President’s Message It's summertime and oh, how can you be hot and dry and humid all at the same time? In the afternoon the thunder rumbles, the lightning flashes and there is no rain. So it's off to the hose and rain barrels I go.
Don’t miss This Month’s Garden Tour – Directions Below
We give hearty thanks to our two May garden hosts. Chris and Tina VanCleave began the afternoon tour with their lovely roses and landscaping of bright annuals,- petunias and dahlias. Next, down the road, we joined Glenn and Dean Hodge.
They have lived in this house about two years so their garden is young. They have great roses, a charming running water feature and in the back is a terrific vegetable garden. Thank you both for your hospitality and delightful refreshments. Our Nominating Committee of Paul Saeger, Glenn Hodge, and Elizabeth Coleman will present our list of new officers to be voted on at the June meeting. Hope to see you there! Sharon Bamberg, President

Consulting Rosarian Report
This is the beginning of the hot weather season, which is very stressful to roses. The roses will need plenty of water to assure their survival as healthy roses during the hot weather. It is good to have two to three inches of mulch around the roses to conserve moisture and help cool the root area around the roses. You should continue to spray your normal spray program for fungicide and insects about every two weeks. This is the time of year for Japanese Beatles and spider mites to invade your roses. Japanese Beatles are easy to kill with sevin dust and you can also get soapy water in a bucket and hand pick the beetles and put them in the water. Milky Spore is also effective but takes 2 to 3 years to work. The spore grows in the ground and is toxic to the grubs. It is not recommended to buy beetle traps since they seem to attract more beetles than they kill. Floramite and Tetrasan are two of the chemicals I have used for mites and have had mixed results. The simplest recommended method is to use a water wand and spray the bottom of the leaves. Roses should be well fed during the summer. After pruning I like to use 340-0 and feed 10-10-10 or 15-5-10 about once a month through September. It is also good to add some organic fertilizers periodically during the summer. Some of these would be Alfalfa Tea, Mills Magic, Blood Mill, Mushroom Compost, and others. For the fertilizers to be available to the roses it is important to maintain an optimal pH between 6-6.5. If anyone has any questions please call me at 205-902-5025. Glenn Hodge CR
