6 th State Title in a row The winter sports season came to a close in dramatic fashion with a 6th straight Men’s Basketball State Championship. The Gaels finished the year with a come-from-behind win over Clark High School in front of a sold-out crowd at the Cox Pavilion. It was the second time in a week that the team faced its new rival and 3-time Division 1A State Champion. In the Sunset Finals the previous week, the Gaels beat Clark to capture their 9th straight Sunset Division Title.

In a closely contested State Championship game, Clark pulled ahead by 8 points in the last two minutes of the game. With most in attendance thinking Clark had won the game, the Gaels made a furious comeback in the last minute and a half. Christian Popoola ’17 led the comeback with 6 points and 3 steals, Chuck O’Bannon ’17 had a big dunk to take the lead for good, DJ Howe ’18 had 2 steals, 2 big rebounds and made 3 free throws to ice the win and the Championship. O’Bannon put on an MVP performance and showed why he is a McDonald’s All American with 36 points and 11 rebounds. Several players on the men’s team received individual awards as well. Chuck O’Bannon (MVP), Jamal Bey ’18, and Christian Popoola were named to the Sunset Division 1st Team, and Ryan Kiley ’17 and Saxton Howard ’18 were named to the Sunset Southwest All-League Team. Diocese of Las Vegas

Administration

Dear Gaels: After a process of data collection, study, reflection, and discernment, Bishop Gorman has selected three major goals upon which to focus as a result of the WCEA Accreditation Self-Study Process. They are: 1. Establish a research-based, consistent evaluative process for administrators, faculty, and staff, with the purpose of providing clear performance expectations, mentorship, and opportunities for continuous growth and improvement. 2. Intentionally develop additional opportunities to expose all students in more and diverse ways to the distinctive ethos and culture reflected in the Church’s understanding of the Catholic school experience. 3. Within the College Prep academic track, cultivate and improve student content mastery in core content areas, formalizing a challenging college-preparatory curriculum. We thank everyone who participated in the surveys and data collection phase, as well as those who helped with the discernment process. We will be updating the community on our progress as we work through the action steps associated with each goal.

pring has arrived! We are looking forward to many upcoming school events, especially Prom. This year, Prom will be held on Saturday, April 1 at Red Rock Casino. There is also the ACT and the SAT to look forward to taking. In order for the juniors to attend Prom they must be current with their service hours. Juniors this year have worked many hours at Salvation Army, Three Square, visiting the sick and elderly, as well as volunteering at many youth activities. The theme for this year was “What Will Juniors Do?” and many WWJD bracelets have been given away for hours completed. There are a large number of students who have completed all 100 hours for graduation already! The summer following junior year is a great time to visit colleges that your student may be interested in attending. You may have begun to receive mail from colleges, but visiting a campus is the best way to get the feel for the school and can make all the difference in choosing a college. Go prepared to these visits with questions and concerns and make the most of your college visit. These are exciting times for all involved. I look forward to moving forward into senior year with your students. Please feel free to contact me at any time with any concerns. I hope everyone had a safe Prom weekend and good luck on the ACT.

Irene Anderson Dean Class of 2018

In February, Sister Margaret Joseph and Sister Paulina of the Dominicans of St. Cecilia from Nashville, Tennessee spoke to the students about religious life, vocation, and the call to holiness. Each Theology class had the opportunity for a direct encounter with the two women who have dedicated their lives to loving and serving Christ in the vocation of Religious life. In a survey given to the students after the presentation, most students stated that the Q & A session was their favorite part. The questions the students asked involved the habits the sisters wear, the history of their Religious order, a typical day in the life of a Dominican Sister and ultimately, the reasons behind their love and devotion to God. Angelia Fertitta ’19, in an interview about her experience of the presentation, stated “I think it makes [my faith] stronger to see how these women are so faithful to God.” Many students articulated a desire to have future opportunities for recreation or small group dialogue with the Sisters on a subsequent visit. The Theology Department hopes this visit was the first of many and that we will make a habit of inviting Religious Brothers and Sisters to our school.

ACT TEST INFORMATION

Many students have recently received letters in the mail which are very flattering and indicate they were nominated and/or selected to participate in a national program focused on medicine, science, law, business, politics or current events. While Bishop Gorman students have attended a variety of these programs in the past, and have enjoyed them, they can be quite expensive and do not necessarily increase your chance for admission to the college or university of your choice. Please research these programs and weigh the cost/benefit analysis prior to committing.

Bishop Gorman is administering the ACT Test to all juniors on Wednesday, April 19. The test is free of charge and your child will be automatically registered. No action is needed on the part of you or your child.

IMPORTANT!

ONLY APPROVED CALCULATORS ARE ALLOWED FOR THE ACT TEST The ACT Calculator Policy is designed to ensure fairness for all examinees and to protect the security of the test materials. The full ACT Calculator Policy can be found at

SENIORS

- College Acceptance and Naviance With college decisions afoot, we would like to encourage the senior class to update their admissions decisions on Naviance. Whether your admissions decisions were favorable or not, this data allows us to provide accurate and timely information to future students going through the college application process. Your cooperation is appreciated. - Set Attending College In order to receive your graduation ticket for your cap and gown, seniors must identify the college they are attending in Naviance. If you need assistance in completing this task, please see your counselor. - Scholarship Information Colleges may include scholarship awards in their award letters or under separate cover. When you receive a scholarship award, please give a copy of your scholarship letter to Ms. Ivie or Mr. McAllister. The deadline for submissions is April 28. Scholarship information is listed in the graduation program and we want to ensure you are recognized for the scholarships you received. You do not have to attend the school offering the scholarship in order for the information to appear in the graduation program. We include college related scholarship awards, as well as outside scholarship information, so please turn in a copy of everything you receive.

WWW.ACT.ORG Many Bishop Gorman students use the TI N-Spire CX CAS calculator. This calculator is NOT ALLOWED on the ACT and would not be allowed at any testing facility nationwide. Bishop Gorman proctors will not allow the use of this calculator. (This calculator is, however, approved for use on the SAT).

AP TESTING

AP Exams will be administered during the first two weeks in May. - AP Exams matter! The Counseling Office was recently contacted by the Admissions Office at a very selective university, inquiring about a student’s AP score from their junior year. Some colleges may be using your AP scores as a component in their admissions decision process.

REGISTRATION

Course registration for the 2017-2018 school year is ongoing. Parents, please remember to submit your signed enrollment agreement as well as your tuition agreement to the Finance Office if you have not done so already. If you are in need of a registration packet, please contact the Finance Office. In preparation for your child’s registration appointment, we encourage parents and students to discuss their course selection in advance. Each student will have a scheduled appointment, with their school counselor, to discuss their course selection and select the most appropriate courses.

SUMMER ENRICHMENT 2017

Summer Enrichment plays a large part in the academic plan for many Bishop Gorman students. Please visit www.bishopgorman.org and click the Summer Enrichment link under the Academics tab for class offerings, session dates and online registration. Summer Enrichment course requests will be accepted only after 2017-2018 registration packets are received and students have met with their school counselor.
