On September 7, 1954 Bishop Gorman High School opened as the only Catholic high school in Southern Nevada with the vision to provide students with an unparalleled college preparatory education in an environment distinguished by Catholic values. Bishop Gorman has been rooted in the fabric of Las Vegas for sixty years, never straying from our founders’ initial vision. We continue to welcome students who seek quality, Catholic college preparatory education from all socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds throughout the Las Vegas community. Leaders of today and tomorrow continue to benefit greatly from the spiritual and academic formation that is central to the Bishop Gorman experience. In 2OO7 Bishop Gorman High School moved to its current Summerlin campus in order to meet the demands of the growing Las Vegas population. Since that time the campus has expanded and currently sits on 56 acres at the base of the beautiful Spring Mountain Range. Our state of the art facilities allow us to provide our students with every opportunity they need to succeed in today’s competitive environment.

Fr. Thomas R. von Behren, C.S.V. Provincial – Clerics of St. Viator President of Bishop Gorman: 1993-1999

“From the very first day that it opened its doors in 1954, Bishop Gorman began its strong tradition of proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and raising up a community of young people rooted in the Catholic faith. I am proud to speak on behalf of the founding group of priests and brothers who helped to create a school with vision, compassion, and a deep commitment to educational excellence. The mission of Bishop Gorman continues to reflect the past 6O years that have shaped so many lives and contributed so much to the Las Vegas culture.” 1

“As an alum and a parent I was honored to be a part of the development of the Summerlin campus. The process of expanding the campus was taken very seriously by all those involved. It was important to us to maintain the look and feel of the campus. Today we have arguably some of the best high school facilities in the country that our community can be proud of. Bishop Gorman has always had a great tradition of excellence, now we have the facilities to match our reputation.”

“Bishop Gorman students are very proud of their community - a community that values academics, spirituality and the development of the whole person. It is very clear to me that the faculty and administrators really care for the students in their building. That mentorship makes for very good high school students and, as we have seen, very good college students.” 5

Success

Summer Internship Program The Bishop Gorman Internship Program is designed to offer students a first-hand look into a career field of interest during the summer prior to their senior year. This provides a unique opportunity for some professional experience in a particular field and insight into possible career paths.

Wellness Counselor Bishop Gorman employs a Wellness Counselor whose task it is to provide support to students who need assistance that goes beyond that offered by a guidance counselor. The Wellness Counselor assists students with issues related to stress, balance, grief, family, and other common teenage issues. Additionally, the Wellness Counselor makes referrals to professionals in the community when warranted.

Rebecca Arteaga Valedictorian Class of 2O14

“…armed with a Catholic education, we are wellprepared for the future - instilled with a strong sense of social responsibility. Our Bishop Gorman teachers have not only equipped us with the tools to succeed, but also the foresight to know which ones to use on our individual journeys as we move forward. “

College Counseling Office A full-time college counselor is available to meet with students and parents at any time during their high school career. The counselor oversees a comprehensive college planning program including on-campus college visits, financial aid/scholarship information and testing advice.

Naviance Family Connection Naviance is a web-based program designed to help students navigate every aspect of the college admission process. This program allows students to take a personality assessment and interest inventory, access a college database, research potential colleges, build a college resume, create a college list and manage their college applications.

The Learning Center The Learning Center was created to extend additional educational and support services to students who have diagnosed learning challenges and attention problems.

1:1 iPad Program In the fall of 2O14 Bishop Gorman instituted a 1:1 iPad program in partnership with Apple. “Thanks to the more than 45O volunteer hours for last year, Bishop Gorman students have played a pivotal role in making our day-to-day mission feasible.

Their youthful exuberance and hard work doing everything including serving an average of 1OOO men, women and children during the free community meal, cleaning after the meal and decorating for special events, is deeply appreciated by all of us here at Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada.”

“I love to involve myself with Three Square Food Bank’s “BackPack for Kids” program. We packed 2,16O weekend food bags on this day. Later that night as I was eating my dinner it made me feel so accomplished to know that kids in need were also eating dinner because of the food bags I packed for them.”

Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto

The Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto was dedicated in 2O12 to enhance the spiritual presence on campus. This tranquil environment, complete with contemplative music and candlelight, provides students with a space to pray and reflect in a quiet surrounding.

Retreats Students are encouraged to participate in our retreat program; Quest (for freshmen and sophomores) and Kairos (for juniors and seniors) provide an opportunity to explore one’s relationship with God, others and self.

Service A key aspect of our mission is to create a community where service is valued and celebrated. Students are required to complete 25 hours of community service annually. Many service opportunities are provided for student participation throughout the year. Last year, Bishop Gorman students performed over 38,OOO hours of service to the Las Vegas community.

Matthew 25 Our student-governed Matthew 25 board conducts a weekly on-campus collection and reviews applications from those in need requesting monetary assistance. Last year schoolwide collections totaled over $54,OOO which was distributed throughout the Las Vegas community.

Matthew’s Closet In 1996 a group of Bishop Gorman students founded Matthew’s Closet, a free clothing bank for homeless and low-income families in the Las Vegas area. Servicing the homeless directly and personally by distributing free clothing, toiletries and other useful items, the program is funded and staffed entirely by the Bishop Gorman community.

“We have several Bishop Gorman graduates on Marquette’s campus and they are high-profile, very involved students. In addition to doing well academically, the foundation of service and leadership opportunities they experienced at Bishop Gorman has carried over and continued to grow in college. Two of our college tenets are “Be the Difference” and “Change the World” and the Bishop Gorman graduates at Marquette are doing just that.”

97 State Championships in 59 Years Gaels Win NIAA Award of Excellence The Bishop Gorman Gaels won their first Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s Award of Excellence in Academics, Athletics and Citizenship Championship for the 2O13-2O14 school year. The NIAA, the non-profit, governing body of high school sports in the Silver State, began the Award program in 2OO1. Points are awarded to member schools based on their varsity teams’ performances in the classroom, at the athletic venue and in the Citizenship Through Sports program. Each of the three major categories in high school activities – academics, athletics and sportsmanship – are weighted equally, and boys and girls programs are combined in the standings table. The Award of Excellence is considered to be the top overall sports recognition award in Nevada.

Taking it to the Next Level Our NCAA liaison and counselor advises and directs all students who wish to continue participating in sports at the college level, and assists student-athletes with NCAA eligibility as well as NCAA Clearinghouse forms. In 2O13-2O14, 38 student-athletes received scholarships, 22 of those were at the Division 1 level. The athletic facilities at Bishop Gorman High School are second to none with dedicated fields for football, soccer, baseball and softball, tennis courts and track, 2 gymnasiums and wrestling room, as well as a lit synthetic turf multi-use field. The Athletic Training Center (ATC) is a state of the art two story facility that offers students, faculty and staff all the latest equipment for weight training and conditioning. The second floor provides a versatile meeting and event space which overlooks Fertitta Field.

“It is not what you do while you’re in high school that matters most, it’s who you become. Gorman gives you the tools to find the best of you… Wherever it is… wherever you have to look… find it.., not just because the world needs you to, but because it is your greatest gift from God and what you do with it is your gift back to Him.” 19
