors has many benefits for children? Outdoor play is a multi-sensory experience. Playing in the backyard, at the park or on the playground provides input to all of the senses in our body such as aromas from plants, the sight of nature and feeling unique textures, just to name a few. Outdoor play also encourages body awareness, balance and strength as kids navigate climbing ladders, running through the yard, sliding or swinging. Time spent away from screens and in a natural environment supports improvement in physical health since it is the perfect place for kids to be active to their heart’s content. Outdoor play lets kids explore the natural environment and participate in safe risk-taking, which gives them to chance to be inventive and imaginative with their play. During these times, they are allowed the chance to create games, problem solve in different ways, to interact with equipment or toys and experience social development with their peers. Furthermore, playing outside can also help increase attention spans as kids become more self-directed in their choices and are more likely to stay with a task they are curious about for a longer period of time! -Courtesy of Child’sPlay Therapy Center, Anne Abernathy, MS, OTR/L

RECYCLING GUIDE
When it comes to recycling the right way, most people may not understand the specific logistics behind the process. There is a recycling crisis in the United States, says Tim Sullivan, manager of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Facilities Support Services, which oversees UAB Recycling. China’s recycling businesses stopped purchasing millions of tons of America’s plastic waste in early 2018, and the U.S. does not have the systems to collect and capacity to recycle such large amounts of plastic trash. Consequently, much of it is disposed of in landfills and incinerators, which creates pollution and wastes resources. Birmingham has only one plant for processing recyclable materials, Birmingham Recycle and Recovery in Avondale, and UAB Recycling is a collection point for that plant. Because both the campus recycling bins and the drop-off center collect a large volume of recyclables, Sullivan says, it is important to recycle only those items BRR accepts. “When nonrecyclable items are thrown into UAB’s recycling bins, it dirties up what we refer to as ‘the stream,’” Sullivan explains. “It keeps waste from being sorted and recycled properly, which can lead to perfectly recyclable materials’ inadvertently being sent to landfills or to be burnt. That means more wasted plastic on land and in our oceans.” UAB recycles: • No. 1 plastic, which includes water and soft drink bottles • Office paper of any color • Newspapers • Non-food-contaminated flattened cardboard boxes • Magazines • Non-food-contaminated paper items such as paper bags, mail, envelopes and folders • Aluminum cans Take these items to the UAB Recycling Center only: • Rinsed steel food cans • Used cooking oil and grease The UAB Recycling Center accepts these items and is open 7-9 a.m. and 4-5:30 p.m. Monday and Thursday. You’ve probably wondered if your child is gifted.
Identifying the Gifted Child: What Parents Need to Know By Jan Pierce, M.Ed.
At one time or another you’ve probably wondered if your child is gifted. Maybe he can identify all the birds in your neighborhood. Or maybe your daughter is only four years old and already reading. How can you know for sure if your child is an exceptional learner? The truth is that in any classroom setting there are probably one or two children who are gifted, at least in one subject area. Additionally, there’s another handful of children who are eager, bright learners, but not gifted by academic definitions. Just what is a gifted child? Educators have wrestled with the definition for decades, but there is agreement on general traits that help us recognize talented learners. The National Association of Gifted Children says: “Gifted individuals are those who demonstrate outstanding levels of competence in one or more domains.” Gifted children have high intelligence as measured by standardized testing. They learn information easily and remember it well. They have large vocabularies and are able to grasp abstract ideas. They are often creative and may be seen as leaders. They may excel in the visual or performing arts. They’re often ahead of others in hands-on physical skills. If you’ve noticed advanced learning patterns in your child’s early years, you may want to do a little systematic information-gathering to identify aptitudes. Here are some ways to begin putting the pieces of the identification puzzle together. You may find out that your son or daughter is a high-performing, engaged learner, but not gifted. Or you may find that he or she truly is gifted and would benefit from an enhanced learning environment. Behavior at Home Children are usually most comfortable in their home environment. Here they will “be themselves.” Does your child have endless questions? Does he actually search out answers through books or hands-on experiments? Is he learning to read easily and quickly? Does she use words above and beyond her peers? Is she very aware of information presented by adults and can she engage in a conversation at their level? Does he have a vivid imagination and a keen sense of humor? Does he make an
effort to record information, chart or graph it? Map it? Does she create new worlds filled with characters? Can she lose herself in books? Many children do some of these things. The gifted child will actually live in a world of heightened awareness and consider questions the average learner does not. Advanced learners enjoy working independently and can often sustain their work for a long time. They enjoy freedom to explore, make new connections and add to their knowledge base. They’re excited by intellectual challenges. Successes at School Many gifted children excel in their school setting. They get the highest grades, do the best work and “stand out” in the crowd. Sadly, some gifted students don’t function well at all in the rigid structure of a classroom schedule. They may seem disinterested or uncooperative because they need freedom to learn in their own unique ways and on their own timeline. Teachers will quickly pick up on advanced reading and writing ability and on logic and reasoning above the norm. It’s important to distinguish between the bright learner and the truly gifted learner. This chart, created by Diane Heacox and widely quoted in literature about gifted learners, compares the learning styles and abilities of these two distinct groups. Bright Gifted Knows the answers Asks the questions Has good ideas May have wild, silly ideas Learns with ease Already knows Copies accurately Creates new designs Absorbs information Manipulates informatio Pleased with perfection Can be self-critical Enjoys sequential learning Thrives on complexity Enjoys peers Prefers adult company Answers accurately Discusses in detail, elaborates From the classroom teacher’s perspective, the gifted child can present quite a challenge. Even extending lessons may not be enough to meet needs. The gifted learner is beyond the group, probably isn’t motivated by grades and learns information in one or two hearings. He will be frustrated by moving one step at a time with slower learners. Testing If you find your child on the gifted child side of the above chart, you may want to pursue testing and other means of evaluating potential. Schools generally have set schedules for administering standardized tests to identify their gifted population. Their screening may begin with an intelligence test, but will often include surveys completed by teachers and parents, anecdotal information and portfolios of completed work. In some cases the surveys used will include items from a broader understanding of learning which gives a child gifted in specific areas such as music and art the chance to shine. Placement in Gifted Programs Don’t be disappointed if your child goes through a testing process and is determined not to need a gifted learning environment. In truth, bright children experience the most success in their traditional classroom setting. They enjoy learning and don’t deal with the challenges of the gifted population. Your goal is to know your child and to support his or her learning journey. You can find more helpful information on identifying the gifted child from the following resources. www.gifted-children.com www.gtworld.org www.hoagiesgifted.org Jan Pierce, M.Ed., is a retired teacher and freelance writer. Toy Rotation: Reduce Toy Clutter in Six Easy Steps
Reduce Toy Clutter
By Sarah Lyons
The holidays are over, and likely you have a lot of extra toys in your home about now. “Toy clutter” is a problem many will face in 2020. From the toddler years when blocks, push toys, and board books seem to be scattered down the hallway to the school age years where kids collect tiny Legos, matchbox cars, and Barbie dolls, clutter remains an ongoing issue. A toy rotation may be one way to fight this problem. Step 1: Gather In the main play area, gather all the toys to the center of the room. You are making a bigger mess at first, but this will help you get organized in the long run. “It may be best to start this process when the kids are in bed or out of the house.” says mom, Kara Thomas. The process may go quicker and smoother sans children. However, if that isn’t an option, get the kids involved and have them help bring toys to the center of the room. Step 2: Reduce Go through the pile you have gathered and throw away broken toys and items that have missing pieces. Take out any toys that are no longer age appropriate. Lastly, pick out toys that the children don’t play with. Jill Miller, mom of two, says “We purge things every year for the annual neighborhood garage sale. It also gives us a little cash boost.” If your family is not up for the work that goes into selling items, consider donating them to a local charity or passing them along to a friend. Step 3: Sort Once you have reduced the number of toys, you should be left with age-appropriate toys that your children enjoy. Now divide toys into three categories: thinking toys (puzzles, board games, shape sorters), pretend play (play food, dolls, blocks), and toys that encourage gross motor play (balls, push toys, cars). When you have the items sorted, there should be three piles, one for each category.

• Participate in garage sales or consignment sales “We sell toys they are done playing with.” says mom of five Deanna Brown. • Pass them along to a friend or a family in need. • Donate to a local charity. • Give them to the church nursery or a preschool - many times an area church or preschool may be in need of used toys in good condition for their classrooms. • Take them to grandma’s house - now the kids will have something to play with when they visit. • Try the Konmari Method using the book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. “I’m using Konmari Method on the toys and asking ‘Does this bring my kids joy or me joy?’ If not then I’m getting rid of it,” says Kassie, mom of three. • Throw out the “junk.” Get rid of cheap toys from fast food kid’s meals and carnivals. These toys rarely offer many hours of play time and often break easily. Continued to page 33.

Toy Rotation
Step 4: Divide Divide toys into three to four groups. Each group should have equal amounts of toys from the categories of thinking toys, pretend play and gross motor toys. Place each group of toys into a large box and label it. Plastic tubs work well and can double as a toy box. Step 5: Store Once the toys are sorted and separated into three to four boxes, keep one out and put the remaining boxes in storage. Make sure you have easy access to the stored boxes so you can rotate them frequently. Step 6: Rotate Decide how long to keep a box out for play. Some families switch weekly, while some switch every two to three weeks, and some may switch every month or longer. Choose a time that works for your family. When each box is out, take note of what toys are most popular and which items get ignored. As you are packing up the box, remove the items that didn’t get played with and donate or sell them. By implementing a toy rotation system, you will be able to cut down on toy clutter in your living space because three-fourths of the toys will be in storage at any given time. In addition to a tidier home, there will also be less mess for kids to clean up and a better chance for all toys to be utilized.

Brayden (BB) Butler is right. His healthcare team is among the best in the nation! While practicing a motocross jump, BB fell and suffered a brain bleed. It would take half a year and surgeons, physicians, nurses and therapists to help him recover. Fortunately, for BB and thousands of other children, Children’s of Alabama is ranked among the top hospitals for children by U.S. News & World Report.

HOW TO MIX TODDLERS AND PUPPIES
(This is part 1 of a two part article. Look for the follow up piece in the February 2020 issue of Birmingham Parent.) I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – if your child is younger than eight or nine years old and you get a dog, you’re in for a challenge! This is even more the case when that dog is a puppy. Many pet owners want their children to grow up with a dog – as the mom of a 10-year-old boy, I totally get this, but when your child is a toddler, you may find yourself in a world of hurt and wishing you hadn’t gotten this teething, jumping, mouthy bundle of fluff. What’s a mom/dog mom to do? First, supervision is your best friend. It’s your job to protect your child from your dog and your dog from your child. Most pups would never purposefully try to hurt anyone, but in a split second, your puppy can steal food from your toddler’s hand and injure him by accident, nip him in the face if he goes in for a hug (dogs don’t typically like hugs), or knock him down out of exuberance. Given that young puppies don’t really know commands – and don’t yet have the maturity and training experience to perform commands with the high-level distraction of a toddler whose face is covered in spaghetti sauce – tremendous patience is going to be required of you, the owner. Here are some things that need to be prevented for everyone’s safety and sanity: • Knocking the child down • Nipping the child’s hands or face
By Rebecca Mason, CPDT-KA, CTDI, M.Ed.
• Licking food off of the child’s hands or face • Playing with or chewing on the child’s toys • Picking up dropped pacifiers or blankets • Nosing around in the diaper pail • Running out doors if the child opens them • Being injured by (or becoming afraid of) the child This is just the beginning! This is asking a LOT of a puppy – even of an adult dog. You’ll need to keep in mind what might be reasonable expectations. Training is very helpful and should be started as early as possible, with an emphasis on come, leave it, drop it, off, wait at doorways or baby gates and stay. However, a dog who can come or stay in a quiet room is not going to be able to do these things with 100 percent accuracy when there’s a child toddling around! I recommend finding a certified trainer who uses positive reinforcement and can show you how to teach your pup these important skills. Please note the emphasis on “positive.” Many owners become

frustrated and want a quick fix, and in their desperation they resort to using aversive tools such as shock collars in order to correct a pup for jumping on their child or trying to steal his snack. This can go very badly as dogs are quick to form mental associations between something uncomfortable or painful (the shock) with something or someone they are interacting with (the child). This is likely to cause the dog to fear the child or become aggressive toward him. Then you will have a much bigger problem. This is why it’s important to teach dogs what you DO want them to do, then reward them for making those good choices. Be sure to check out next month’s article on specific management strategies for dogs and toddlers, including parallel play. Rebecca Mason is a certified dog trainer and owner of Love Them Train Them LLC in Birmingham. She is a former elementary school teacher and is passionate about working with families to channel their dogs’ energy positively. • NEW!
