When word came that the 2020 Minor League baseball season was officially cancelled at the end of June, Montgomery Biscuits manager Morgan Ensberg went home to Los Angeles. It was rare for the California native to see much of the Pacific Ocean in the summer time. Thanks to COVID-19, he got to enjoy the beaches, which were virtually empty. What was normally a two-hour drive to other parts of Southern California became 20 minutes on empty highways. With all that, Ensberg’s heart was in Alabama and on his players. “I went back to LA knowing the season wasn’t going to happen,” Ensberg said, “but I thought about the players who would lose a year of development and that hurt me the most. There are certain amounts of reps they need to get to the next level and those opportunities were gone.
conversations were how are they doing? Are you able to get outside and do any work? Checking in on them and ask them if they were doing OK. “Most were able to find places and get some reps. Some were able to get a little video and send it. But that’s not ideal. When you are person to person, there is a human connection. It’s not about teaching but gaining trust. They can see your body language or hear the tone of your voice.” Mastrobuoni spent time in New Jersey and was basically isolated for a few weeks, as were most players since nearly everything shut down. He found ways to work out at home and once gyms opened, he was a regular. “When nothing was open, I was doing (elastic arm) bands but once the gyms open, we were basically able to do the workouts,” he said. Continued on Page 24
“Being a pro has an age shelf life. When you rely on the youthfulness of your body, it makes a difference. I was hoping that the pandemic would shoot down and we’d have an abbreviated season. They needed reps.” The players were equally disappointed, not knowing at the time, what the future held for the upcoming season. “It was frustrating since we waited for two weeks thinking we might get to play,” stated Biscuits infielder Miles Mastrobuoni. “We never got a full answer. It was a shot to the heart. You don’t get back that year.” There might have been some solace in watching the parent club, Tampa Bay, reach the World Series, but that was also bittersweet. The Rays would lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games. Ensberg and the players stayed in touch, mostly through ZOOM calls. Instruction was also present. “I had position players but ironically I didn’t have any players in Montgomery,” Ensberg said. “Those

One of the saddest bits of baseball-related news I received since the start of the pandemic occurred on February 18, 2021, when the Double-A South schedule was released. Don’t get me wrong, even though the former Southern League had a different name and had shrunk in size with the departures of the Jackson Generals and Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the fact that there were games scheduled on a calendar was as auspicious a sign as any that Biscuits baseball was set to return for the first time since 2019. And despite learning that a handful of clubs in this league won’t even play each other this year, I, for one, was grateful, because the Biscuits weren’t one of those handful of teams. They would play all seven of their Double-A South opponents, including the Rocket City Trash Pandas in their inaugural season, at least once. Chattanooga, Tennessee is one of the best small cities in America. Let me say that again: Chattanooga, Tennessee is one of the best small cities in America. I’m not kidding. If you haven’t been, it’s time to go. Like, right now. Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains with the Tennessee River winding through its heart, Chattanooga sits at the nexus of the southeast. 118 miles from Atlanta, 112 miles from Knoxville, 134 miles from Nashville, 102 miles from Huntsville, and 147 miles from Birmingham, Gig City—named for having what is allegedly the fastest internet service in the Western Hemisphere (however you measure that)— may be the greatest location of any city in the south. And it really has it all: a vibrant downtown with tasty restaurants, sumptuous hotels, lively bars and breweries. Not to mention it’s one of the most walkable cities in the south. And although I sit and broadcast baseball most of the time I’m there, whenever I have some down time, I’m walking across the Walnut Street Bridge, the second-longest pedestrian bridge in the nation. I’m walking around the famous Tennessee Aquarium, maybe the best in the south. (I’m getting a Lyft) and then walking around Lookout Mountain,
where a historic Civil War battle was fought. Then I’m walking through Rock City and viewing seven US states from its lookout point. I’m walking (underground) to Ruby Falls, a literal waterfall within the bowels of Lookout Mountain. It’s impossible to be bored while walking around Tennessee’s fourth-largest city. In the words of NFL Hall-of-Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens, who went to UT-Chattanooga: Get your popcorn ready. And we can’t forget the Lookouts, the oldest member of the Double-A South. They’ve been around since 1885—just twenty years following the conclusion of the Civil War. Named for Lookout Mountain, the club, whose unmistakable logo with its bulging eyes ensconced in a bright red ‘C’ almost lulls you to sleep, is nothing to thumb your nose at, especially in recent history. Chattanooga took home the Southern League crown my first year in the league in 2015 thanks to now Major League studs Max Kepler, Miguel Sano, and Byron Buxton, and then did it again two years later against the Biscuits, capping off a remarkable year in which they won an otherworldly 91 games (including 20 against Montgomery in the regular season) before winning the Championship in dramatic fashion on a walk-off, backs-against-the-wall, three-outs-awayfrom-being-eliminated, two-run bottom-of-the-ninth home run off the bat of Jonathan Rodriguez to blow the roof off AT&T Field and break Montgomery hearts. That is still the most emotionally-charged baseball game I’ve ever called. A gut-wrenching loss for the Biscuits, but to worthy opponents in a rivalry that runs deep. The Lookouts even played at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery during the 1943 season. AT&T Field’s gates always open to the mellifluous, old-timey tones of the Andrews’ Sisters’ “Chattanooga Choo Choo” reverberating around the stadium. And whether you’re coming to watch the Biscuits on the road there with your family, friends, or yourself, you’re bound to have a memorable time in Chattanooga. In fact, I’d be surprised if you didn’t have a hard time leaving. I guess what I’m saying is…Lookout. For a great time, that is.

how to keep score Starting Lineup & Position Numbers Fill in the starting lineup. Starting lineups can be found in the main gate foyer located by the box office. Each position is assigned a number. These numbers will be used when you record fielding plays • Pitcher - 1 • Catcher - 2 • First Base - 3 • Second Base - 4 • Third Base - 5 • Shortstop - 6 • Left Field - 7 • Center Field - 8 • Right Field - 9 • Designated Hitter - DH Scoring Plays Once each batter is finished with his at-bat, fill in what happened in the appropriate inning column next to that player’s name. Shorthand for plays are listed to the right. Here are examples of how to score certain plays: • Ground Out: The third baseman fields the ball and throws to first base for the out. That would be scored as 5-3. • Fly Out: The batter hits a fly out to the left fielder. That would be scored as F-7. • Strikeout: Simply write a K if the batter strikes out. If the batter strikes out looking (not swinging), then a backward K is used to score. • Single: If the batter hits a single, act as if there is a diamond shape in the scoring box and draw a line to first base. Simply write 1B in the corner. You will use this diamond pattern to chart each runner’s path around the bases. • Scoring: If any of the runners end up scoring, you will complete the diamond shape and shade it in.

“If you think about it, we were the only (sports) entity that was starting over,” stated Biscuits general manager Michael Murphy. “All the other leagues got a partial season in before shut down. The Majors got theirs in albeit a short season of 60 games. Football got played… the NBA. Minor league baseball is the only one to come back not having any sort of a season in 2020.” The wait is finally over as every team in the minors began play the first week of May. There are a few modifications to the schedule including no play on Monday. All series are six games. Seating capacity is still a work-in-progress.
A big factor for everyone as the game returns – the games will be played in front of fans. “It’s always great,” Mastrobuoni said. “It gives you extra adrenaline. It gets you going.” “They love playing in front of people,” Ensberg added. It is very, very, very important to them. It provides more energy. They want to show people what they can do - what they are best at. “I hope fans will come out. I hope we provide some normalcy.”
Ensberg was encouraged by what he saw from the players heading into workouts, which began in early April. “They didn’t skip a beat,” he said of the players. “They were in incredible shape. I was shocked by their sharpness. They looked great. It is a testament to the fact that we have the best minor league system in the game.”
