VISUAL ARTS ALL ROADS LEAD TO BIRR
MARCH – APRIL
FRANK McGRATH B.A. Cork native, and graduate of Crawford College of Art & Design, Frank McGrath is known in Offaly since his days as artist in residence at Belmont Mills. His work has been described as painting with the camera using a mix of traditional and contemporary methods of the photographic printing process. He uses pinhole cameras, digital cameras, scanners as well as smart-phone screens, film, print collage, and photogrammes. The resulting images, taken from present day subjects, evoke a sense of nostalgia about a past that never was.

ELEMENTS
JUNE – JULY
TINA CLAFFEY Following her successful exhibitions, Seoda – Treasure Under Foot, and SeodaTreasure of the Wetlands, Tina Claffey’s fascination with our native bogs and wetlands continues. In her new exhibition Elements she delves deeper into this natural wilderness, encouraging the viewer to slow down, as they immerse into an underworld of fantasy and mindfulness. Using traditional photographic techniques, she conveys the mood of the twilight hours, the effect of the natural elements of rain, wind, overcast skies and brilliant sunshine, while also venturing beneath the water of the mysterious bog pools to reveal the treasures and inhabitants we cannot see. The exhibition will officially open on Friday 9 June and run until the end of July.

À peine j’ouvre les yeux gives us a look at Tunisian youth on the eve of the Jasmine Revolution. Farah (Baya Medhaffer) is a young woman at a crossroads. Her medical-school application has just been accepted, and nothing could please her mother, Hayet (Ghalia Benali), more – but Farah’s passion is for music, and her underground band is just beginning to get noticed. Their music blends rock with daring lyrics that have the raw poetry of spoken word. Soon enough, the police are alerted to the band’s subversive performances and begin to harass them, and when Farah is detained and interrogated, she realizes that one of her friends is a snitch. À peine j’ouvre les yeux is a remarkably accomplished first film, directed by Leyla Bouzid with unflagging honesty and an impeccable eye for detail. Presented with the support of the French Embassy and the Institut Français.

Jake (Theo Taplitz) is a quiet, sensitive junior high school student who dreams of being an artist. His family moves from Manhattan to Brooklyn after his parents (Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Ehle) inherit his recently deceased grandfather’s multi-story building. Jake strikes up a friendship with Tony (Michael Barbieri), whose mother, Leonor (Paulina Garcia), runs a small dressmaking shop from the building’s first floor storefront. The two 13-year-olds quickly bond over their shared love of art and computer games. When a rent dispute develops between Jake and Tony’s parents, their friendship is tested severely. Ira Sachs’ intimate character study of Jake and Tony’s budding friendship is a deft examination of gentrification and the life-changing impact it has on family and friendships.

A big-hearted picture full of small, understated moments of magic, the New Zealand-based comedy-drama Hunt for the Wilderpeople is an off-kilter charmer. Directed by Taika Waititi (co-director of the uproarious vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows), this downplays the broad laughs of its predecessor, instead focusing on the emotional thrust of a mismatched buddy movie. Not that any of the central characters would admit to anything as fluffy as an emotional journey. Ricky (Julian Dennison) is a troubled orphan, raised on hiphop and rejection. Placed with the latest in a series of foster families, this time on a farm far away from the city where he styles himself a gangster, Ricky is reluctant. But his foster aunt Bella (Rima Te Wiata) breaks down his defences with down-to-earth love and affectionate mockery. However, when a tragedy threatens to steal back the life that Ricky has come to love, the boy finds himself on the run in the bush with Bella’s grizzled husband Hec (Sam Neill) and a dog called Tupac. Winner, Audience Award Edinburgh International Film Festival 2016 Winner, Best International Feature Galway Film Fleadh 2016
