In Honor Of Our Veterans This year we honored eight Bishop Gorman staff members who are Veterans in an assembly held on Friday, November 8th. We paid tribute to them through readings, songs and a special Flag Folding Ceremony performed by the Nellis Air Force Base Honor Guard. In addition, Colonel Kelsey McCall (BGHS Math teacher and Dean) spoke to our student body about his experiences while in the service. We also had a special guest, Naval Captain Doc Lorens, a veteran of WWII. We thank him, as well as all of our Veterans for their service to our country.

Combined Honor Society Induction

Memos from the Finance Department:

On October 23, approximately 700 students, families, and friends gathered in the Tiberti Commons to honor some of Bishop Gorman’s top students for their academic performance. The Fall Combined Honor Society Induction featured an invocation by the school president, Mr. John Kilduff, and remarks by Principal Kevin Kiefer that praised and encouraged the students for their great success. Christopher Shea, National Honor Society President, was Master of Ceremonies and the student leaders of the several honor societies introduced their organizations and explained the requirements for membership in each. More than 200 outstanding students were inducted into one or more of the honor societies. The honor societies represented were:

Finance Office Holiday Hours The Finance Department will be closed December 23, 2013 through January 1, 2014. Our hours will be 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on January 2-3, 2014. Normal hours will begin on January 6, 2014.

Financial Aid Open enrollment for financial aid for the 2014-2015 school year is currently open. Visit www.bishopgorman.org where there is a link to Facts Grant and Aid under the Admissions tab. Submit your application and pay the required fee online.

The deadline to apply for financial aid is February 28, 2014.

Please be aware that you must be VERIFIED by FACTS Tuition Aid for your application to be reviewed by the Tuition Assistance Committee. Incoming Freshmen that have been verified and reviewed will receive notification award mid-March.

Current 8th grade students interested in applying to Bishop Gorman High School for the 2014–2015 school year are invited to take the placement exam on:

Students were congratulated on their accomplishments and the honor this brings to themselves, the school and their families. Membership in these prestigious organizations presents additional opportunities for service to the school and the community. In addition, these students are outstanding students, people of character, and emerging leaders. The newly expanded Tiberti Commons provided the perfect site for this event. The next induction ceremony will be in the spring semester and will feature new members of the Academic Society, the French Honor Society, and the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Saturday, December 14th or Saturday, January 11th at 8:00am Prospective students that take the placement exam on either date are included in the first pool of applicants considered for admission. Additionally, the exam results will help determine a student’s placement in freshman year classes.

The test given is the High School Placement Test (HSPT) by Scholastic Testing Services (STS). The exam will cover verbal and quantitative skills, reading, mathematics, and language.

Lasting Memories

The Memory Project is a unique initiative in which art students create portraits for children and teens around the world who have been neglected, orphaned, or disadvantaged. Given that kids in such situations tend to have few personal keepsakes, this program aims to provide them with special memories that capture a piece of their childhood. Students and teachers at Bishop Gorman are currently hard at work completing portraits for the Memory Project.

A total of 40 of our student artists are creating drawings, paintings, and digital portraits of children in Cambodia to send to them for the New Year. These portraits will serve as keepsakes for the children and reinforce a sense of heritage.

Mrs. Feely and the Visual Arts Department are grateful for the opportunity to touch the lives of others through the gift of art!

On November 13th, nearly 1,000 Las Vegas high school students gathered at the 57th annual Sun Youth Forum to discuss hot-button issues such as abortion, gay marriage and gun control. Founded in 1955, the Sun Youth Forum gives local teenagers an opportunity to share their opinions with their peers and community leaders. Although 28 moderators were present, the students directed their own discussions. They debated one another, thoughtful ideas were presented and then countered with rebuttals that were cordial and onpoint. We congratulate the following students who participated in this year’s Sun Youth Forum:

BGHS Walks The Walk at Alzheimer’s Walk On Saturday, October 26, 2013, over 300 Bishop Gorman students, faculty, staff, family and friends “Walked the Walk” to End Alzheimer’s at the Fashion Show Mall. Team BGHS Walks the Walk has become a Bishop Gorman tradition in the past nine years where the school community unites in a movement to reclaim the future for millions.

This year, the BGHS community walked in honor of Jesse Foy, the mother of Margaret Foy, a longtime Bishop Gorman faculty member and team co-captain.

Mrs. Foy, who had participated in the walk each year, suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and passed away in February.

Academics

Counselor’s Corner PSAT results will be distributed in December to the juniors and sophomores through their English classes. The counselors will explain to the students how to interpret their results at that time. Students receive their original test booklets with their scores.

Parents and students should use this as a valuable learning tool and take the time to go over the problems and the answers. We encourage juniors to take the SAT and the ACT in the spring.

January 15, 16 & 17 Here are the Top Ten Study Tips!

1. Find a study space that works for you.

• Do you prefer to study in silence or listen to music?

• Do you work better alone or with other people?

• Do you like to study at home, school, or the library?

2. Be Organized: Have all materials you need in your study space before you start studying.

3. Clear your mind and focus all your thoughts on your work.

Keep paper next to you in case you need to write something down.

4. Get motivated: Think about the end result if you do well in your studies. Stay motivated!

5. Plan and use your time well to make the most of your study time. Use a calendar to keep track of exam dates. Space out your study time each week for the whole term/semester - don’t try to cram it all in the night before!

Complete each study guide that is provided and attend study sessions during GAELS period or after school. Set yourself a time limit for each task and follow it.

6. Know your learning style and study in the ways you learn best: • Auditory: Try reading your notes aloud and discussing them with other people, or record key points and play them back.

• Visual: Use colors in your notes, draw diagrams to help represent key points or remember ideas as images.

• Tactile: Use methods like role-playing or building models to revise key points.

7. Taking detailed notes in class will save you time later. Re-writing and adding to your notes is a great way to review what you’ve learned!

8. Make your own study materials. Create practice exam questions or flash cards to help you study.

9. Test yourself: Ask friends or family to quiz you on key concepts or offer to help other students with their work. It’s a great way to get confident with what you do know and find out what you still need to learn!

10. Take time out: You’ll study better when you’re feeling good.

Eat well, get enough sleep and exercise too! Schedule regular breaks and keep hydrated.

Help us welcome Mrs. Abigail Brown-Jones, a graduate of Bishop Gorman High School Class of ’96, who joined our Counseling Department this September as our Wellness Counselor.

Mrs. Brown-Jones is a Nevada licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and comes to BGHS from Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health and from her private practice. Mrs. Brown-Jones attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree of Science in Marriage and Family Counseling. She has extensive experience working with adolescents and young adults within the community and has presented several workshops and educational instruction to mental health professionals.

Art & Photo!

Bonjour Chef Andre’ On the morning of November 1st, French teacher Mr. Marcoux had a surprise for the French 4 Honors class. He invited Chef André Rochat from the famous Andre’s French Restaurant, to speak to the class and join their monthly Café Français get-together.

The Photography 3 class worked with the AP Art Studio class to create some unique portraits for use in their concentration. Portraits of each student were taken in the Black Box Theater and then edited in Photoshop by the Photography 3 class to highlight each artist’s discipline.

It was a treat for the class to get to know Chef André personally.

He spoke about being a Chef and how he became interested in cooking while assisting his dad in the family butcher shop in Eastern France.

The visit also included a Q&A with Chef André and conversations in French. At the end of the class everyone moved to the Tiberti Commons where they shared in a selection of delicious French breakfast pastries, compliment of Chef André!

November 13th was a success! Photography teacher Mr. Cava had a great turnout for this field trip and fun was had by all.

The Moon, Venus and a small sliver of our Milky Way galaxy were visible for students to photograph!
