Gaels vs. Findlay Prep

The BGHS Women’s Soccer Team had the best year in school history. Not only were they undefeated at 27-0-1, but they finished the season with a State Championship and a #6 national ranking. This Bishop Gorman team becomes the highest ranked Nevada team in the 20-year Fab 50 history! The Gaels won the Desert Region Tournament in dramatic fashion with a penalty kick victory over Coronado. Goalie Kirsten Kircher '19 was the star of the game, shutting down the Coronado free kicks. In the new City Championship game, Bishop Gorman beat Faith Lutheran 3-2 to set up the pairings in the State Tournament. Gianna Gourley '19 scored two goals in the game to lead the team. In the State Semifinals, the Gaels built an early 3-0 lead over Palo Verde on goals

Last year, the BGHS Women’s Volleyball Team lost a heart breaker to Shadow Ridge in five sets at the State Finals. This year, under new Head Coach, Gregg Nunley, the Lady Gaels would have none of that with a dominate run through the state of Nevada. “Earn it” was their motto all year, and they did just that, going 39-4, winning the Nevada State Championship, and a national ranking by Max Preps. This will go down as the best Volleyball team in Bishop Gorman history. The team didn’t lose a set to a Nevada opponent all season, and cruised through the Desert Region playoffs with 3-0 victories over Silverado, Liberty, and Coronado. In the Las Vegas City Championship match, the Gaels handled Palo Verde 3-0 as well to earn the #1 seed at the State Tournament in Reno.

Marching Toward A Win!

In late July, members of the Bishop Gorman Marching Band convened in their band room for a briefing on what would ultimately be one of the most grueling competitive seasons the program has ever faced. Two and a half weeks of pre-season training in the scorching heat were well underway as the campus was quietly awaiting its first day of classes. Little by little, each student refined their skills as they were scrutinized, pushed, and expected to put forth nothing less than 100% effort at all times. Over the next four months, the ensemble continued to build and refine their product every morning on Fertitta Field. That product was a competitive field production affectionately titled Company 54—a nod to the founding year of Bishop Gorman—containing subject matter of war, heroes, sacrifice, and perseverance relative to the Centennial of World War 1.

Alzheimer's Walk

Speech & Debate

Team “BGHS Walks the Walk” was more than 365-members strong at this year’s Las Vegas Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Town Square on October 27th. BGHS orange and blue could be seen everywhere as students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators, and family and friends came together to raise funds and community awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease, care, support, and research. In addition to participating in the walk, team BGHS donated more than $4,100 to the Alzheimer’s Association, Desert Southwest Chapter. That is about two percent of the total funds raised for this year’s Walk in southern Nevada, including corporate donations. “That’s pretty impressive and very generous,” commented Ms. Foy. This is the 14th year of Team BGHS’s participation in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, originally called the Memory Walk. The first Team BGHS consisted of about 15 members. continued page 11

Congratulations to the Speech and Debate team that competed early in November. ALS/Lou Gehrig's Disease Walk Bishop Gorman had a great representation at the annual ALS Walk in Las Vegas the weekend of November 3rd. Ava Foster '19, and Andrew Garcia '19, took the lead on organizing our own team for the event. They spent several weeks signing up interested students and staff for the event, and were able to help raise an amazing $743.25 to help with research to help fight this horrible disease. Additionally, funds raised will help with medical transportation of patients, support groups, special equipment, and education about the disease. We are really proud of our participation and, particularly, the leadership that Ava and Andrew have shown! Congrats on a fine job!

Miracle Minute: Hurricane Michael

When natural disasters happen in our country and in our world, Bishop Gorman tries to consistently respond with help. On October 23rd, we chose to have a Miracle Minute, rather than our typical Mite Box Tuesday collection, in order to raise funds to help those who are struggling after the damage of Hurricane Michael hit their homes. We raised over $3,000 that was sent directly to Catholic Charities of Northwest Florida to assist in the recovery efforts. One hundred percent of our donation will be used to support disaster relief and recovery efforts. Seven days a week, Catholic Charities is distributing food, water and essential basic supplies. Our donation is sure to go a long way in providing assistance to some of those victims. Thank you, Gorman Gaels, for always stepping up for others in need.

Mite Box Each Tuesday morning at Bishop Gorman students hear these familiar words over the PA from Mr. Goode “It’s Tuesday and you know what that means, yes it’s Mite Box!” With that announcement envelopes are passed around each classroom and students and staff generously donate to the weekly collection we call the Mite Box based on Luke 21:1-4 where the poor widow donates two coins from her surplus. This simple Scripture passage calls us to remember that we are truly blessed and that we are to share with those in need. The Mite Box has been a weekly collection at Bishop Gorman since 1994. The Campus Ministry Department started it as a way of helping those in need in the Las Vegas community. One unique feature is all money collected stays in the local community and is distributed by the Matthew 25 Board. The Matthew 25 Board is a group of Bishop Gorman students who meet weekly to review requests received and determine which individual requests to fund each week.

What a very successful drive we had for new and gently used tennis shoes that will be going to Ghana, Africa this spring. In one week’s time, we collected nearly 4,000 pairs of athletic shoes from our families and the wonderful families of Holy Spirit Catholic Church! Additionally, Quest Diagnostic had several locations where they were also collecting shoes to donate, and

Shoes, cont. TruFusion (Yoga, Pilates, etc.) is running a drive for tennis shoes for Africa through the month of December. With little effort, we will be able to put shoes on the feet of thousands of infants through adults, and it is all due to your empathy for people in other parts of the world who have far less than we do. Over spring break there will be a contingency of Bishop Gorman adults who will not only be delivering shoes, but will spend days painting and repairing facilities, as well as spending quality time with some of the youth in Ghana. This drive connects us to each of them, and we can’t thank you enough for always giving and supporting any programs we have at Bishop Gorman.

Marching, cont. The Company 54 production proved to be challenging for the performers and, more importantly, compelling for those who witnessed it. Then it happened, on Saturday, November 3 with a score of 66.75, the Bishop Gorman Marching Band not only secured their highest marking in program history but earned their first-ever 1st Place Title in school history at the Marching Band Open Series - Las Vegas Invitational. Their performance also earned them “caption awards” for Best General Effect, Best Music, and Best Visual Performance in their class out of nine competing bands.

This season, the band was led by Drum Majors Zachary Geinzer ’19 and Adam Goldberg ’20, and their student-leadership was of the highest caliber the program has ever seen. Staff acknowledgments include: Michael Weber (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton) drill design and music arrangement; Matthew Fox (St. Viator) woodwind specialist; Allison Fox colorguard specialist; and Jason Vazquez brass specialist. Congratulations to the Bishop Gorman Marching Band, Mr. Geoff Neuman and Mr. Kyle Bissantz, on receiving this well deserved recognition.

Mite Box, cont. The requests are submitted from over 60 social workers representing several dozen different nonprofit agencies in the Las Vegas Valley. The requests are for emergency rental assistance, energy assistance, medical needs and a variety of other emergency requests. The clients come from all walks of life (elderly, young, veterans, homeless, etc.) and represent every ethnic and religious background. The response from the clients and social workers is truly heartwarming as evidenced by the beautiful thank you notes and cards we receive even though we fund the requests anonymously without expecting anything in return. Our students and staff are so extremely generous and this year, so far after only 10 weeks, have granted requests totaling $19,720 from the Mite box collections. Over the past 24 years the amount distributed is well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars donated by Bishop Gorman students to those in need. This is incredible and has been a tremendous help to many in our community who often have no place else to turn. Way to Go Bishop Gorman students and staff. Always living out the mission and message of Jesus Christ.

More Gael News Final Exams Action Plan REVIEW / STUDY SLEEP ENOUGH EAT WELL 1. Review tests, quizzes and homework assignments. Comprehensive exams often include questions similar to previous tests and quizzes from the entire semester. Therefore it is important to review the questions and answers to these tests and quizzes in preparation of your semester finals. 2. Form a study group. Study groups can be a dynamic way to study for semester exams. It can be beneficial for you and your study partners to compare notes; to help each other identify the correct answers from previous tests and quizzes; and to create practice test questions and review the accompanying material.

3. Explain the course material to a parent or a friend. A great way to review for any exam, and check your understanding of the material, is to explain/teach the information to someone else. If you are able to explain the material to a friend or parent, it is likely you understand the material well enough to perform well on the semester exam. 4. Get enough sleep. Staying up all night to study may sound like a good idea but you may want to think again. Studies show exhausted students can’t concentrate on exams and cramming for a semester exam may actually reduce the amount of information you remember. Wellrested students are typically more alert and relaxed when it comes to test time. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

5. Be well nourished. Mental alertness is key during the exam. It would be a shame if you showed up to the test foggy or groggy due to poor nutrition. Protein-rich foods, such as nuts, eggs and yogurts are all good choices as they promote brain activity and alertness. Fruits and whole-grain cereals are excellent as well, as they have been shown to promote quick thinking. Breakfast is EXTREMELY important, as your brain needs energy to work at optimal capacity. Make sure you have enough time to prepare a hearty meal that you enjoy. Now is not the time to try a new recipe or force down something you don’t like. If you are unable to do solid food in the morning, try a smoothie with brain-boosting fruits and natural sugars.
