Fall Season Sports Bring Home 2 State Championships!

Congratulations to Lori and Gordon Hammond and their Lady Gaels Tennis team as they won the 2013 Division 1 State Championship. This was the 3rd State Championship in a row for the team and their 19th State Championship overall.

Congratulations to Coach Tony Sanchez and the Bishop Gorman Football team as they won their 5th State Championship in a row, beating Reed High School 48-14 in the State Championship game at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Please be aware that you must be verified by FACTS Grant and Aid for your application to be reviewed by the Bishop Gorman Tuition Assistance Committee. Incoming Freshman that have been verified on or before February 28, 2014 and reviewed, will receive notifications of awards by mid-March. All returning students that have been verified and reviewed will receive notification of awards by mid-April.

To senior, Jennifer Teng, who was named a Semifinalist in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. Through this national program, academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to compete for approximately 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million that will be offered in the spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.

To senior, Nicholas Salamunovich, on receiving the “Squire of the Body of Christ” award from the Knights of Columbus. This program recognizes and reqards each Squire for acquiring the skills and attitudes of Catholic leadership as he moves toward becoming a Knight. Most Reverend Joseph A.Pepe, D.D., J.C.D., wrote in a congratulatory letter, “This is a tremendous testament to your love of God, Family and Community and such an honor to be 89th young man in the world and the 1st young man in Nevada to be presented with this honor.”

Our Service Day on December 14th was a huge success! Under the leadership of Ms. Amy Dawson, the Men’s Day Shelter at the Salvation Army was transformed into a tranquil mountain-like setting with

Each Tuesday, our students and staff donate to the Mite Box collection. The monies collected are all used to help the needy of Las Vegas, natural disaster victims, Gorman families in need, and so much more. This year we have collected over $30,000 in the first semester alone!

Mrs. Lora Feely took the lead on the Women’s Day Shelter...there were lovely meadows full of flowers, old stone walls, lots of vine work, and a number of “windows” that gave a peek of the beautiful outdoors. They even had an amazing bicycle with flowers in the basket! Additionally, Mrs. Marjorie Samuels, and several students, painted an entire wall of stone, colorful trees, and an archway showing a path bordered by grass and beautiful trees. The entry to both Day Shelters was also painted a peaceful color and a large “Welcome” sign greets those in need.

Matthew’s Closet is 20!

Matthew’s Closet, one of Bishop Gorman’s best kept secrets, is a place where great things happen on a weekly basis. Matthew’s Closet is unique because it is a charity which is entirely dependent on the Bishop Gorman community. While we serve several agencies throughout the city, Matthew’s Closet is “ours.” Over the years we have helped thousands who have come through our doors.

This year Matthew’s Closet celebrates its 20th anniversary! Each

Thursday, Bishop Gorman students distribute clothing donated by our families, alumni and friends to those in our community who need it most. This year, we will hold a Matthew’s Closet Awareness Week on March 3-7, 2014. There will be several activities on campus to help students recognize the good that they do when they give their time at Matthew’s Closet and we will have a new sock and underwear drive between the four classes. Parents are also encouraged to visit Matthew’s Closet at any time as we can always use a few extra adults.

Social service agencies are invited to apply for financial assistance for their clients in need. Our student-run Matthew 25 Board meets every Tuesday after school to review these applications and determine where they will award financial help. Additionally, we were able to send $5,200.00 to Jesuit priests in the Phillipines to give direct aid to some of the many people in need after the horrific typhoon.

Most recently, Bishop Gorman sophomore, Carly Krueger, was in a serious accident over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Having been hospitalized out of state, this was an emotional and financial strain on the family. On the Tuesday before Christmas break, we held a “Miracle Minute” to assist the Krueger family. The generosity of our families, as always, shone through, and we were able to raise $10,000 for the Krueger family.

It’s important for everyone to know that at Bishop Gorman we are building a community of caring young people, and that Bishop Gorman is a second family for all of us. Thank you so much...and remember on Tuesdays to “BRING A BUCK!”

Regardless of how you receive it, please make a copy of your scholarship letter and give it to Mrs. Burford in Student Services. Scholarship information is listed in the graduation program and we want to make sure that you get recognition for the scholarship you receive. You do not have to attend the school

Juniors will take the Nevada Department of Education High School Proficiency Test during the week of March 3-7. The subject areas are Math, Reading, Writing, and Science. Please encourage your student to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, bring two #2 pencils with him or her, and have a serious attitude about these tests. We will receive the results in May. Students who are absent or fail any section of the test can take a Make-Up Test in November of their senior year. This is a full day of school for all students, including juniors and seniors, and all students MUST wear school uniform.

Bishop Gorman and Best Buddies outdid themselves this year for the Santa Run in December. This was the 4th year we attended and we did great! Our initial goal of raising $875.00 with 25 runners was surpassed by raising a total of $1,780 with 52 runners! Team Bishop Gorman Best Buddies was ranked 4th out of 52 teams!

Liddon Cowden ’14 finished 4th th and Max Dalvey ’15 was 40 for the 5K. Everyone had a good time and we can’t wait for next year’s Santa Run! Go Gaels!

This national award represents her accomplishments, leadership, commitment, creativity, and personal effort contributed to making her community a better place to live.

Athletics | Activities

Athletics Bowling, basketball, and wrestling are currently in League play of their seasons. The bowling program, coached by Amy Dawson, is one of our most popular sports and is having another great year. The wrestling program is competing at a high level and has a record number of athletes competing this year. Coach Ricky Lundell anticipates taking several wrestlers to the Regional and State Tournament this year. In addition, both the men’s and women’s basketball programs are currently in first place and look strong heading into the playoffs.

boy’s basketball teams who came from across the country to compete at Bishop Gorman

High School the week before Christmas Break. Games were held at Bishop Gorman, Faith Lutheran, and the Orleans Arena during the week, culminating on Friday night with three games, including Bishop Gorman vs. Bishop O’Dowd, being televised live on CBS College Sports from the Orleans Arena. Students will depart from Bishop Gorman at 8am Thursday morning for Disneyland’s Grad Nite event and return the following morning. More details will be announced as we get closer to the departure date.

French Consul in Las Vegas Visits Bishop Gorman

On December 5th Monsier Eric Auger, Consul Honoraire, and Madame Chrystel Chamblas, President of the Alliance Française in Las Vegas, visited with the students who are studying French at Bishop Gorman. The students were very excited to meet them and learn more about France, the French culture and its customs. As they wrapped up their visit, M. Auger and Mme. Chamblas held a brief Q & A session, giving further insight into the French culture.
