The fall sports season at Bishop Gorman produced three state championship teams!

The Women’s Tennis team beat Coronado to win their 18th Nevada State Championship. The Men’s Soccer team beat Green Valley to win their first State Championship since 2007, and the football team won their 4th State Championship in a row by beating Liberty 63-10. Congratulations to all the success of our fall athletes. Special thanks to the Bishop Gorman Cheer Squad for all their hard work and support during the fall season. MORE ATHLETICS ON PAGE 6.

CHICAGO, CHICAGO! 2013 College Excursion During the week of June 3 - 8, 2013, we will visit seven of the most popular and prestigious universities east of the Mississippi River. On this trip we will tour each school and get a sense of what each campus has to offer.

Gael Pride It is unbelievable how quickly this freshman year is passing by.

Hopefully, your child had a successful transition into the high school life. If I were to use the nominations for the freshman of the week as an indication, then I would have to say that this class is a highly motivated group. During this first semester, 215 students received at least one nomination. There were actually 530 total nominations; many students were nominated several times. Congratulations to these students and their parents! Please continue to be vigilant and monitor your student’s progress. The first year is only half done, so there is still plenty of time to improve. The first year is very important to your GPA. Although, there is still time to recover if you’ve had a bad start, it is better to start your transcript with the highest grade point average you can. Remember that transcripts are first sent out during the first semester of senior year, and students will only have three years of grades to send. Thus, freshman year really does count! So let’s stay focused and keep up the great effort. Next month I will highlight the All Stars in each subject for the first semester, as well as the Most Improved students.

National Coaching Award The National Forensic League, the speech and debate honor society, honored Mrs. Christine Ramos with its Diamond Coach Award.

Mrs. Ramos received this first Diamond Award after earning 1,521 points on December 5, 2012.

A Diamond Award recognizes a professional career that combines excellence and longevity. Coaches receive 1/10 points earned by their students in competitions. On June 20, 2013, Mrs. Ramos will receive special recognition at the Lincoln Financial Group/National Forensic League National Speech & Debate Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama.

The National Forensic League is the honor society for middle and high school speech and debate. The League empowers students to become effective communicators, ethical individuals, critical thinkers and leaders in our society.

Freshman PRIDE Program

Winter Art Showcase

Bishop Gorman Visual Arts Department curated its first Winter Art Showcase with the help of the National Art Honors Society.

Selected works included paintings, drawings, black and white photography, digital photography, ceramics and sculpture. Students enrolled in the Visual Arts Department were asked to submit work which embodied their full artistic vision. The instructors could not have been happier! Not only did the work represent all the various media but encompassed all grade levels.

Campus Ministry

HOW ARE THOSE SERVICE HOURS? Students! You are required to complete 100 hours of Christian Service over your four years at Bishop Gorman, with at least 25 completed for each year in attendance. So as freshmen, you should have at least 12.5 hours completed by now. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors should have at least 37.5, 62.5, and 87.5 hours respectively. Remember that students who are deficient in service hours may be denied re-enrollment for the following year. Need ideas? Need some guidance? Please stop by Campus Ministry and see Mrs. Portz…let’s get those hours done!

Liddon Cowden, ’14, found out, through his community service to animal shelters, that nearly all of the animals sleep on cold, hard concrete. Seeing this moved him to lead a drive for small blankets and beach towels to provide them with “beds”.

Seniors should now be complete with their 100 service hours. Seniors who fail to complete the Christian Service requirement prior to Commencement will not be issued a Diploma or Final Transcripts. Please come to Campus Ministry and we’ll make a plan so that you will be able to graduate with your classmates.

Counselor’s Corner COURSE REGISTRATION

Junior Parent Night: Please join us for this very important evening hosted by Larry McAllister, College Counselor: “Introduction to Selective Admissions and the College Planning Process”, it will be held on Monday, February 25th from 6:00pm to 7:00 pm in the Lecture Hall located on the first floor of the Athletic Training Center.

Course registration for 2013-14 school year will start mid-February.

In order to register, please complete the following 2 items: 1. All forms and the registration fee of $500 are due to the

tuition office.

SENIORS College Decisions: Many of you are starting to receive decisions from the colleges to which you applied. As you receive this information, please update your Naviance Family Connection account. Were you admitted, denied, deferred or waitlisted? Inquiring minds need to know!!! This information remains confidential so please don’t hesitate to share. Admission decisions from each of the colleges you have applied to need to be recorded in order to pick up your cap and gown in May.

Service hours should be completed up as follows: a. Freshmen: a minimum of 12.5 hours of the 25 required b. Sophomores: a minimum of 37.5 hours of the 50 required c. Juniors: a minimum of 62.5 hours of the 75 required

A pass will be sent for each student, please be prepared! The course registration guide will be available at www.bishopgorman.org and Edline. Parents are encouraged to go online with their students to review the course content and the prerequisites necessary for each class.

Scholarship Information: Many colleges will include scholarship information in their admission letters. Some will send this information separately. Regardless of how you receive the information, please make a copy of your scholarship letter and give it to Mrs. Burford in Student Services. Scholarship information is listed in the graduation program and we want to make sure that you get recognition for the scholarships you receive. You do not have to attend the school offering the scholarship in order for the information to appear in the graduation program. We include college related scholarships as well as outside scholarship information so please bring us a copy of everything you receive.

JUNIORS Juniors will take the Nevada Department of Education High School Proficiency Tests during the week of March 4-7. The tests are Math, Reading, Writing, and Science. Please encourage your student to get a good night sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, bring two #2 pencils and have a serious attitude about these tests. Results will be received in May. Students who are absent or fail any section of the test can take a Make-up Test in November of their senior year. This is a full day of school for all students and they should wear school uniform.

Please note: students looking to receive the Millennium Scholarship must pass all sections of the Proficiency Tests.

The 2012-13 season begins the 90th Anniversary of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Nine decades of students, teachers and history-90 years of creativity.

The student work will be included in the Southern Nevada Region Exhibit at the Springs Preserve from February 2 - March 3, 2013. With their selection, these talented young artists join the legacy of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.

Athletics | Activities

athletics The winter season is in full swing. Men’s and Women’s Bowling, Wrestling and Men’s & Women’s Basketball are currently under way. Coach Amy Dawson led the Bowling teams to successful seasons. First year coach, Ricky Lundell, has the wrestling team working harder than ever, and both basketball teams are having good seasons. The Men’s team is currently in first place in their league and is ranked #1 in Nevada and in the Top 25 in the country.

Wednesday, February 6 is National Signing Day. Come out and join the Bishop Gorman students as several Bishop Gorman athletes will be signing their national letters of intent. The Signing Ceremony will take place at 11:45 AM in the gym.

Join us on Saturday, February 16th for a Board game themed Sadie Hawkins Dance. The dance will be held in the Bishop Gorman Gymnasium from 7:30pm-10:00pm. Lock-in is from 8pm-9:30pm.

Tickets for the dance can be purchased with cash or check in the Activities Office during lunch and after school until 2:00pm. Prices are $45/couple and $25/single. No tickets sold on Friday, February 15th. Good Luck and Game On!
