Christian Service

By Kevin P. Kiefer, OP Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has been known to preach and teach the truths of the faith with great zeal and enthusiasm. He seems to be reaching out in ways that are bringing those home who may have been away from the faith. His love for the Gospel is evident as he works for and with the people of the world. An exemplary father figure, he desires the best for his children; he wants them to know and feel the love of Jesus Christ in a profound way. Pope Francis, in his Wednesday audience of February 19, spoke on the Sacrament of Reconciliation. He addressed several common concerns that we have about Confession. • Regarding the need to confess to a priest: “Someone can say, ‘I confess my sins only to God.’ Yes, you can say to God, ‘Forgive me,’ and say your sins. But our sins are also against our brothers, against the Church. This is why it is necessary to ask forgiveness of the Church and of our brothers, in the person of the priest.” • About those who are nervous or afraid to approach the Sacrament: “Don’t be afraid of confession...when someone is in line for confession, he feels all these things, even shame; but then, when he finishes confessing, he leaves (feeling) free, great, beautiful, forgiven, clean, happy...The sacrament of reconciliation is a sacrament of healing.”

The Muscular Dystrophy Association was thrilled to have fantastic Bishop Gorman volunteers stopping in to help! Many of our students assisted with set up and clean up, as well as directing attendees and cheering on the sponsors at the Shamrocks Against Dystrophy Kick Off in February.

• For those who have been away for a long time: “...if it has been a long time, don’t lose another day. Go, the priest will be good. And Jesus, (will be) there, and Jesus is better than the priests. Jesus receives you: He will receive you with so much love.” Pope Francis also stated that “Forgiveness is not a result of our efforts, but is a gift. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit, who showers us with mercy and grace that pours forth unceasingly from the open heart of Christ, crucified and risen.” He challenged those who heard his words with this exhortation: “Be courageous, and go to confession.” The liturgical season of Lent, which begins this year on Wednesday, March 5, is a chance for all of us to renew our relationship with the Lord. It is a time of prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and reconciliation. We are called to reconcile to the Father, but we are also called to reconcile with our brothers and sisters in Christ. It is customary for Catholic parishes to have a parish-wide opportunity for Confession at least once during Lent so that the people may approach this Sacrament of Healing. At Bishop Gorman, our students will have an opportunity to experience this spiritual healing on Friday, March 21. Our chaplain, Fr. Bill Kenny, will lead an all-school penance service, which will be followed by a chance for individual confessions with several priests from around the Diocese. We encourage our students to use this season of Lent to take an introspective look at their lives and relationships and then seek healing and forgiveness in those relationships through the Lord. Recalling the Parable of the Prodigal Son, Pope Francis reminds us: “every time we go to confession, God embraces us.” Let us seek the embrace of our Father during this Lenten season.
