5 th State Title in a row The winter sports season has come to a close. Our teams all experienced a great deal of success, bringing home individual awards, national rankings, league and regional titles, an individual State Wrestling Championship, and a Nevada record setting 5th Straight State Title in Men’s Basketball.

The men’s basketball team finished the season strong by capturing the State Championship title in Reno, NV. In the State Tournament, the Gaels had big wins over Reno High School in the semi-finals and Coronado High School in the finals. It was the 5th State Championship in a row for the team and the 7th in the last 8 years. This was the 18th State Championship for the men’s basketball team at Bishop Gorman, breaking the all-time Nevada Record. Several individuals received awards during the year. Jamal Bey ’18, Byron Frohnen ’16, Ryan Kiley ’17, and Travis Rice ’16 were all named to the Sunset Southwest All-League team. Chuck O’Bannon ’17, Christian Popoola ’17, and Zach Collins ’16 were all named to the Sunset Division 1st Team. P

art of the mission statement for Bishop Gorman contains the words “create a community where service is valued and celebrated.” This year the Class of 2018 instituted Sophomore Saturdays. The main goal was to provide sophomores who don’t drive with the opportunity for service hours with their Dean and other responsible adults acting as chaperones. It helped to create a bond, as well as a safe environment for service. A large number of service opportunities involved working with the Salvation Army serving the community meals twice a month. Many students repeated their service every other week and I hope they continue over the summer as there is a great need for help serving food to the homeless. Additionally, our students worked on Coats for Kids and the Christmas Toy Giveaway. For this event, students acted as personal shoppers and shopped with parents for their children. Many of our students wore Santa hats and embraced the long hours restocking and shopping. Activities with the Salvation Army also included taking inventory of donations, as well as unloading boxes of food from vehicles arriving from their food drives.

Please be aware that transcripts and grades cannot be released until your student’s account is current. If you have any questions regarding your student’s account, please contact Vanessa Orozco at 702.476.4023.

TUITION ASSISTANCE

You can still apply for tuition assistance for the 2016-2017 school year by visiting our website, www.bishopgorman.org, where there is a link to Smart Aid under the Admissions tab. Submit your application, pay the required fee online and send them the necessary documents. Please be aware that your application must be verified by Smart Aid before your application can be reviewed by the Tuition Assistance Committee. Returning families must re-apply for tuition assistance each year.

Besides working with the Salvation Army, Sophomore Saturdays also included work with the Alzheimer’s Walk, the Douglas J Green Memorial Foundation, and Best Buddies. Our final project for the year will be working with Three Square, sorting canned goods.

S

ervice hours are required for all students in order to graduate. The Class of 2016 needed to turn in their 100 hours already in order to participate in any senior activities, including Prom and the Senior Trip to Disneyland. The Class of 2017 should have 75 hours and the Class of 2018 needs 50 verified hours by the return to school in August. Please note that parking spaces on campus will be assigned first to those students who are current with their service hour requirement. It is our hope, through their experiences at Bishop Gorman, that service to others will become an important part of the lives of every student.

Mr. Barbara is back in 3, 2, 1 Since late December, the BGTV Studios looked a little different at Bishop Gorman. Our Broadcasting teacher, Mr. Joe Barbara, has been on hiatus working on a special project for his other career. Mr. Barbara, who stars nightly in the Tony Award–winning musical Jersey Boys, was on the East Coast appearing in the world premiere of A Bronx Tale: The Musical, at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ. This brand new project is based on the 1993 movie A Bronx Tale, starring Robert De Niro and Chazz Palminteri who co-directed and served as producer for the musical respectively. The musical played to sold-out audiences for 4 ½ weeks and received glowing reviews, even from the New York Times. With such a star-studded creative team, Mr. Barbara said he was honored to be asked to be a part of the production. “It was an incredibly fulfilling experience.”
