As mayor of the great city of Montgomery, Alabama – the Capital of Dreams, we are honored to welcome you to Riverwalk Stadium – home of the Butter and Blue, our Montgomery Biscuits! Get ready for a season filled with exciting games, spectacular fireworks, uniquely themed events and delicious ballpark food. If the record-breaking attendance of 7,896 fans at the 2019 MAX Capital City Classic is any indicator, this year will also bring more visitors than ever! Of course, it helps that tourism is booming in the Capital of Dreams! Montgomery continues leading the state in hotel occupancy rates, and we’ll see several more hotels come online soon. As we near our city’s bicentennial, there is even more to see, celebrate and commemorate. Over the past 200 years, Montgomery has played a part in America’s most pivotal moments. It was here the telegram was sent ordering troops to fire on Ft. Sumter, Rosa Parks stood defiant in the face of injustice and Dr. King envisioned a better path for the American people. Still today, the eyes of the world turn to Montgomery as we lead the conversation on human rights, justice and reconciliation thanks to the opening of EJI’s National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum. Of course, Montgomery has also long served as the nation’s incubator – or its living lab. The Wright Brothers opened their first civilian flight school in Montgomery. Dr. Hill performed the continent’s first open heart surgery here. And the launch of our Lightning Route marked the advent of the electric streetcar, altering urban transportation forever. Today, dreams are still the best kind of currency in Montgomery! Investment is following the innovators who are coming to capitalize on visionary ideas thanks to our work in creating a culture geared toward entrepreneurial success! We recently launched a public-private partnership leveraging the latest in technology and smart city infrastructure to enhance overall quality of life and prime the pump for private-sector innovation. This includes the free high-speed Wi-Fi you can catch right here at Riverwalk and throughout downtown, as well as new parking tools to get you in the gates faster. These upgrades have even led to national awards positioning Montgomery as a leader among Smart Cities. More than a decade ago, the vibrancy, entertainment and beauty you see now was just a dream. Thanks to a unified vision, hard work and commitment to revitalizing our city – plus a BIG shot in the arm from the Montgomery Biscuits, Montgomery’s downtown is experiencing a true renaissance. We’re happy you’re here to experience all of it. Enjoy the game, and Go Biscuits!

welcome to riverwalk! Dear Biscuits Fans, Welcome back for what will be an exciting and fun-filled 2019 season of Biscuits Baseball here at Riverwalk Stadium. We have been working nonstop since the final pitch of last year’s playoffs to create a promotional schedule and ballpark environment that will be the best that any of our fans and neighbors have seen in Montgomery. We are in the memory-making business and we will make great memories together this season. In 2018, we announced that we would have the most extensive promotional calendar in team history and we delivered. Your Biscuits were honored to receive the Southern League’s 2018 Promotional Award. We are also proud that the Southern League awarded us the 2018 Patriot Award for the best support of, and engagement with, Military personnel and Veterans. We love our Military and Veterans and are grateful for our great relationship with the folks at Maxwell Air Force Base. These accolades would not have been possible without the tremendous response from our fans and business partners throughout the River Region. In 2019, we will continue to push the envelope promotionally (remember Millennial Night? ) and expand our outreach to our community. Our staff has established a new Reading Program, which promotes literacy in schools and has led to Big Mo making over 100 community appearances. The 2019 season will also mark the beginning of MGM Fridays at the ballpark, where we will honor and recognize the great people of Montgomery and celebrate civic pride. I promise you that the best is yet to come for Biscuits fans. Whether that be through school programs and community outreach, or promotional giveaways and special events, we will never stop adding more value and surprises for our fans. With each new promotion and upgrade that is planned for 2019, we have one goal in mind; to be the best that we can be and an impactful part of the fabric of the greater Montgomery area. Enjoy the game! All the best, Lou DiBella CEO and Managing Owner Montgomery Biscuits

ED. NOTE: On Friday, June 15, the Biscuits will honor minor league baseball in Montgomery with a special Montgomery Rebels Throwback Night to commemorate the illustrious past of the game in the Capital City. River Region Sports takes a look back at the history of the game and its relationship between team and community. Montgomery has always had a love affair with minor league baseball. Better yet, there is a certain kind of love for the players who have come through. Through the years, Montgomery’s teams have been successful and several players have gone on to careers in Major League Baseball. Many of those stars played for the Rebels in the 1970s when the ultra-successful franchise brought home five Southern League pennants in six years.
Trammell, Whitaker, Parrish, Jack Morris, Jim Leyland, Gene Lamont and Mark “The Bird” Fidrych are just a few of the names that played or managed in the big leagues. “It was a special time,” former Rebels catcher Ted Brazell said. “I was a part of three championships. Most of those (players) were part of the run Detroit made.” “It is amazing that so many played (in Montgomery) that went on to the majors,” Burnside added. “But a lot of history was made here - a lot of good memories. You see the same now with Tampa and the number of players that come through here with the Biscuit” Before becoming an eight-time MLB All-Star catcher, Parrish was part of Montgomery’s pennant-winning team in 1976. He built a strong bond with his teammates and that what would be the nucleus of the Tigers’ 1984 World Series champs. “We do spend a lot of time together so you can’t help but form bonds and relationships with players,” stated Parrish, who spent 19 years in the Bigs. “We obviously had a great year, winning the Southern League championship, even though it was pretty hot that summer. That year (’76), we were just grinding. I didn’t think for any period of time that I was there that we were that much better than any other team. We just played better at the end.” The Rebels redefined the Southern League in the 1970s, winning the West and sweeping Asheville in 1972, beating Jacksonville in 1973, sweeping Orlando in 1975 and taking out Orlando again in 1976 as the current format was adopted. The second-half West champion Rebels defeated Chattanooga before advancing to the finals against Orlando.

how to keep score Starting Lineup & Position Numbers Fill in the starting lineup. Starting lineups can be found in the main gate foyer located by the box office. Each position is assigned a number. These numbers will be used when you record fielding plays • Pitcher - 1 • Catcher - 2 • First Base - 3 • Second Base - 4 • Third Base - 5 • Shortstop - 6 • Left Field - 7 • Center Field - 8 • Right Field - 9 • Designated Hitter - DH Scoring Plays Once each batter is finished with his at-bat, fill in what happened in the appropriate inning column next to that player’s name. Shorthand for plays are listed to the right. Here are examples of how to score certain plays: • Ground Out: The third baseman fields the ball and throws to first base for the out. That would be scored as 5-3. • Fly Out: The batter hits a fly out to the left fielder. That would be scored as F-7. • Strikeout: Simply write a K if the batter strikes out. If the batter strikes out looking (not swinging), then a backward K is used to score. • Single: If the batter hits a single, act as if there is a diamond shape in the scoring box and draw a line to first base. Simply write 1B in the corner. You will use this diamond pattern to chart each runner’s path around the bases. • Scoring: If any of the runners end up scoring, you will complete the diamond shape and shade it in.

In 1977, the Rebels won the West with a 24.5-game lead over Chattanooga on the way to another crown. The final three years, the Rebels finished seventh, eighth and sixth as attendance fell and the club was sold to Birmingham.
And while many of those players never make it to the majors, they often play opposing players who do – such as Rollie Fingers, Reggie Jackson, Tony LaRussa, Eddie Murray, Cal Ripken and Denny McLain – or have the MLB come to Montgomery.
Those former teams, just as the Biscuits do today, hold a special place in the hearts and minds of local sports enthusiasts who come to the ballpark hoping to catch a glimpse of a future big leaguer and often fall in love with a player who epitomizes the sport but will never make it to “The Show.”
Some of the greatest names in baseball visited Cramton Bowl or Paterson Field to take on the Lions/ Bombers/Rebels in exhibition baseball, including the New York Yankees (1928, 1941, 1942, 1948), Cleveland Indians (1928), Washington Senators (1929), Brooklyn Dodgers (1929, 1948, 1950), Boston Red Sox (1930), Philadelphia Phillies (1938, 1949), Philadelphia A’s (1953), St. Louis Cardinals (1939, 1941), Cincinnati Reds (1949) and Detroit Tigers (1950).
“I’m aware of what is happening in Montgomery and I’m impressed with the job that has been done by the staff there,” said Parrish, who is currently a manager in the Tigers’ farm system at Single A West Michigan in Grand Rapids. “I have heard nothing but good things about the Biscuits organization.” “Montgomery is a great town for baseball,” Brazell added. “And they’ve been very good to me.” Once Burnside’s career had ended with his final stop in Cincinnati, he chose to return to Alabama and raise a family. “I had a choice to go back to Canada (where he was born) or settle back in Montgomery where my wife was from,” he said. “It was pretty simple. When I was looking for a job, I would tell someone I played for the Rebels and that usually created a conversation.”
Since their careers ended, both Burnside and Brazell impacted Montgomery baseball in different ways. Both gave birth to sons that had significant careers in professional baseball. Both have also influenced several young players through coaching and instruction. “Baseball may have been my career for six or seven years,” Burnside said, “but I guess I’ve come full circle in coaching kids at AUM (Dixie Youth) which was so much fun…. And I’m about ready to go at it again with my grandchildren!”
