BISHOP GORMAN HIGH SCHOOL 19TH ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE We would like to welcome everyone to Bishop Gorman’s annual Open House. This booklet serves as a guide to all of the activities that will be taking place. Please make time to visit the Gym where clubs, organizations and sports teams are located. Some highlights for the afternoon include:  The music, dance and drama performances in the Theatre complex  The Admissions workshop at 1:15 and 2:45; the Financial Aid workshop at 1:45 and 2:15; both in the Student Commons  The experiments in the Science Department, Rooms 313, 316, 317 & 320  Student led tours that begin in the Chapel Courtyard or the Student Commons  The Mock Trial Team in Room 309  The College Planning Program presentation at 1:30, 2:00 and 2:30 in Room 300

Come meet with Mrs. Wozniak, the Director of Admissions, to have all of your questions regarding the admissions process, the Placement Exam and course registration answered. Presentations will be given at 1:15 and 2:45. Additionally, visit the IMET Center Library if you would like to complete our online application and register for the Placement Exam while on campus.

Visit the south end of the 100 hallway to see all that the BG Visual Arts Program has to offer! Hallway display cases will have current student work. Additionally, students will be participating in open studio time to draw, paint and work with ceramics. Visitors to the dark room will have an opportunity to view a display of student projects and speak to photography students about how they develop their own photos.

The Athletic Training Center offers strength conditioning for our student-athletes, a fitness center for all of our students and faculty, trainer’s room, lecture hall, nutrition bar, offices and locker rooms. This facility also boasts a fully-equipped reception center for use by the Bishop Gorman community. Tours of the ATC will be available from 2:30 – 3:00. Please meet in the Activity Foyer (between the gym and theatre).

Parents and students are invited to come and see the BGTV studio. Visitors will have the opportunity to see how our students gain hands-on experience in producing film and TV programs as producer, camera operator, director, lighting designer, editor, on-air talent and more.

Come experience our Campus Store where you’ll find exciting spirit gear for the entire family.

Join us in the computer lab for a video presentation of student work from Computer Programming, Computer Graphics and Digital Photo classes. Students will be participating in open lab time to work on current projects.

Join our college counselor, Mr. McAllister, to learn about the comprehensive College Planning Program offered to our students. Presentations given at 1:30, 2:00 and 2:30.

Counselors will be available to discuss the Placement Exam, the Summer Enrichment Program, PSAT, AP Exams and Proficiency Testing at Bishop Gorman as well as to explain the differences between the College Prep, Honors and Scholars diplomas.

Do you have questions regarding the difference between English 1 College Prep, English 1 Honors and English 1 Scholars? If so, please come and visit the English Department in Room 201. Visitors will have an opportunity to view student displays, posters and projects. English books, book lists and course curriculum will be available. Join us in room 203 to learn more about our Creative Writing Club. Information will also be available regarding the Scholastic Art and Writing Scholarship program, which is open to students in grades th th 7 – 12 .

LEARNING CENTER

Stop by the Learning Center and speak with the Director, Mrs. Porrello and Learning Specialists, Mr. Cooley, Mrs. Davis and Mr. Rivera. The Learning Center offers services for students with a diagnosed mild learning difference due to a learning disability, ADHD, medical conditions, etc. A variety of assistance is available to help students experience success in a college-preparatory curriculum. Applications for the Learning Center will also be available.

IMET CENTER LIBRARY

See how traditional and digitized resources combine to provide students with a large and diverse local and virtual library collection, designed to enhance and enrich our students’ learning experiences and meet their curricular goals, while ensuring that they become informed digital citizens as they prepare for college. Visit the BGHS Library, part of the Information Media & Technology (IMET) Center, and see a friendly environment in which students can collaborate, research, learn and study. Redesigned and highly upgraded with 28 new computers in the summer of 2011, the IMET Center Library now houses 10 state-of-the-art HP TouchSmart 610 all-in-one desktop computers with nextgeneration touch applications; eight HP 3200 Elite desktop computers; and 10 HP ProBook laptop computers. With this updated computing hardware, our new web-based, Follett Destiny library catalog and advanced digital resources, our IMET Center Library provides our students with a complete 21st-century research and learning experience. In order to provide quality and varied materials for student information and research needs, the BGHS IMET Center Library houses print media in addition to affording access to a variety of electronic information media via subscriptions to five database services. Through these services, students have access to more than 35 databases through several highly-regarded secondary and college-level collections. Also, the library’s virtual collection consists of specialized reference resources for ondemand multidisciplinary research. Through all of these online resources, students have access to materials not available to them on the “open web” through search engines such as Google and Bing, as well as numerous web resources that have been evaluated for content appropriate to our students’ coursework. Come in and experience our digital resources and our upgraded technology for yourself!

The Math Department will have a PowerPoint presentation outlining the math curriculum and describing the three levels of math: College Prep, Honors and Scholars/Advanced Placement. The presentation will include the projected math path for students, including how a student is placed in a math class initially, monitored throughout the year and progresses during their four years at Bishop Gorman.

The Math Honor Society will have videos and demonstrations highlighting projects that students have made to explain math concepts. Examples will include using volume formulas to predict the amount of candy in a jar.

Parents and students will have an opportunity to come and find out how the Math Department incorporates technology into their daily lessons. We will present the use of e-texts within our math curriculum.

Visitors will have an opportunity to visit the darkroom where students will explain how they develop their own photos. Student projects will be on display.

Journalism students will be working on The Lance student newspaper and Yearbook staff members will be working and designing yearbook pages for The Archive. Students and parents will be able to view previous copies of The Lance and The Archive.

Students and parents will have an opportunity to examine the books for all science courses as well as the syllabi and student projects from Marine Biology, Earth Science and Environmental Science.

Honors students will put together a skeleton from a pile of bones and they would appreciate your input in reconstructing the skeleton and naming all of the parts. Visitors will also have an opportunity to test their reflexes with the help of some of our students. Activities will take place every 30 minutes beginning at 1:15.

Students and parents will have the opportunity to explore how using technology can increase the analysis of lab experiments. Students in our AP Biology and Scholars Biology courses will demonstrate the use of the Lab Quest and the probes.

Chemistry Is All Around Us Paper Chromatography - Do you enjoy watching shows based on forensics? Do you wonder about the techniques that scientists use to separate and identify different molecules, such as DNA? Stop by room 316 to learn about paper chromatography. You will attempt to separate the different molecules found in markers and pens, and possibly create a work of art. Experiments will be conducted at 1:30, 2:00 and 2:30.

The Magic of Physics – Students and parents will have the opportunity to participate in several activities and then understand the physics behind them. Get a Charge - Come and find out about electric fields and charges. See what happens when we fire up the Van De Graaff generator and create an electric charge on a metal sphere and cause it to jump to another metal sphere. Experiments will be conducted at 1:30 and 2:30.


SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT

Room 310 will host an overview of the social studies curriculum with department faculty members. Textbooks, syllabi and student projects will be available. In addition, try your skill at US History Revolutionary War Jeopardy!

Our award winning Mock Trial team will conduct a live practice session in Room 309. Come to room 312 for a discussion and demonstration of our Cultural Geography program.

As we move forward to meet the needs of the 21st century student, the first phase of our north expansion is in process and is scheduled for completion by August 2013. This phase will include: • Expansion of the Commons to accommodate 750 students • Two additional lecture halls • An education building with 10 classrooms • Two science labs and two computer labs • A lighted practice field for football, soccer and lacrosse • Additional student parking and a landscaped park-like quadrangle 15
