President’s Message I send out great congratulations for such a wonderful rose show. The roses and the photographs were first class; the competition was fierce. At least three times the judges had tie breakers as they selected the winners. Exhibitors came from Arkansas, Huntsville, Daphne, and Pensacola, as well as from the Birmingham area.
64th Annual Birmingham Rose Show A Smashing Success
A great thank you for everyone who could participate. I really can't thank you enough. Many of us were learning new jobs, many were going from one job to the next, and many worked the entire day from 6 AM to 5 PM. A special thank you to Hyacinth Prince, who in her job as Awards Coordinator, plans all year to collect the 70 awards needed for the show.
Please remember in your prayers: Lavonne Glover whose husband James passed away in April, Hyacinth Prince whose mother passed away just before the show, and Gloria Purnell and Clayton Richard who are recovering from surgery. Congratulations to our winners! Thank you all who grew your roses, photographed them, and exhibited them. The Birmingham Rose Society had a world class rose show because of the dedication of its members. I'm proud of you and I'm glad to be a member. Sharon Bamberg, President
Consulting Rosarian Report
We all hate to spray every 10 days to 2 weeks but it has to be done to keep blackspot and thrips at bay. I have been using a PECO Sprayer for fifteen years and it does the job well. The Model number is 12007 and it sells for $389.00 plus freight. It comes with an 8 foot hose but I use a 20 foot hose to keep from having to move the sprayer as often. It comes with 14 inch wheels to better move it around and it has a rechargeable battery - one charge will last for Six hours. I have had to replace the battery twice in 15 years. I have had to replace the on-off switch twice in 15 years. I like the Brass adjustable spray nozzle which can adjust from a fine spray to a stream up to 40 feet which comes in handy for spraying around wood burn piles to keep the fire from getting into the woods. The sprayer holds five gallons of mixture. The sprayer is easy to put together with only four bolts to attach the handle to the sprayer. The brass sprayer has a curved end which makes it easy to spray the underside of leaves at the bottom of the rose bush. Be sure to clean after each spray to clear the hose and spray nozzle. I use a combination of Diathane and Banner Max and alternate with Compass. I use Indicate 5 as a spreader and Conserve SE to control Thrips. With the adjustable nozzle set to a fine mist when spraying under the leaves, enough will cover the tops to control Thrips. Be sure to water your rose bushes before you spray as not to shock the rose bush by spraying the chemicals on the bush. To learn more or to order, call 800-438-5823. Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Birmingham Rose Society April 25, 2016 6:30 P.M. Chris Van Cleave called the meeting to order. We had thirty members in attendance and two visitors were present. The hostesses for the evening were thanked for providing the meeting with great refreshments. Sharon Bamberg, President was absent due to having her brother in surgery this evening. Gloria Purnell is doing just great recovering from her fall last month. We need to keep Jackie Tevendale in our thoughts for her to get better. The Rose Show report follows: Clayton Richard will teach a seminar at 3:00P.M. Our judges for the show will come from th Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas. We will meet on Friday May 6 at 1:30pm to get our truck loaded and set up for the show. Everyone who can help is asked to be at the Botanical Gardens at 4:00 PM and stay until the exhibition hall is set up for Saturday morning at 6:30am. Trey Hoffman gave a Plant Sale Report. The plant sale was a great success. They sold 75% on Friday and sold out of the roses on Sunday. We made $2,700 for the gardens. Chris Van Cleave introduced our speaker for the evening Mr. Clayton Beatty with Mills Magic. He told the story of Theodore Mills and how it all started. Mr. Mills is now 93. The Mills mix was misunderstood by many. It was never intended to be solely used as a fertilizer. It is a supplement! His program was very informative. Harold Settle was next on the program. He brought many of his own roses from his garden. He explained the how, why and when we groom our roses for the exhibition table. He demonstrated how to groom the rose to exhibit it at its best. He also showed us what the judges look for when choosing good specimens. Also, he instructed us on what will get our rose th disqualified. He gave us a lot of good information to put our best roses forward on Saturday May 7 . Our next meeting will be held in a member’s garden in May and will be announced. Wanda Williams won the Portland Rose door prize. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 P.M. Respectfully submitted, George Ann Hamilton, Recording Secretary
