CÚIG FIVE ARTISTS – ONE EXHIBITION

MID-OCT – NOV

SEPT – MID-OCT

SANDRA COLE O’BRIEN CHILDHOOD MEMORY

JUL – AUG

VISUAL ARTS Sandra studied ceramics at Limerick School of Art as a mature student and graduated in 2013. Since then she has been developing her glazes and technique at her studio near Terryglass, Co. Tipperary. In this body of work “Childhood Memory” Sandra has taken the opportunity to combine her love of nature and her love of clay. “For me this exhibition captures a memory of summers when days were long, when there was time to enjoy wild summer meadows, country lanes, daisy chains, innocence and laughter”. The exhibition will run until 15 July.

Cúig presents an exciting group of five diversely skilled contemporary artists that have come together to create a compelling collection of work that celebrates the harmonious existence of all things in nature. This visually stunning exhibition features a variety of nature inspired artworks from the outstanding talent of Vincent Devine, Emma Barone, Martina McAteer, Tara Barone and Maura Fahy, urging us to connect to the beauty, power and balance within the natural world. The exploration of nature in art can take endless forms because nature provides us with such a vast wealth of inspiring phenomena. These artists have instilled this in their work in a natural and uncomplicated way using their own unique style and exceptional expertise. The exhibition officially opens on Thursday 21 July at 6.30pm and runs until the end of August.

DAMASE MORIN DREAM STATE Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions and sensations that occur usually involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. The content and purpose of dreams are not definitively understood, though they have been a topic of scientific speculation, as well as a subject of philosophical and religious interest, throughout recorded history. In modern times, dreams have been seen as a connection to the unconscious mind. They range from normal and ordinary to overly surreal and bizarre. Dreams can have varying natures, such as being frightening, exciting, magical, melancholic, adventurous, or sexual. Opinions about the meaning of dreams have varied and shifted through time and culture. Most people today appear to endorse the Freudian theory of dreams – that dreams reveal insight into hidden desires and emotions.

CASSANDRA DORER Cassandra lives in west Clare and in 2008 completed a Masters Degree in Fine Art. The landscape of the Burren and the coast is the inspiration for her practice – her work is an emotional response to it. “Initially I either make sketches in the landscape or I take photographs but a lot of time is spent walking through the landscape or on the beach absorbing the feeling of the place. I then work in my studio, painting intuitively recalling the memories and feelings thus creating an emotional response to the landscape”. Cassandra works with oil on canvas.

MUNDY SATURDAY 30 JULY

Needing absolutely no introduction in Birr town, singer/songwriter Mundy is one of a number of artists to successfully make the transition from street busking in Dublin to international stardom during the ‘90s. Mundy’s mainly acoustic, folk-based pop/rock has been compared to Damien Rice and Josh Ritter; however, his style is more upbeat and celebratory than either, and his jangle pop influence and tendency to experiment with unconventional sonic textures and beats further distinguishes him. Enjoy some of your favourites… July, Gin & Tonic Sky and some of his new work from recent album, Mundy. Mundy will be supported by Nichole McGuire. 8pm • €21

CHAROLAIS MONDAY 1 – TUESDAY 2 AUGUST ‘Charolais‘ takes the age old story of female jealousy and gives it a new twist: the other woman is a cow, a literal one, a purebred Charolais heifer. Noni Stapleton plays Siobhan, whose farmer boyfriend devotes considerable attention to his prize heifer at the expense of his very pregnant and disgruntled girlfriend. Siobhan has developed a homicidal jealousy for this Charolais and is feeling equally murderous towards her snobbish soon-to-be mother-in-law. A dark comedy of love and longing: rarely in theatre are the challenges of farming life and the joy of sex expressed so frankly or with such charm! 1.05am • €15 (incl. light lunch)

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! TUESDAY 2 – WEDNESDAY 3 AUGUST April 2016 saw Birr Stage Guild playing their part in the 1916 commemoration programme with a theatrical presentation called Sowing the Wind. The production gives a flavour of life in Birr and in the country generally in the early years of the 20th century and culminates in the actual events of the Rising. The story, told in poetry, song, dramatic dialogue and contemporary photographs and newsreel, follows the historical narrative of the time, dealing with the Gaelic cultural revival, the impact of WW1, the Irish Volunteers and Easter Week and its aftermath. Although Birr did not feature in any of the actual events of Easter Week the show will deal with the social life of the town as reflected in the activities in the Oxmantown Hall as well as the connection to the war as the Leinster Regiment’s base in the Midlands. Scripted and Devised by: Michael Donegan; Music Director: Enda O’Connor. Incidentally the title of the piece comes from a very prescient editorial which featured in the Midland Tribune in the week following the Rising when the writer remarked, in relation to the subsequent executions and their possible ramifications for the British administration, ‘…Those that sow the wind must reap the Whirlwind…’ 8pm • €15/13 Group Rates Available

Short Films ANAM BEO

WEDNESDAY 3 AUGUST

Screening of I’m Not Nursing Home Material and In Your Face and other shorts by Anam Beo, Offaly’s Arts, Health and Wellbeing programme. In 2015 Anam Beo facilitators Rowena Keaveny and Julie Spollen embarked on individual art projects with John Beesley and David Boland that turned into a deep exploration of what it means to be creative, to reflect on the impact of time and document memories. Recording their experiences and pursuits in the arts with a keen interest in how a person is marked and moulded by their health and wellbeing. They focussed on the image making process itself in short animations and voice recordings. The poignant part being the realisation that if these memories and thoughts are not recorded, they could be lost. It is important to provide the opportunity for some participant groups with a new and fresh approach to creativity while others like to stick to what they know best. The facilitator has to be able to balance these creative needs sensitively whilst introducing new short term challenges and projects from time to time. Many thanks to National Lottery Grant Scheme and Department of Health for supporting this project alongside Offaly County Council Arts Office and The Dublin Mid-Leinster HSE. 2.30pm • No Charge • All Welcome

EXPLORING

THE UNIVERSE FROM BIRR with Professor Peter Gallagher

THURSDAY 4 AUGUST Birr has a long and distinguished tradition in astronomy dating back to the mid 1800s. Over a century and a half later, a group of Irish astronomers are now building a new radio telescope in Birr that will reignite astronomy here and put Ireland back on the cutting edge of research in astrophysics. Professor Peter Gallagher is a solar astrophysicist at Trinity College Dublin and is leading the construction of the LOFAR radio telescope in Birr. This will connect Birr to the largest telescope in the world and allow scientists to explore the early universe, find planets and study explosions on the sun with amazing detail. Professor Gallagher was a senior scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre. This is a talk for all the family and not to be missed by those wanting to know what’s going on in the sky above our heads!! 2–3pm • €5 (group of four €15) (Includes tea/coffee, drink and cookies!)

SATURDAY 3 SEPTEMBER Frankie Gavin and De Dannan bring something different and unique to their audiences. The band’s repertoire includes their trademark sets of lively, sometimes furious jigs and reels – but their choice of material, arrangements and playing style combine to set traditional Irish music in a wider musical and cultural context. This 21st century line-up infuses the band’s inherited music with a bewildering range of influences – from gypsy jazz to contemporary pop music, and from mainstream European classical music to sentimental Irish-American ballads. The band’s latest recordings, the CD Jigs and Jazz II and their recent single which pairs Handel’s The Queen Of Sheba with Paul McCartney’s Calico Skies, illustrate perfectly the fusion of sounds and influences that now characterise their music. 8pm • €20

CONVERSATION BEFORE A HANGING A REHEARSED READING OF A PLAY

by Mary Kenny

SUNDAY 18 SEPTEMBER Produced by Bryn Coldrick and directed by Richard Ball William Joyce was the last man to be hanged for treason by the British Crown. Known as “Lord Haw-Haw” during his infamous wartime broadcasts from Nazi Germany, Joyce grew up in Galway, the son of a Mayo father and a Lancashire mother with Ulster roots. As he awaits his execution in Wandsworth Prison, his memories return to his childhood home and his last thoughts are of looking towards the Atlantic from Salthill. His younger brother Quentin tried desperately to halt the execution, since Joyce was never a British subject. But all appeals failed and William Joyce was duly hanged in January 1946. His remains now lie at Bohermore Cemetery, Galway. Joyce’s political opinions were odious: but the historic jury is still out on the legality of his execution. The reading will be followed by a Q&A session with Mary Kenny. 7pm • €5 Film@BirrTheatre

Set during the autumn years of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Hail, Caesar!, the latest comedy from renowned directors Joel and Ethan Coen, follows a single day in the life of studio ‘fixer’ Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), as he attempts to track down his lead actor Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) who suddenly disappears during the production of their studio’s biggest release of the year, a Roman epic entitled ‘Hail, Caesar!’. It turns out that Baird is being held for ransom by a mysterious group, referring to themselves only as ‘The Future’, and are demanding $100,000 to ensure his safe return. Not one to lie down without a fight, Mannix enlists the help of Burt (Channing Tatum), Laurence (Ralph Fiennes) and Tobey (Alden Ehrenreich) to find their studio’s biggest (and most hapless) star and get their film’s production back on track.

Mean Time

THURSDAY 22 SEPTEMBER

Music Network is delighted to present a wonderful new collaboration involving some of the finest Irish and Scottish traditional musicians. The extraordinary dancer, Colin Dunne, will be joined by Tola Custy, Maeve Gilchrist and David Power for a performance of an exciting newly commissioned work. Revisiting Dublin Mean Time (1880–1916), a time that reflected the rising of the sun at the Dunsink Observatory in Ireland, 25 minutes and 21 seconds later than its rising at Greenwich, will offer a musical exploration of the deviating light patterns that introduce the dawn. As a ray of white sunlight diffuses to create the illusion of spectacular coloured patterns in the eye of the beholder, this musical interpretation will engage the listener through a sparkling kaleidoscope of melody and rhythm. Weaving simple and complex textures, the quartet will conjure up a beautiful soundscape, combining the play of dance with an adventurous musical spirit. A return to the natural sounds and rhythms that announce Ireland’s day. 8.25pm* • €17/15 *For tonight only the performance will start at 8.25pm – in line with Dublin Mean Time!

László Nemes’ stunning debut feature takes its title from central character Saul, a Hungarian-Jewish prisoner at the AuschwitzBirkenau concentration camp who, in his job as a Sonderkommando, is forced to assist in the grisly day-to-day management of mass exterminations. When Saul witnesses a young boy briefly surviving the gas chamber, he becomes determined to give the child a proper Jewish burial. First-time actor Géza Röhrig provides the focal point for the film as Saul – the camera rarely strays from his character while he negotiates the intricate workings of the camp in an attempt to carry out this dangerous quest. “By any standards, this would be an outstanding film, but for a debut it is remarkable.” – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

LUKA BLOOM FRIDAY 30 SEPTEMBER

Luka Bloom is regarded as one of Ireland’s best-respected contemporary folk artists. Having produced 20 albums since the 1970s he continues to push the boundaries of what his music can do – making provocative, poetic music that delves deep into the intricacies of the human soul and pulls out the nuggets and puts them in a song. Kevin Barry Moore, as he was named in the beginning, came from Co. Kildare, Ireland. Brought up in a musical family his journey began through traditional music and the all-important Song. It was soon clear that he was developing his own sound, one that centres around place and standing up for the rights of the land, yet is grounded in the poetry of the old traditional Irish Folk songs. Luka Bloom has the power to bring audiences to a hush as his poetic lyrics bounce over melodies in a beautiful, captivating way. The same artist can rouse the spirit of the audience to the ceiling when he changes the tempo. 8pm • €22.50

On a gorgeous Italian island legendary rock star Marianne (Tilda Swinton) is enjoying an extended holiday with her boyfriend Paul (A Little Chaos’ Matthias Schoenaerts). She is recovering from an operation on her vocal chords, so when her brash ex-producer Harry (Ralph Fiennes) and his newly-discovered vixenish daughter Penelope (Dakota Johnson) arrive unexpectedly, the interruption is initially a welcome and fun distraction. In this loose remake of the 1969 drama La Piscine, director Luca Guadagnino and his outstanding international cast elegantly explore themes of desire and pleasure to deliver a sensuous tale of frolics, drama and intrigue. “Guadagnino’s film is gorgeously presented” – Donald Clarke, The Irish Times

Joachim Trier’s English language debut; about a suburban New York family still struggling with the aftermath of a parent’s death, deftly navigates lives in stasis. Eldest son Jonah (Jesse Eisenberg), a sociology professor adrift from his wife and new born baby; a father Gene (Gabriel Byrne), ineffectual and overcome by an upcoming retrospective show dedicated to his late wife, Isabelle (Isabelle Huppert), an acclaimed war photographer; and youngest son Conrad (Devin Druid), 15, socially isolated and unaware of the circumstances of his mothers death. Trier employs multiple third person narrators and playful shifts in time creating a film novelistic in subject and structure, but deeply cinematic in how it expresses lives overshadowed by a loved-ones death.
