Men’s Basketball Wins State The winter sports season came to a close with a 7th straight Men’s Basketball State Championship. The Gaels finished the year on a tear, winning their last 13 games. During the season, the team won the prestigious Tarkanian Classic Tournament in December, the Sunset Southwest League, and the Sunset Regional Tournament with a 57-46 win over Clark High School. It was the Gaels 4th win of the season over rival, Clark. In the State Tournament, the team took the long bus ride to Reno and did not disappoint. In the Semi-Finals, the Gaels outlasted a pesky Spanish Springs team 7568 before beating Bishop Manogue in the Final, 62-41. Overall, it was Bishop Gorman’s 20th Men’s Basketball State Championship, a Nevada record. The team also gained national respect and is ranked in the Top 25 in the country in every poll. The Gaels were led all year by senior Jamal Bey. The University of Washington signee averaged 22 points and 8 rebounds and was named the Sunset Division MVP, as well as the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year. Athletics continues on page 6

Submit your application, pay the required fee online and send them the necessary documents. Please be aware that your application must be verified by FACTS before your application can be reviewed by the Tuition Assistance Committee. Congratulations to Mateo Portelli ’20, Nevada State Champion in Congressional Debate. Mateo also was a finalist in the Original Oratory category. In April the team will compete in the national qualifying tournaments for a chance to qualify for the National Tournament in Ft. Lauderdale in June. Way to go GAELS and best of luck!

Environmental Science T

hank you to Dr. Michael Pravica for taking time out of his busy schedule to be a guest speaker for the Environtmental Science students at BGHS on March 6. Dr. Michael Pravica, Professor of Physics and Faculty Senator at UNLV, is a Harvard graduate and spoke to the students about climate change. Among other topics, Dr. Pravica has written about climate change “Average temperatures have been consistently rising. The vast majority of scientists see the writing on the wall, and they are sounding the alarm that humans must prepare for serious consequences to this dramatic environmental change. They agree that we need to develop strategies for reducing the everincreasing concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide before we achieve a point of no return, where the effects of warming on the atmosphere will be irreversible.” the Environmental Science students thank Dr. Pravica for sharing his expertise.

In February, the Bishop Gorman Model UN Team took 1st Place in their division. Congratulations to all participants: Morgan Ebbers ’19, Alyssa Gnoyski ’19, Rylee Tan ’19, Hayden Aguon ’20, Joseph Candela ’20, Nguyen Vo ’20, Natalie Atamian ’21, Nicole Needham ’21, Mariane Pedrosa ’21.

Congratulations to Natalie Gilbert ’20 who won the Rotary Club Speech Contest in February. She now moves on to the next level of competition for a college scholarship. The contest theme is “making a difference”, applying the rotary’s four way test.

Great work!!

Frosh Football Helps Out at Miracle League

TWICE AS NICE!

Freshman parent, Jeff Kondra, and his team of freshmen football players spent time preparing the fields for opening day at Miracle League on March 24. The boys have totally jumped on the service program under the guidance of Mr. Kondra and by the end of their freshman year, they will have a total of over 1500 service hours completed as a group! Additionally, they had a sock drive to benefit Matthew’s Closet, our Gorman sponsored free clothing bank. The boys donated 144 pairs of socks! We are super proud of our young men who are learning to serve their first year at Bishop Gorman and beyond thankful for parents like Jeff Kondra who are willing to lead them! Go GAELS!

Once again, the Bishop Gorman family comes through to provide hundreds and hundreds of dresses, suits, shoes, jewelry, and handbags to other local teens who cannot purchase these kinds of items for formal events they are hoping to attend. Students Brittany Remark ’18, Sara DiFederico ’18, and Sam DiFederico ’18, were the driving force behind this year’s Twice As Nice, and they are handing the baton to younger students who will take the lead next year! This program helps so many with the formal clothing our students no longer need, so everyone wins! All donations were given to Project 150 for their upcoming Prom Closet program that allows other teens to choose what they might like for any upcoming formal events that they would like to attend; at no cost to them.

National Philanthropy Summit On February 9th Christopher Goode ’20, second from left, was a presenter at the National Philanthropy Summit held at City Hall. Christopher spoke about the Bishop Gorman Mite Box program and the Matthew 25 Board to over 300 participants learning about different options for philanthropy in Las Vegas. Also in attendance were Christopher’s grandmother, Joyce Showers, as well as his parents, Shadra and Tracy Goode.

Our Wednesday Three Square group of volunteers get tons of work done every single time they are there! Great job!

SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE Bishop Gorman students provide a minimum of 38,000 hours of Christian Service to the Las Vegas community every single year! On occasion, we witness some real “standouts” when it comes to serving others; this is our opportunity to feature them and to thank them for their service. This month, our spotlight is on Liberty Perez ’21. Liberty is a freshman who came in like a little tornado! She has completed 164 hours of Christian Service already, and will not be slowing down anytime soon. We are tremendously proud of Liberty and thankful to have someone so very committed to serving the needy of Las Vegas!

Liberty Perez ’21

Liberty Perez ’21, is one busy young lady! She regularly volunteers for Straight From the Streets, Atria Sunlake, and Nathan Adelson Hospice. Straight From the Steets is a homeless advocacy program that provides the homeless population of Las Vegas with toiletries, clothing, and blankets. At Atria Sunlake, Liberty assists the seniors living there in a variety of ways. She feels an attachment to Atria because her grandmother lived at a similar facility for a number of years. Volunteering at Nathan Adelson Hospice was a very personal choice as Liberty’s grandmother spent her last days there suffering with Dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Liberty has found a lot of joy working at all three locations and each one has meant something special and unique to her. “Volunteering is important to me because it is a way to give back and help those in need. Through volunteering, I feel as if I make a positive impact on the people I meet and those who see what a person volunteering does and in turn, they volunteer themselves.” We are very proud of Liberty and thank her for all she does for the Las Vegas community.

Counselor’s Corner SUMMER CAMPS AND LEADERSHIP CONFERENCES

AP TESTING

Many students have recently received letters in the mail which are very flattering and indicate they were nominated and/or selected to participate in a national program focused on medicine, science, law, business, politics or current events. While Bishop Gorman students have attended a variety of these programs in the past, and have enjoyed them, they can be quite expensive and do not necessarily increase your chance for admission to the college or university of your choice. Please research these programs and weigh the cost/benefit analysis prior to committing.

AP Exams will be administered during the first two full weeks of May. You have been preparing for these exams all year and we want you to do your best. - AP Exams matter! The counseling office was recently contacted by the admission office, at a very selective university, inquiring about a student’s AP score from their junior year. Some colleges may be using your AP scores as a component in their admissions decision process.

AP EXAM SCHEDULE

SENIORS

- College Acceptance and Naviance With college decisions afoot, we would like to encourage the senior class to update their admissions decisions on Naviance. Whether your admissions decisions were favorable or not, this data allows us to provide accurate and timely information to future students going through the college application process. Your cooperation is appreciated. - Set Attending College In order to receive your graduation ticket for your cap and gown, seniors must identify the college they are attending in Naviance. If you need assistance in completing this task, please see your counselor. - Scholarship Information Colleges may include scholarship awards in their award letters or under separate cover. When you receive a scholarship award, please give a copy of your scholarship letter to Mrs. Conteduca or Mr. McAllister. The deadline for submissions is April 27. Scholarship information is listed in the graduation program and we want to ensure you are recognized for the scholarships you received. You do not have to attend the school offering the scholarship in order for the information to appear in the graduation program. We include college related scholarship awards as well as outside scholarship information, so please turn in a copy of everything you receive.
