BGHS Students Win International Writing Contest

ongratulations to the Bishop Gorman students who received Scholastic Art and Writing Awards medals on January 30 at the Springs Preserve. Rianna Dizon ’16 and Aidan Kennelley ’16 were asked to read their pieces aloud in a living history exhibit. When asked how that felt, they both responded, “honored” and “blessed.” Six Gold Key winners with multiple entries will move on to the Nationals this spring in New York City. All await to see if they join our past alumni winners at Carnegie Hall this May.
The following artists won Honorable Mention: Jessica Pelka ’16 for her memoir “Lost Yet Found;” Karli Berry ’16 for her memoir “Fearless Forgiveness Defeats Withering Wrath;” Danica De Jesus ’16 for her memoir “The Melody of Medicine;” Mya Ellis ’16 for her poem “Making Cream;” Stephanie Gaydosh ’16 for her flash fiction “What Is Eternity?” Aidan Kennelley for his poems “Plain Divisions,” “Dangerous,” “All for Nothing,” and “Exist.”

Eight pieces were awarded Silver Keys which denote advanced artistry in writing. The award winners, categories, and titles are: Mackenzie Sullivan ’16 for her critical essay “Stem Cell Research: The Future of Medicine;” Haley Coleman ’16 for her memoir “What Stuck;” Cole (Ian) Griffin ’16 for his memoir “Adulthood;” Michelle Kim ’16 for her memoir “Serving for Success;” Patrick Daez ’16 for his memoir “Open Doors;” Catherine Dubé ’16 for her memoir “Seeing Things Differently;” Brett McEachern ’19 for his memoir “I Score By Striking Out;” Zachary Zeller ’16 for his memoir “Launching Missiles at Poverty.”

grader from St. Anne on winning the 2016 Marietta Tiberti Memorial Catholic Schools Spelling Bee on Tuesday, January 26th. Her prize? A full-tuition scholarship for her freshman year at Bishop Gorman High School. th
In its 28th year, the Marietta Tiberti Memorial C a t h o l i c Schools Spelling Bee included eight competitors—two each from grades five through eight—from each Catholic elementary school in the Valley. The Tiberti family, longtime Bishop Gorman Community members and supporters, graciously fund the scholarship for each year’s winner in memory of Mrs. Marietta Tiberti. 1st Place: Alyssa Mangio, 7th Grade, St. Anne. Runner Up: Christian Nunez, 8th Grade, St. Viator. 3rd Place: Maia Marshall, 7th Grade, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

In February, the team competed among 700 other entries and placed in four categories: Isabella Riezler and Chris Catechis, 1st Place in Duo Interpretation. Chris Catechis ’17, 2nd Place in JV Congressional Debate. Noah Lea ’17 and Alex Schunk ’16, 3rd Place Varsity Public Forum Debate. Isabella Riezler Finalist in Impromptu Speaking.
