VISUAL ARTS AT THE FADE

BRÍGH STRAWBRIDGE-O’HAGAN Brígh Strawbridge-O'Hagan works in a variety of mediums and fields including drawing, oil, ink and watercolour painting and more. Her work is often inspired by culturally inherited narratives including those present in music, history and mythology as well as the landscapes and wildlife of her native Co. Wicklow. Nature and our connection with it is an integral part of her work. Brígh completed an Honours Degree in Fine Art from IADT in 2012 and has been involved in numerous projects, both solo and collaborative since. She was awarded the 2012 Residency at the Belmont Mill Studio in Co. Offaly. For more information or to contact the artist about bespoke commissions or classes please visit: www.brighstrawbridge.com. The exhibition runs until the end of November.

URBAN LANDSCAPE

DECEMBER – JANUARY

COMMON GROUND The 10th annual Common Ground, referring to a group of artists coming together to exhibit, will take the theme Urban Landscape this year and we are currently calling for local artists to submit work. The exhibition will be curated by a guest selector and it is intended the resulting exhibition will showcase the exceptional talent and diversity of visual artists in the Midlands today. Urban Landscapes are defined as the combination of environmental and human phenomena that coexist together in a particular place on Earth's surface. Urban areas are some of the most striking examples of humanenvironment landscapes. They involve the highest levels of human activity and are often heavily shaped by environmental factors. In the visual arts an urban landscape is an artistic representation, such as a painting, drawing, print, photograph, etc of the physical aspects of a city or urban area. Full details regarding submitting on www.birrtheatre.com. The exhibition runs until the end of January.

FEBRUARY – MARCH

ISABELLE GABORIT Isabelle is a contemporary artist, though her preferred medium of encaustic is ancient. In her studio located on the scenic shores of Lough Derg, County Clare, she has rekindled the ancient painting process of encaustics, an immediate and tactile painting method using molten pigmented beeswax. Her creative process involves the application of semi-transparent layers of wax, paint, and pigment, striving to create depth and translucency without compromising the spirit of the medium or subject matter. In this recent body of work, Isabelle has been compelled to explore the primal theme of light embedded in her connection to the ever changing Irish landscape. The works act as a reflective rendition of the remarkable light value of this land, composed entirely of the environment’s three most prominent physical characteristics, the Land, the Sea and the Sky. The exhibition runs until the middle of March.

It’s now twenty years since the distinctive sound of Tranquility, featuring Phil’s piano and orchestra, first seduced the whole of Ireland with its easy melodic charm, before going on to make believers around the world. With record sales now counted in millions, as well as a Grammy nomination, several appearances in the White House and sold out international tours, it’s been quite a ride. Not that Phil Coulter had been a stranger to success in the music biz prior to that! In the twenty years before Tranquility he had achieved world-wide recognition as a hit songwriter, notching up chart entries with a diverse list of acts from Elvis Presley to Waylon Jennings, from Bobby Vinton to The Bay City Rollers. His production credits include Van Morrison, Sinéad O’Connor, Elvis Costello and Richard Harris while in Ireland his successes have ranged from the Dubliners to Planxty, from Paddy Reilly to the Furey Brothers. He has performed with everyone from James Galway and the London Symphony Orchestra to Nanci Griffith and The Blue Moon Orchestra, not to mention Henry Mancini, Elmer Bernstein and Quincy Jones! He has contributed at least four titles to the list of Great Irish Songs – the anthems The Town I Loved So Well and Ireland’s Call and the haunting Scorn Not His Simplicity and Steal Away. 8pm • €26

SCRIBE (La mécanique de l’ombre) TUESDAY 21 NOVEMBER Starring: François Cluzet, Denis Podalydès, Sami Bouajila

FRIDAY 17 NOVEMBER During the American-Mexican War (1846–48) some 3,000 immigrant soldiers deserted the US Army with more than 500 of these – mainly Irish – joining the Mexican side where, led by John Riley from Galway, they fought as The San Patricio Battalion. Mexicans still hold the brave Irish soldiers in high esteem. Performed by Tallaght actor/playwright Stephen Jones (Red Rock, Love/Hate), the play tells the story from the point of view of Thomas O’Byrne, who finds himself caught up in the war while trying to escape arrest! The play’s title is taken from a quote attributed to the Mexican leader, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. “With a hundred more like these men of Riley’s, I could have won this war!” **** “Gripping… Excellent Performance… A hugely enjoyable one man play.” – The Irish Mail on Sunday “This moving testament to these forgotten heroes” – The Sunday Times “Jones in this performance is a force of nature” – The Red Curtain Review 8pm • €16/€14

Duval (François Cluzet – The Intouchables, Little White Lies) is a recovering alcoholic struggling to find a job. One day, the mysterious Clement (Denis Podalydès) offers him a high-paying job transcribing tape recordings. After taking up the unusual offer, Duval quickly finds himself in morally and legally dubious territory. He reluctantly becomes embroiled in a shadowy world of paranoia, political scandal and ultimately violence... Embracing the spirit of 1970s conspiracy thrillers like The Conversation, Scribe is a taut, moody thriller that feels endearingly old school. From the mysterious setup to the life-or-death climax, this is an affectionate homage that also updates the classics to reflect the seedy underbelly of modern politics.

Expertly and delicately plotted, Certain Women captures subtly transformative periods in each of their lives. Plotted across three vignettes – a lawyer (Laura Dern) is badgered by an obstinate client (Jared Harris), a mother (Michelle Williams) acquires a pile of sandstone bricks from an elderly family friend and Jamie (Lily Gladstone) a ranch hand who becomes besotted with Beth (Kristen Stewart), a young lawyer who is teaching a night class. CLASH

Director: Mohamed Diab Egypt, France, 2017 (Arabic) 97 minutes | Cert: CLUB

TUESDAY 5 DECEMBER Starring: Nelly Karim, Hani Adel, El Sebaii Mohamed

The Egyptian revolution that dislodged Hosni Mubarak in 2011 and its chaotic aftermath continues to give us some fascinating films. Here is the latest. The year is 2013, the army has just unseated Mohamed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, and pro-army and pro-MB factions clash on the streets. A reporter and photographer are arrested and thrown into the back of a police van, which is the sole camera setting; soon, other demonstrators from both sides are chucked in – along with, in one particularly chaotic scene, a lenient cop. They are crowded in there for hours in the boiling heat with no water and a plastic bottle to pee in. Through the grille-meshed window they get glimpses of the turmoil on the city streets. At first, it looks like a no-budget movie with about a dozen people shot in a single location, but the director, Mohamed Diab, stages some spectacular riot scenes outside, which are all the more staggering for intruding on this enclosed space so unexpectedly. What a dynamic piece of cinema.

Sophia Coppola won the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival for her revamp of Don Siegel‘s 1971 film. Coppola crafts an atmosphere of dreaminess and softness, where repressed desires surface in this southern gothic tale of female sexual jealousy. Set in 1864 during the American Civil War in the sun-dappled state of Virginia, a wounded Union soldier (Farrell) is given shelter within an all-female boarding school. His allure soon awakens sexual feelings in Marta (Kidman), Edwina (Dunst) and Alicia (Fanning). Placing the seven women of the boarding house and their potent desires at it’s centre, The Beguiled builds to a deadly conclusion. With vivid and invested performances, Coppola has crafted a sumptuously provoking film. ‘The charge in Sofia Coppola’s remarkable film is sexual, and intense.’ – Wall Street Journal ‘Farrell balances charm with opportunism’ – The Irish Times ‘Coppola tells the story with terrific gusto and insouciant wit’ –

Over 62,000 oil paintings and a cast including Chris O’Dowd and Saoirse Ronan bring the story of Vincent Van Gogh’s life and death to the screen in the world’s first feature-length painted animation. It sounds mad: inspired by a letter Vincent Van Gogh penned in the week before he died, in which he noted that “we cannot speak other than by our paintings”, Oscar-winning filmmaker Hugh Welchman (Peter and the Wolf) and Polish painter Dorota Kobiela decided to make a movie doing exactly that. Hiring an army of painters from across Europe, each trained in the Dutch master’s style, they set out to tell his story the way he himself would. Consequently, every single frame of the resulting film, Loving Vincent, is an oil painting (12 per second!); the noir-like detective plot is drawn from the artist’s many letters; and the cast – O’Dowd and Ronan alongside Douglas Booth, Helen McCrory, Aidan Turner and more, with music by Clint Mansell – were chosen based on their likeness to real-life characters in Van Gogh’s works. But the results, accordingly, speak for themselves. A truly astonishing visual feast, Loving Vincent demands to be seen on the biggest of screens.

Rosalie Blum is a quirky, cockles-warming adaptation of the eponymous graphic-novel trilogy by French artist Camille Jourdy. Debuting writer-director Julien Rappeneau follows Jourdy’s lead and also plays around with narrative structure and audience expectations to keep an otherwise rather familiar story of lonely hearts and wacky-cutesy humour fresh and engaging. The film centres on Vincent, a shy hairdresser in a provincial French town whose overbearing mother lives one floor up in the same building. But life sometimes surprises even the most cautious – He meets up with Rosalie Blum, a mysterious and lonely woman, he is convinced to have already met her. But where? Intrigued, he decides to follow her everywhere, hoping to learn more.

John Hume saw that by harnessing the political influence of the Irish American diaspora in Washington it was possible address the legacy of colonial division in Ireland and to achieve peace. In the Name of Peace: John Hume in America is a compelling feature documentary, narrated by Liam Neeson, with dramatic footage from the conflict in Northern Ireland and stirring accounts by former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter as well as US Congressmen and Senators. This film shows how one man with courage and charisma, inspired by Martin Luther King, mobilised Irish Americans and America to bring an end to years of bloody violence in his homeland. With musical score by Bill Whelan (Riverdance), this beautiful film reminds us of the redemptive powers of politics to overcome hatred and division: in the words of Hume’s fellow Derryman, Seamus Heaney, when, ‘once in a lifetime, the longed-for tidal wave of justice can rise up, and hope and history rhyme’. At a time of great world instability, this is a timely film highlighting creative leadership and the need for steady international co-operation. – Irish Screen America
