Ford Proctor had been bounced around to different infield positions during the 2019 season at Bowling Green, but he was looking for a different challenge after minor league baseball was shut down by COVID-19 in 2020. “During some down time, I talked to my agent a little bit and some other guys and figured it would be a good idea to pick up a new position that would help bring some value and increase my versatility, which is a big thing with the Rays,” he said. He had played shortstop, second base and third base during his 2019 season with the Hot Rods, but now he figured he would add catcher to his resume. “Growing up, I played it a little bit,” Proctor reasoned. “And coaches have always asked me if I could do it, but I never really took it to heart. Finally, this past year, I thought it would be a good thing to add on. Plus, I’m enjoying it, which is an added bonus.”
with a strong offensive performance that only improved with two summer trips to play in the Cape Cod League. The first two years at Rice, interestingly enough, paired him with future Biscuit Tristan Gray, the Owls’ second baseman. “We actually work out in the offseason together,” Proctor said. “I live in Houston and he lives in the Houston area, so we work out at the same gym. We keep in touch throughout the season, to see how each other is doing.” After spending 2018 in Rookie ball, Proctor showed some versatility in 2019 with 112 starts at shortstop, 51 at second base and 12 at third base while hitting .290 with the Hot Rods.
Montgomery already had returning veteran Rene Pinto and Joey Roach, who played at Port Charlotte in 2019 (along with injured catcher Chris Betts). Working alongside Pinto and Roach provided valuable insight to a guy learning a new position. “Both those guys have been catching their whole lives, so when we’re practicing or working on receiving, blocking, throwing, whatever, if they see something, they’ve been great in helping me,” Proctor said. “If I’m feeling uncomfortable with something, I’ll ask them because they’ve played the position their whole life and they’re good back there.” Proctor’s move has certainly enhanced his value as a minor-league player, particularly to an organization that loves versatility, but he was labeled a can’t-miss prospect when he was drafted out of Rice in 2018. He moved into the starting role at shortstop in the second game of his freshman season with the Owls -- no small feat at the toughest infield position in a premier college baseball program -- and held on to it for three years

Just saying the name “Jackson” should be enough to send more than a few chills down the spines of Biscuits fans, what with the Jackson Generals having eliminated the Butter and Blue from three of the last four Southern League playoffs. Thankfully the Biscuits no longer have to worry about the former West Tenn Diamond Jaxx…and also, when I say Jackson, I’m not referring to the Tennessee metropolis, but rather Mississippi’s capital city. And there’s a whole lot more to Mississippi’s most populous city than its inclusion in that Bruno Mars song (Ride from Harlem…Hollywood… Jackson, Mississippi!). Situated on the Pearl River and located in the greater Jackson Prairie region of Mississippi, Jackson is the westernmost city in the Double-A South. And while I could give you the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, the Mississippi Museum of Art, or the Jackson Zoo as places of interest to check out on your next visit, it all comes back to one thing and one thing only for me: the food. A personal favorite is the Big Apple Inn on the outskirts of downtown Jackson. A mere hole in the wall, the Big Apple Inn gained national attention when the late Anthony Bourdain visited the eatery on his famous show Parts Unknown during the last decade. The Big Apple Inn specializes in Pig Ear sandwiches, which look exactly like they sound. They’re certainly worth a try for around a dollar each, along with a sausage sandwich and delicious tamales. Frisco Deli has some of the best catfish in town, and
it’s not too far from Trustmark Park, the home of the Mississippi Braves in Pearl. A’Ha Donut & More belies the succulent wagyu burger served within its walls. It’s one of the best burgers in town. If you’re really feeling adventurous you can make the quick 45-minute drive west on I-20 to Rusty’s Riverfront Grill in Vicksburg, MS. The site of one of the Civil War’s most pivotal battles is also home to Rusty’s famous fried green tomatoes smothered in hollandaise sauce and lump crab, which changed my life for the better in late May of this year. And when you return to Pearl, make sure you take in an M-Braves game at Trustmark Park, which still has the biggest videoboard in the Double-A South. I know most of you reading this are Braves fans as well, so what an opportunity to watch the Biscuits take on some of Atlanta’s youngest, brightest prospects in of the league’s most spacious ballparks (Trustmark has the same dimensions as the Braves’ old home, Turner Field). You never know who’s going to become the next Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies, or Ronald Acuna.

how to keep score Starting Lineup & Position Numbers Fill in the starting lineup. Starting lineups can be found in the main gate foyer located by the box office. Each position is assigned a number. These numbers will be used when you record fielding plays • Pitcher - 1 • Catcher - 2 • First Base - 3 • Second Base - 4 • Third Base - 5 • Shortstop - 6 • Left Field - 7 • Center Field - 8 • Right Field - 9 • Designated Hitter - DH Scoring Plays Once each batter is finished with his at-bat, fill in what happened in the appropriate inning column next to that player’s name. Shorthand for plays are listed to the right. Here are examples of how to score certain plays: • Ground Out: The third baseman fields the ball and throws to first base for the out. That would be scored as 5-3. • Fly Out: The batter hits a fly out to the left fielder. That would be scored as F-7. • Strikeout: Simply write a K if the batter strikes out. If the batter strikes out looking (not swinging), then a backward K is used to score. • Single: If the batter hits a single, act as if there is a diamond shape in the scoring box and draw a line to first base. Simply write 1B in the corner. You will use this diamond pattern to chart each runner’s path around the bases. • Scoring: If any of the runners end up scoring, you will complete the diamond shape and shade it in.

“I feel like if you can play short, you can play any other position,” Proctor said, “and I’ve played second and third in high school and summer ball or college and summer ball. Everyone on the team was a shortstop so I could rotate positions and play second or third and, of course, short. So it got me used to playing all the positions.” Catcher was another matter, so when he saw an opportunity to spend the winter months playing in the Australian Baseball League, he seized it. He had worked out at catcher at the Rays’ alternate training site in September and played in instructional league camp but here was an opportunity to play games in front of crowds in a winter league. Proctor was one of seven players from the Rays’ minor league organization sent to the Perth Heat just before Thanksgiving. “The whole reason I went down there was to catch, just to get some games under my belt before I went into spring training and this season,” Proctor said. “But it was cool. COVID, pretty much, was nonexistent down there. They’re strict with their protocols, which is why they’ve been able to handle the situation well, but we got down there and had a two-week quarantine in a hotel. It turned out to be worth it because once you get out, everything is back to normal -- no masks, no restrictions at restaurants, no occupancy rules. It was like going back to 2019. “And Australia is a beautiful place. We were close to the beach in Perth and there’s a river that goes through the city. We were right on the water. It was awesome.”
“I kind of got off to a slow start,” he said. “I’m starting to feel better now. I don’t find it to be extremely difficult. I mean, there’s good players but it’s just another level you have to adjust to and adapt to.” It’s good that he has Gray, who is at Triple-A Durham, on speed dial because the former college teammate went through a similar slow start at Montgomery in 2019. “We’ve talked and he’s just kind of told me to hang in there and keep going and the success will come,” Proctor said. Meanwhile, at catcher, he continues to get as much work as Pinto, the returning starter. Former Montgomery teammate Shane Baz, recently promoted to Durham, had nothing but praise for Proctor. “This is hi s first year,” Baz said. “He just started catching this year and he’s been really good. I’m fine with either of those guys back there.” Proctor said the transition would be complete whenever people quit referring to him as the new guy. “I feel like I learn something every time I go out there,” he said. “I’m always talking to our catching guys. They help me along. I always hate when people say ‘I’m just starting’ because I want to get to the point where I’m as comfortable back there as I am at shortstop.”
But while Proctor prepared to catch for the first time at the Double-A level, the “can’t-miss” part of his profile -- his bat -- has been slow to adjust to the higher level.
