VISUAL ARTS
SEPTEMBER – MID OCTOBER
JULY – AUGUST
SHANNON BERGIN Birr artist, Shannon Bergin is an illustrator and animator, recently graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design. Her work is created using both traditional and digital techniques to create images that examine the role of fiction and its ability to shape our perception of reality. This body of work consists of a series of watercolour and ink illustrations from her first picture book How to Grow a Girl. Through tropes and symbolism, the work aims to identify the aspects of the emotional journey of childhood we share and how this defines our experiences throughout life. The exhibition will officially open on Friday 26 July, 7pm and run until end of August.
DOURAS ART GROUP Jane Hansell, Margaret Hickey, Wiltrud Dull Three unlikely individuals from very different backgrounds came together and formed the Douras Art Group, named after the townland where they met, in East Galway on the border with county Clare. Jane Hansell is from an art background and was a teacher/lecturer in the UK for many years. Margaret Hickey who has strong Irish roots, also from the UK is a poet and published author from a classical, literary background. Wiltrud Dull, a German national is from a medical background being both a qualified midwife and aromatherapist. This is their first group show. The exhibition will run from September until mid October.
MID-OCTOBER – NOVEMBER
CAROLINE QUINLAN All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. My exhibition is concerned with how we change over time and how we deal with these changes. As children, we are more honest and innocent, and do we learn to act a certain way as we get older, to protect ourselves or to be seen in a different light. When do we stop acting? How much of the person we show to the world is the real us. My pieces depicted several scenes from different stages of life shown as a scene from a play. I use high fired porcelain and mixed media in my work. The exhibition will open on Thursday 17 October and run until the end of November.

Magic Eyes IN MY
Thomas Hardy ’s Poems of Love & Loss
Performed by Michael James Ford, Clodagh Mooney Duggan, Elliot Moriarty and the Delmaine String Quartet SATURDAY 14 SEPTEMBER This exciting collaboration with the Delmaine String Quartet explores one of the great romances in literary history – Thomas Hardy’s courtship of Emma Gifford and their subsequent long and difficult marriage. When Emma died in 1912, after many years of estrangement, Hardy was inspired to write some of the greatest love poetry in the English language and to revisit the landscape of his first great passion. Magic in My Eyes charts the course of a turbulent passion through Hardy’s verse and journals along with Emma’s letters and recollections and promises an evening of sublime music and unforgettable words. The Delmaine Quartet have selected music that reflects this complex emotional landscape, drawn primarily from the lyrical chamber works of Frank Bridge (1879–1941) – the brilliant, yet relatively unknown, English composer. The world of rural Wessex is also represented through folk music and song. Michael James Ford and the Delmaine String Quartet have previously collaborated on two highly successful projects – Love and War and The Waterloo Concert, which have toured nationally and overseas. 8pm • €15/€12

Dancing at the
CROSSROADS A fusion of baroque & traditional music & dance THE GREGORY WALKERS & KELSEY SCHUHLE DANCER FRIDAY 4 OCTOBER Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries Ireland adopted some of the aspects of a cultural crossroads as foreign soldiers passed through Ireland, Irish soldiers returned from abroad, continental musicians were attracted to Dublin’s growing metropolis and Irish music was published and adapted for baroque tastes. In this concert the Gregory Walkers join forces with Irish dancer, Kelsey Schuhle, for a meeting of baroque and traditional music and dance from Ireland, England, France and Spain: Hornpipes, Chaconnes, Folías and more. A ‘Gregory’ was the name of a wig worn in the 16th century, said to have been invented by a barber named Gregory. A lute, viol, or fiddle was part of the furniture of a barber’s shop in the era and his customers, while waiting for a haircut or a minor operation, would amuse themselves on the instruments provided. The Gregory Walkers comprises some of Ireland’s most respected musicians. They are experienced in delivering performances suitable for the whole family and have done so for Ardee Baroque Festival, Kilkenny Arts Festival, Music Generation, The ARK Children’s Cultural Centre, National Museum of Ireland and others. 8pm • €16/€14
