Inspiring our Future
Dear Gaels, We are so excited to be celebrating the 60th anniversary of Bishop Gorman High School! This issue’s cover of the Gael Gazette shows every BGHS yearbook published over the last 59 years. These yearbooks symbolize millions of memories and over 9,000 alumni. After all of this time, Bishop Gorman still strives in the tradition of Faith, Excellence and Service in the Las Vegas community. As we enter our 60th year here at BGHS, we have pride in our past, celebrate the present and look forward to inspiring our future. In 1954, a vision came to life when Bishop Gorman High School, the first and only Catholic high school in Southern Nevada, opened the doors to the Maryland Parkway campus. The legacy of BGHS began there in that building, a legacy that gives us pride in our past. Fast forward 60 years later and here we are today, in a beautiful new building in Summerlin continuing that legacy with the same traditions that have been around since day one. While we have come a long way, the heart and soul of Bishop Gorman remains the same because at the end of the day, it’s not just a building, it’s a home, for generations and generations to come. We have a lot in store for you this year as we celebrate the present (see page 10). We especially hope to see you at the 60th Anniversary Kick-Off, September 7th and Homecoming, Friday, October 17th! Not only will we have festivities all day long for our alumni, parents and friends to participate in but also the "Bishop Gorman High School 60th Anniversary" book will officially be for sale. This is a very special time here at Bishop Gorman and we would love to see you there. With our legacy now campaign kicking off this year, we are asking you to participate as we look forward to inspiring our future. legacy now will make a difference for our students in many ways. You can contribute to the success of the campaign not only through a gift but by spreading the word to the BG community of what the campaign is all about. Participating in legacy now will provide the funds needed to support deserving students on tuition assistance, faculty and staff enrichment, and maintaining our facilities for years to come (see page 9). It’s been an exciting run for Bishop Gorman so far but we know that the best is yet to come. Here’s to 60 more! Lauren Blaney '04 Assistant Director of Advancement

State
Champs!
In the State Swimming and Diving meet, both the men’s and women’s teams qualified for the tournament, which was held at UNLV. In the Women’s State Championship, Bishop Gorman scored 130 points to win the title. The Gaels won all three relays and three individual events. Led by senior Amy Lubawy '14 (Matthew Lubawy '82), who set the state-record in the 50-yard freestyle (22.98 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (49.82). Teammates Marley Maluafiti '15 and Catie Miller '14 finished first and second in the butterfly.
The Bishop Gorman Men’s & Women’s teams both emerged victorious at the inaugural NV State Lacrosse HS Championship! The women’s varsity team, continued to dominate throughout the 2014 season finishing 15-0.The BG Women’s Varsity was victorious with a score of 15-3 over Galena. Emily Lower '15 was named the game MVP. US Lacrosse Academic All-American awards were earned by Rachel Brown '15, Dacia Persky '15, Emily Lower '15, Whitney Werksman '15 (Lisa (Blasco)Werksman '85), and Rebecca Dunne '14 for their lacrosse skills, sportsmanship and high standards of academic achievements. For the men's team, Mason Roik '15 was named MVP and Zachary Taylor '14 (Randy Taylor '80) (Delia (Andrade) Taylor '80) was awarded the prestigious US Lacrosse All American Award recognizing excellence in lacrosse play, sportsmanship and outstanding character. Kyle Smith '14 was awarded the US Lacrosse Bob Scott Award recognizing a team player who goes above and beyond in service to his team, school and community. Head coach Ian Devlin was named US Lacrosse Man of the Year by his peers in recognition of outstanding sportsmanship.
The Bishop Gorman Track & Field team brought home three individual State Championships. It was the second year in a row that the Cunninghams swept the high jump at the state tournament. Randall Cunningham '14 won his third Nevada State High Jump title with a jump of 6'11". His sister, Vashti Cunningham '16, won the girl’s high jump at '1", and was first in the long jump at 18'10 ¼".
Our Men’s Golf team headed by seniors Frank Frisbee '14 and Bryce McEachern '14 (Christi (Thomas) McEachern '86), took honors by shooting the low two-day round of 148. They were joined by Blake Taylor '17, Christian James '16, and Owen Rosebeck '16, all of whom shot in the low 70s. Lastly, it was junior Anthony Lalli’s (Chris Lalli '85) score which allowed the Gaels to soundly defeat Palo Verde with team totals of 373 and 368. Yet, without the competitive support of their teammates Vince Gargano '15, Tyler Martinez '15, Dominic Grisingher '15, and Skylar Davidson ’16, those six starters wouldn’t have achieved their under-eighty scores. After their win, Frank Frisbee '14 commented, “Golf is tough because it’s the one sport where you cannot communicate with your teammates. You’re matched against three kids from three separate schools, and you don’t know if your score is needed to win, or if it’s the one that can be dropped. That makes every shot count!” The Gael Gazette

“I am happy that we have been able to do so much to support Bishop Gorman High School over the years. With the matching gift component of legacy now I hope our community will take the opportunity to contribute to this important cause. The entertainment continued through the evening thanks to Missy Cochran Entertainment (Missy Cochran '86) with a DJ, sax and bass player combo while attendees sipped on all the best that Wirtz Beverage had to offer. BGHS art students, Chandler Oseland ’14 (Irene (Messologitis) Oseland '87), Zach Telles ’14 (Katherine (Etter) Telles '83 (Vince Telles '82), Kaitlyn Wallace ’15 (Heather (Marnell) Wallace '90) (Chad Wallace '90) & Jamie Blaase ’14, helped take us to the streets of France, as they painted postcards for our guests in true French fashion - wearing striped shirts and berets! Along with the eighteen wines, five beers and two specialty cocktails there was a wide variety of French-inspired bites to enjoy! Over 80 amazing auction items were bid on throughout the week and at the event with our “textin” silent auction raising money for our Tuition Assistance Program.

his year’s Annual Wine Tasting event, Passport, took Bishop Gorman families, alumni & friends to the French Riviera! The event was held at the Red Rock Resort poolside, where guests enjoyed delicious drinks, tasty food, great entertainment and of course, some delicious wines! The night began with a performance by some of our very own students, Jared De Joya ’14, Jason De Joya ’16, Matthew Bautista ’14, Ralph Mendez ’14 and Marie Owyong ’16.
