Garrett Whitley was the 13th overall pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft. His selection in the first round came with plenty of expectations. No problem. And forget the fear of that supposed unlucky number. “I was born on the 13th (of March),” Whitley said when asked if he was superstitious. Whitley is settling in with the Montgomery Biscuits after unexpected interruptions early in his career. He is set as one of the top outfielders in the Double-A South, a.k.a Southern League. “He is as advertised: a very athletic outfielder, good tools, good upside, the kind of raw materials you love to be able to take and put in your system and watch them grow and develop over the next several years,” stated Rays president of baseball operations Matt Silverman.

“It was a grind,” Whitley explained. “I missed not being out there. I had to sit at home, barely able to raise my arm. That went on for a couple of months. Baseball is my outlet… if I’m upset I want to go hit. It helps me keep my mind off things. I had to find other ways since I would go to the facility but not able to hit. “It may me appreciate the game more. I was happy to be out on the field but I then knew what it was like to have it taken away from me. Now, I appreciate every moment out there.” The injury had to prepare him for what would happen last season when the season was called off due to COVID-19. “It gave me a little bit of perspective but it was different,” he said. “Since we didn’t really know what was going on, I actually didn’t go home since it was too cold to get my work in. It wasn’t a total loss but it was a different tough.” What did he do while he waited? Whitley put his cooking skills to work. “I like to make everything but I really like Italian food. I put a lot of work into Chicken Parmesan,” he said.

Whitley is into his third full season as a pro, although he has dealt with a major injury during his development. Last year was a wash for all minor league players but his career was dealt another pause two years earlier when he suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder and had to undergo surgery.

After the MLB Draft, the native of Niskayuna, NY didn’t need long to decide whether or not to play at Wake Forest, even though he was an honor student and had thoughts of helping the Demon Deacons battle in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

He missed the entire 2018 season.

how to keep score Starting Lineup & Position Numbers Fill in the starting lineup. Starting lineups can be found in the main gate foyer located by the box office. Each position is assigned a number. These numbers will be used when you record fielding plays • Pitcher - 1 • Catcher - 2 • First Base - 3 • Second Base - 4 • Third Base - 5 • Shortstop - 6 • Left Field - 7 • Center Field - 8 • Right Field - 9 • Designated Hitter - DH Scoring Plays Once each batter is finished with his at-bat, fill in what happened in the appropriate inning column next to that player’s name. Shorthand for plays are listed to the right. Here are examples of how to score certain plays: • Ground Out: The third baseman fields the ball and throws to first base for the out. That would be scored as 5-3. • Fly Out: The batter hits a fly out to the left fielder. That would be scored as F-7. • Strikeout: Simply write a K if the batter strikes out. If the batter strikes out looking (not swinging), then a backward K is used to score. • Single: If the batter hits a single, act as if there is a diamond shape in the scoring box and draw a line to first base. Simply write 1B in the corner. You will use this diamond pattern to chart each runner’s path around the bases. • Scoring: If any of the runners end up scoring, you will complete the diamond shape and shade it in.

“It was a pretty easy decision,” Whitley said. “I always had wanted to play professional baseball. It was a dream for a long time. The money didn’t hurt either. “If I had been taken lower, it would have been a difficult choice. I was excited to play for Wake Forest but this was my dream.” Whitley and his family were in the MLB Network studios in New York to hear his name called on draft night. A trip of about two hours from home was easy and it gave him a chance to meet some of his childhood heroes. “I did get to go, which was awesome,” he said. “It is a special day for the draft picks. I got to celebrate with family and friends. I got to meet a bunch of my heroes… (former Red Sox) Tim Wakefield, Johnny Damon… I met Ken Griffey, Jr. It was great to see players I watched while I grew up. To be around them and in that environment, it was a great experience.”

“I don’t look at it any differently but I know people do,” Whitley said. “I expect a lot out of myself so whatever my expectations are, the ones I have are more important. I expect more of myself than what others do. “I try not to measure (success) by my stats. The way I feel about it is I want hits but I can’t control that. How did I feel on that at bat? Did I swing at good pitches? Was I comfortable? It’s about where I am versus stats.” What he expects in 2021 is to get in a full season and he is excited to do it in front of Biscuits fans. “We’ve only been there (a few) weeks. We’ve been on the road a lot so I’m adjusting to the heat but I really like the ballpark. We had a good turnout for the first games. (We had) great support from the fans so we all appreciate that.”

In other sports, a first-round choice has more than his share of pressure, particularly in basketball and football. Whitley is aware of the expectations but his are internal.

Las Vegas holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans. Did I say many? Maybe a handful is a more appropriate description. Or perhaps it’s for those Americans who have an affinity for gambling, fireworks, thrills, and the like. And while Birmingham has a direct Southwest Airlines flight to Sin City, that’s a day-long excursion to the desert. Might I suggest a more accessible alternative to meet each of those needs that doesn’t involve a plane (unless you own a private jet)? Biloxi. Or as my ignorant northern behind thought it was pronounced: Bill-OX-ee (turns out that’s not how you pronounce it. Who knew?). Just a three-hour and change (which you’ll need for the slot machines) drive from Montgomery, this small city of under 50,000 people is like a little Las Vegas on the Gulf. Some (maybe just me?) might even refer to it as ‘Lux Vegas. And while the casinos, like the waterfront Beau Rivage and Hard Rock to name a couple, are perhaps Biloxi’s calling card, there is even more to this little city then what meets the eye…or your wallet. Devasted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Biloxi went from being Mississippi’s third-largest city to its fifthlargest, and has been rebuilding ever since. But even as we near the end of the coronavirus pandemic, it appears that Biloxi is starting to return to its former self.

When you think Mississippi, you don’t necessarily think coast. But Biloxi has a good one. Its beachfront lies on Mississippi Sound at some of the northernmost edges of the Gulf of Mexico, with its famous white lighthouse standing tall by Biloxi Beach. Take a stroll along the beach and dip your toes in the water before heading over to Mary Mahoney’s Old French House or Half Shell Oyster House for some tasty seafood. Then make your way to MGM Park, in the shadow of the Beau Rivage, to take in a Shuckers game, especially if the Biscuits are in town. You won’t have access to the famous pressbox spread (one of the best in the Double-A South), including its giant chocolate chip cookies, in one of the league’s newest stadiums, but MGM Park has plenty of great food to offer as well as a solid craft beer selection. And when the game is over, you can celebrate the Biscuits win over the Shuckers by crossing the street, and gambling the night away at the Beau Rivage. And if you get the late-night munchies, there is always the nearby Waffle House. I’m not saying what happens in Biloxi stays in Biloxi, because that’s not the expression. But there is something for everyone in Mississippi’s fifth-largest city, and you’re bound to enjoy yourselves in this little pearl of fun on the Gulf.
