In a remote Turkish coastal village on the Black Sea, five young sisters live under the guardianship of their grandmother and uncle after the deaths of their parents. When a neighbour witnesses the girls innocently playing on the beach, she reports this “scandalous” behaviour to their guardians, who institute a tyrannical regime of both physical and emotional imprisonment. All “instruments of corruption” and pop-culture artifacts are removed from the house, girly outfits are replaced with formless brown dresses, and, following a brief escape to an all-female soccer match, bars are installed on the windows and gates erected at the home’s entrance. As the eldest sisters are subjected to virginity tests and married off one by one, the younger sisters look on in fear and resolve not to succumb to the same fate. The feature debut of Turkish filmmaker Deniz Gamze Ergüven is a sensitive and powerful portrait of sisterhood and burgeoning sexuality – Belfast Film Festival 2016

Sentaro (Masatoshi Nagase) runs a struggling food kiosk where he sells dorayaki pancakes to a small number of customers. After he advertises for an assistant, he is surprised when sixtysix year old Tokue applies for the position. While Sentaro initially refuses, her persistence pays off when she brings him a sample of her own homemade delicious sweet bean paste (an), the filling used in the pancakes, to taste. As Tokue shares the secrets of her cooking as well as the importance of nature in life, she brings new hope to the kiosk and its chef. But Tokue harbours a secret of her own. This latest film from Japanese director Naomi Kawase (Still the Water) is gentle, quietly moving and life-affirming.

NEW FOREST FRIDAY 11 NOVEMBER We could say something like ‘welcome back’, but CATHY DAVEY has never been away. Yes, her fourth studio album, New Forest, arrives six years after her Choice Music Prize-nominated The Nameless was released, but Cathy has had other important things on her to-do list – namely setting up and establishing the animal charity organisation, My Lovely Horse Rescue, which re-homes and rehabilitates neglected, abused and abandoned horses, ponies, donkeys and other members of the equine family. New Forest was produced by Cathy and is preceded by the first single The Pattern. The album was written and recorded in the forest, two forests in fact. The first was in one of Ireland’s sole surviving indigenous forests, Woodford, in Galway and the second on the skirts of Connemara. Continuing the ‘Forest’ theme Cathy launched a new Electric Picnic stage by debuting her album on the Hazel Wood Stage this year. Cathy is on a national wide tour and we’re delighted to have her back in Birr! 8pm • €21

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, French director Jacque Audiard’s latest film tells the story of Dheepan (Jesuthasan Antonythasan), a former Tamil Tiger fighter in Sri Lanka. As the civil war ends he decides to flee to France with two strangers, a woman and child who pose as his family in the hope of making it easier to claim asylum. Finding a caretaker job on a troubled housing complex in the Paris suburbs, and with almost no knowledge of French, Dheepan works hard to build a new life for his fake family. But he soon realises that the past is difficult to escape from. Once again Audiard delivers a powerfully compassionate yet morally complex tale.

Thierry (Vincent Lindon), a principled middle-aged man, has been unemployed for over a year. He doesn’t want to rely on state handouts like many of his former co-workers, instead preferring to continue looking for work, so that he can provide for his family honestly. After a lengthy and often humiliating search, he finally gets a security job at a local supermarket. But Thierry finds himself constantly struggling to negotiate between his conscience and the demands of his new position. Similar in tone to recent Dardenne brothers’ films, Stéphane Brizé’s low-key but powerful social drama hinges on Lindon’s quiet yet emotionally gripping performance; the rest of the cast are nonprofessionals which adds a further layer of naturalism and poignancy.

Giulio Ricciarelli’s compelling feature debut, and Germany’s official 2016 Oscar® entry, shines light on an often-overlooked period when the country was in denial about its war crimes. Labyrinth of Lies approaches the subject using the fictional young prosecutor Johan Radmann (an amalgamation here of several real-life lawyers). Radmann is idealistic and ambitious, eager to prove that he can take on more than traffic violation cases. After receiving a tip-off, the tenacious young man slowly unearths key documents that provide evidence of the war crimes that occurred at Auschwitz. But as his efforts to bring those responsible to justice encounter resistance, he gradually realises that most of his fellow countrymen are either unaware of or unwilling to acknowledge the atrocities committed.

The debut feature from Irish writer/director Simon Fitzmaurice is a spirited coming-of-age story that traces the journey of a strong-willed young woman as she weathers loss, upheaval, and rebirth. “If you hide from death, you hide from life.” Teenage Emily (Evanna Lynch) inherits this mantra from her father Robert (Michael Smiley), an author and philosopher, but following the tragic death of Emily’s mother, Robert starts to change, and his visionary eccentricities now appear to be symptoms of mental illness. Robert is soon institutionalized, and Emily is sent away to live with foster parents. When Emily suddenly decides to travel north to bust her father out of his psychiatric hospital, the hopelessly smitten Arden joins her on a road trip that will give both their first taste of what it truly means to be alive. Brimming with images of freedom, from the wide open road to the vast expanse of the sea, and buoyed by an arrestingly confident performance from Lynch, My Name is Emily will resonate with the young and young-at-heart alike. This is a stylish and assured film about self-discovery as an ongoing adventure.

Victoria, a young Spanish woman, dances through the Berlin scene with abandon. She meets four mates outside a club who introduce themselves as Sonne, Boxer, Blinker and Fuß. They quickly get chatting. Sonne and Victoria take a fancy to each other and slip away from the group at the first opportunity. But their tender flirting is rudely interrupted by the others because, for these pals, the night is far from over. To settle an old debt they have to pull off a dodgy deal. And because one of them is too drunk, they decide that Victoria, of all people, should take over the role of driver. What began as a game suddenly becomes deadly serious. Working from his own script, actor and director Sebastian Schipper tells the story of a breathless night on the streets of the metropolis. The camera seamlessly intertwines the passing of time and numerous locations, placing the audience right in the centre of the action. Alongside the audacious gang, we gaze out across the city from tower block roofs, saunter along deserted pavements and hide out in secluded courtyards as apparently random events coalesce into a dramatic tour de force. – BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2015

They have not spoken in over 40 years, a feud that has reduced any necessary communication between them to be carried out via written messages delivered by Kiddi’s dog. However when one of their sheep contracts a contagious disease, the livelihood of the brothers and the entire rural community comes under threat. The much-loved Casablanca has come to epitomise the classic Hollywood studio picture at its best. Ironically, its ‘perfect’ blend of elements-story, casting, music, studio artifice, seems to have resulted from one of those happy accidents that occasionally makes for a great movie. The film’s turbulent production involved constant rewrites and radical changes in casting, with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman replacing Ronald Reagan and Ann Sheridan. Fortunately, director Michael Curtiz was on hand to give fate a helping hand in making the film one of Hollywood’s most memorable romantic melodramas. The familiar narrative focuses on themes of lost love, honour and self-sacrifice in an exotic wartime setting. Bogart is the cynical nightclub owner in Casablanca who has a fateful meeting with the lover he left behind in Paris. She is now married to a French Resistance fighter who is hunted by the Nazis, and Bogart has to decide whether or not to help the couple escape to freedom. Casablanca must have appeared romantic and nostalgic even in 1942 and now seems like a timeless classic about the triumph of civilised values in a cruel world.

Michael Stone (David Thewlis) is a successful motivational speaker with fans across the country, but inside him sits a knot of anxiety that renders much of his daily life meaningless. Everything and everyone just seems the same to him. But then Michael meets Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh) on a speaking-tour stop in Cincinnati. Lisa is an anomaly. Michael and Lisa begin with prickly, cautious conversations and then move towards love. But, unlike in a conventional Hollywood romance, that romantic arc is neither simple nor obvious. The love scene at the heart of Anomalisa should instantly rocket up the list of cinema’s greatest. It’s intimate, awkward, heartbreaking, and deeply erotic despite the fact that the lovers are made of felt. “Returning to the themes of human connection and artistic creation that ran through his feature directorial debut, Synecdoche, New York, as well as his screenplays for Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Kaufman delivers an even more insightful rumination on love here, one that finds its perfect expression in the fragility of the film team’s stopmotion figures. This is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind romance” – CAMERON BAILEY, TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

SUCCESSFUL

T.D.

One of your own – a vote for Tull is a vote for yourself!

SATURDAY 25 FEBRUARY Written by John B. Keane Adapted for stage by Jon Kenny, Mary McEvoy and Michael Scott from Keane’s novellas The Successful T.D. and An Irish Minister of State. POSTPONED FROM LAST SEPTEMBER, WE ARE DELIGHTED TO HOST THIS PRODUCTION FOLLOWING IT’S TWO WEEK RUN AT THE GAIETY. The Successful T.D. follows the hilarious antics of one Tull McAdoo as he seeks reelection to the Dáil in the October Elections. “There are lots of things I know about people – necessary things – in case I ever need them – it’s part and parcel of the dirty game we call politics – don’t ever judge a politician outright – if he does something which seems underhand – he’s only doing his best – to survive!” Written in 1967, in The Successful T.D. John B. Keane displays his edge for humour and satire that are uncomfortably close to the politics of today... 8pm • €22.50

Three sisters – Sachi, Yoshino and Chika – live together in a large house in the city of Kamakura. When their father – absent from the family home for the last 15 years – dies, they travel to the countryside for his funeral, and meet their shy teenage halfsister. Bonding quickly with the orphaned Suzu, they invite her to live with them. Suzu eagerly agrees, and a new life of joyful discovery begins for the four siblings. My Little Sister is a film which explores sorrow and change, through the light of renewal. Exploring the deep bonds of sisterly love, Kore-eda has created a masterful exploration of the transformative power of familial unity.
