President’s Message Hi Fellow Gardeners, I hope you are enjoying summertime in Alabama. It is so hot! Every living thing is in need of water. Our June Garden Tour was with Harold and Virna Settle in Cropwell. The roses in their garden are robust; they are blooming with good foliage and very good fragrance. I love Hot Princess and Louise Estes for their profusion of blooms. It is such a joy to be in a beautiful garden and one that I know is a labor of love. We thank you for your wonderful hospitality, delicious meal, and of course Puccini.

I thank everyone who serves the BRS. This Thursday I deadheaded and lightly pruned in the Dunn Rose Garden at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens from 7:30 to 9:30 in the morning. There I met Virgil, one of the gardeners. He told me the Gardens had lost three gardeners as of this week. In order to be helpful, therefore, our next meeting will be Monday, July 25th to deadhead the Dunn Rose Garden from 6:30-7:00PM. Then we'll move indoors at 7:00 for an Ice Cream Social and dessert. Please bring your gloves, pruners, hat and a bag or bucket for what you cut away. Also, bring your favorite dessert or ice cream to share and enjoy. We will have a great time together and be of service to the Gardens. Hope to see you there, Sharon Bamberg, President

Consulting Rosarian Report

I know it is July but I am still basking in the glow of our wonderful Rose Show. We had lots of new faces exhibiting their beautiful roses. Our show was a wonderful success with lots of fun and fellowship. July is a hard month for our roses. If we are not careful we can lose some of those precious bushes. Living in an apartment, my rose garden contains only twenty-six bushes. I have ten roses in ground and sixteen roses in containers. The most important thing we can do for roses in July is water. A rain gauge is a must in a rose garden. With the heat we are having and no rain, the blooms come out but they get crispy just like fried chicken. Cut the blooms early in the morning before they have a chance to fry. Keep the roses deadheaded. You will want to plan on pruning your roses in August if you are going to exhibit in th th th the Deep South District Rose Show in Atlanta in October on the 7 , 8 and 9 . Fertilize your roses but make sure they are well watered before or after using your fertilizer of choice. I use Miracle Gro for roses since I have a small garden. Spraying is very important during the summer. Make sure the roses are very well watered before spraying. Spray early in the morning before it heats up to keep from burning the foliage. Spider mites, white fly and thrips love my roses. I have only had ONE Japanese beetle so far. He was on my beautiful Pope John Paul II. Pick the beetles off by hand and put in a container of rubbing alcohol. Do not use traps!! I use Bayer for Roses to control insects and fungus. Remember to keep those rose beds clean of weeds, dead leaves and spent bloom petals. Don’t forget to visit our Dunn Rose Garden at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Volunteer to help in that garden. If you don’t know how to prune just ask for instruction, a Rose Society member will be glad to show you how to prune rose bushes properly. Just remember the six P’s of success:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Purchase good roses (use the ARS Handbook for Selecting Roses) Proper soil preparation Proper nutrition (Fertilizer) Precipitation (Mother Nature or Garden Hose) Pest management Pruning and clean up

Have a wonderful summer in your garden. George Ann Hamilton, Consulting Rosarian
