Legacy Now - Bishop Gorman High School

Page 1

Bishop Gorman High School, established in 1954, has a rich tradition of Faith, Excellence and Service to the Las Vegas community. In 2001, the Bishop Gorman community made a strong commitment to that tradition by launching the Ensuring the Legacy campaign to build its new campus in Summerlin. The new campus, completed in 2007, is a beacon of the Catholic Faith in Las Vegas. It is a place where students prepare for their future education and life experiences while developing their own personal encounter with Christ and his teachings.

The new facility offers our current students a superior learning environment while preserving the history and tradition of Bishop Gorman High School’s excellence in Catholic education. Our latest addition, completed in the Spring of 2013, provides even more opportunities to enhance the educational experience of our current students and accommodate additional students. With the expansion complete it is time, once again, for the Bishop Gorman community to demonstrate its support of Catholic education in Las Vegas. Today Bishop Gorman sits on 52 acres and provides a complete educational experience. We are blessed to have had the support of generous benefactors that have made our amazing facilities a reality. Aside from the traditional classroom, our campus features college style lecture halls, a black box theatre, state-of-the-art science labs, TV studio and learning center to meet the needs of our students, faculty and staff on every level.

Recent additions to our campus include the Fertitta Athletic Training Center (ATC), Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto and the “north expansion.

The ATC is a state-of-the-art sports conditioning facility for our athletes, as well as a supervised fitness center for the use of all students and faculty. On the second floor is a reception center, Ryan Hall, for banquets and meetings.

The Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto enhances the spiritual life on campus by providing a special place for our students and faculty to pause, reflect and pray in the presence of our Blessed Mother, with glowing candles and contemplative music.

In the future, the final phase of our expansion will include elements that will help continue our reputation of excellence in education, taking our campus to the next level with a student union, an additional auxiliary gym, an aquatic center and administration offices. The construction of these projects will be completed as funds are secured for each individual building.

Tuition Assistance The mission of Bishop Gorman High School is to educate the entire person and to provide an environment where students can develop spiritually, intellectually and socially, enabling them to recognize their potential as people of God.

As the only Catholic high school in Las Vegas, Bishop Gorman must provide a Catholic education to as many students as possible regardless of their family’s financial circumstance. Obviously, our ability to do this is limited by our financial resources.

Currently, our tuition assistance needs are two-fold. In today’s economic environment, we have an immediate need to increase the financial assistance we provide to our current and incoming students. Then we have a long-term goal of increasing the amount of tuition assistance available in future years.

In order to satisfy both of these pressing needs, $2 million of the $7 million legacy now designated for Tuition Assistance will provide the ability to increase the amount of tuition assistance granted by 50% over the next four years. The remaining $5 million will be invested in our tuition assistance fund, the earnings of which will be utilized to increase tuition assistance in subsequent years. Legacy Now

Faculty & Staff Enrichment The ultimate determining factor in the quality of a student’s education lies in the professional preparation and ongoing formation of the faculty and staff. Teachers at Bishop Gorman are expected to function as members of a professional learning community, keeping current on best practices and research-based strategies involving curriculum, instruction and assessment.

In addition, our teachers must be well versed in technology and 21st Century skills in order to prepare our students for the digital environment they will experience in college. The $1 million from legacy now designated to faculty and staff enrichment will allow us to provide the continuing education and resources necessary to ensure that our faculty and staff are leaders in their profession.

Capital Replacements As difficult as it is to believe, we have been on our Summerlin campus for seven years now. Our students are proud of their school and show a great deal of respect when it comes to the physical appearance of our campus. Additionally, our facilities and maintenance teams work very hard to make sure that our campus looks as good today as it did the day we moved in.

The next step in keeping up our beautiful facility is to stay up to date with our capital repairs and replacements. Currently, funding for major repairs and to update facilities comes from our operating budget. We have developed a five year plan to replace and update various components of our facilities due to regular wear and tear. Two million dollars from the legacy now campaign will give us the ability to fund these projects without having to draw from our operating funds.
