GAELS FOOTBALL

7th Consecutive State Champions and National Champions Congratulations to the Bishop Gorman Football team as they won their 7th State Championship in a row, beating Liberty High School in the State Championship game at Sam Boyd Stadium.

They finished the season

15-0 and were voted National Champions for the 2nd year in a row by USA Today. Several of the Gaels received end of season and all-state Awards.

The biggest awards went to running back, Biaggio Ali Walsh ’17, who was named the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year and Coach Kenny Sanchez who was voted the Nevada State Coach of the Year. Haskell Garrett ’17, Tyjon Lindsey ’17, Tate Martell ’17, Biaggio Ali Walsh ’17 were also named to the Max Preps Junior All-American Team. Offensive Linemen Jaron Caldwell ’16 and Julio Garcia ’16 anchored the offense and were both named 1st Team All-State.

Congratulations to Zach Collins ’16 for being named to the 24-member McDonald’s All American game.

Zach will participate in the prestigious game in Chicago on March 31, 2016.

The Bishop Gorman Internship Program was designed to offer students a first-hand look into a career field of interest during the summer prior to their senior year. By participating in the program, students will gain firsthand experience within various businesses including Law, Banking, Marketing, Medical, Journalism and more. This is a great opportunity, not only to have an advantage over other graduates by having some professional experience in your field for college applications, but also to be able to have a clearer perspective on your career goals and objectives. Students will be chosen based on their GPA, written application and interview.

To the Graduating Class of 2016 Here are some helpful reminders for our seniors as we get closer to graduation: • Please remember that your attendance could determine whether or not you have to take end of the year finals. Make sure you review our attendance policies on page 9 in the Parent/Student Handbook if you would like to be exempt from final exams in May. • We ask that you keep in mind that ALL students are still expected to follow our campus rules and regulations. All dress code, hair, shaving, and electronic communication device expectations and policies will be enforced even though it is the second semester of your senior year.

TUITION ASSISTANCE: Please note – BGHS has changed the third party tuition assistance analysist to SMART AID. All applications must be submitted to SMART AID, which can be accessed through BGHS website: www.bishopgorman.org under the Admissions’ tab and click on Financial Information.

JUNIORS – SAVE THE DATE! Tuesday, February 9, 2016, 6:00 p.m.

There will be a meeting for all juniors and parents of juniors on Tuesday, February 9th from 6:00–7:00 p.m. in Lecture Hall 326. Mr. McAllister, the college counselor, will review the college application process in “A Roadmap for the College Application Process.” It is highly recommended that you attend this meeting as you begin to think about college visits, applications, financial aid, etc.

Please be aware that you must be verified by SMART AID for your application to be reviewed by the Bishop Gorman Tuition Assistance Committee. Incoming Freshmen who are verified on or before February 19, 2016 and reviewed will receive a notification of award by mail early March. All returning students that have been verified and reviewed will receive notification of awards by mail in mid-April.

A 3D Hand for Hailey On January 19th Mrs. Yong Dawson spoke to Mr. Feely’s 3D Computer Graphics class about the prosthetic hand that her daughter, Hailey Dawson, received from the UNLV Engineering Department.

Five year old Hailey was born with a hand deformity due to Poland Syndrome, a rare congenital condition affecting the chest, breast, and sometimes the arm and hand on one side of the body. Although she is able to do many things with her “special hand” as Hailey calls it, she is not able to grasp a ball for example. Through the use of the prosthetic hand which was printed on a 3D printer, she is now able to use her hand to hold a ball and even write on a chalk board. Most importantly, Hailey, a baseball fanatic and an Orioles fan, threw the first pitch at one of their games in August 2015.

For three days during the first week of November 2015, 43 Bishop Gorman students traveled to Zion National Park accompanied

by Mrs. Feely, Mr. Devlin, Mr. Calkins and Ms. Wozniak. The group was made up of Advanced Art and Earth Science students looking to take in some nature and expand their understanding of their respective studies while in the great outdoors. The trip was filled with hiking, sightseeing, picture-taking, and sampling the local cuisine.

Art students were able to sketch, paint, and photograph the amazing scenery, and Earth Science students had the chance to see up close, the rock formations, rivers, animals, and vegetation they’ve been studying.

Mrs. Dawson explained that this hand not only allows her daughter to do simple things such as grab a water bottle or a ball, but it also will help develop her selfesteem as she grows up.

Because Hailey is a growing child, her hands as well as her needs for her prosthetic hand are growing; the next hand Hailey is due to receive from UNLV will have a thumb that does not move allowing her to grasp better with it. Mrs. Dawson hopes that through her daughter’s experience with this 3D hand, other people affected by Poland Syndrome will learn that there is an affordable alternative that is available to them.

In addition to this trip being an allaround good time, everyone came back with a better understanding of the complex and beautiful world around them.

Students will be utilizing the knowledge they gathered from Mrs. Dawson as they design 3D hands in class. One possible improvement would be to print a 3D negative of the fingers so that a mold is created and fingers could then be made from softer silicone instead of hard plastic. This would allow the user to not only grasp items better but also diminish the clicking sound of the plastic fingers, making the hand seem more natural.

Drawn From Nature

The following art pieces were inspired by the Zion trip and the Plein Air work. The first piece was drawn by Savannah Day ’17 working from a photo taken by Randi Aguilar ’17. Both students were in Art Media 1. It is rendered in oil pastel.

The second landscape is chalk pastel and was created by Sarina Camacho ’17. Mrs. Feely, Department Head for the Visual Arts Department commented “I think they are great, and show the inspiration that was stirred by the great outdoors.”

Brother Dan Tripamer and his Geometry Honors students celebrate their 5th MITE BOX VICTORY of the school year! Great job!

Bishop Gorman volunteers helped collect over 100 new jewelry pieces, purses, scarves, books and nik nacs for our Shop For Your Mom event at the Shade Tree Shelter. It was a huge success and the kids loved shopping through everything and choosing just the right gift for their moms and then wrapping them up and making cards.

Mr. Stephen Gatto and his first period Spanish 2 Class celebrate their 3rd MITE BOX VICTORY of the school year! Great job!

Robotics Walks For Arthritis

E

ach Tuesday, our students and staff donate to the Mite Box collection. The monies collected are all used to help the needy of Las Vegas, natural disaster victims, Gorman families in need, and so much more.

Social service agencies are invited to apply for financial assistance for their clients in need. It’s important for everyone to know that at Bishop Gorman we are building a community of caring young people, and that Bishop Gorman is a second family for all of us. Thank you so much...and remember on Tuesdays to “BRING A BUCK!”

Mrs. Mary Vance, moderator for the Romantic Comedy Club at Bishop Gorman, took students and other staff members to Atria Sunlake Senior Living to watch a movie, play bingo, and simply enjoy being with each other during the holidays. The simple act of taking time to spend with others means so very much.

MEDICAL SOCIETY Donates Hygiene Kits The Medical Society donated 261 Hygiene Kits to Matthew’s Closet during the month of December!

GAELS COME OUT IN FORCE On January 19th, a large group of 65 BGHS students, along with M r. G o e r t e m i l l e r , showed up to work at Three Square Food Bank. What a productive evening!

The Hygiene Kits contained shampoo, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, razors, lotion, and a washcloth.

Counselor’s Corner COURSE REGISTRATION

SENIORS College Decisions: Some of you are starting to receive decisions from the colleges to which you are applying. As you receive this information, please update your Naviance Family Connection account.

Course registration for the 2016-2017 school year will start the third week of February. Each student will be called in individually to discuss his/her courses.

NEW THIS YEAR: 1. At the time of the course selections, the students will receive the forms generated from the Finance Department from the counselors:

Athletics The Bishop Gorman Winter Sports teams are currently in League Play. Basketball, Bowling, and Wrestling have participated in several tournaments and pre-season games and matches.

The wrestling program is making big strides in participation numbers and has become one of the top high school programs in Las Vegas. They have competed in several high level tournaments and have done well in preparation for Regionals and the State Tournament.

The bowling program continues to be one of Bishop Gorman’s most popular sports coached

The women’s basketball team is currently ranked #2 in Nevada with a record of 19-1. They are also ranked in the Top 25 in the country by ESPN. Look for the Lady Gaels to make another run at the Nevada State Title in February.

In December, Bishop Gorman hosted the 4th Annual Tarkanian Classic. Bringing in some of the top teams in the country, the event was again a huge success. With over 100 teams participating, the four day event was attended by teams from all parts of the United States as well as teams from Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, and New Zealand as well as several college coaches and scouts.

After Christmas the men’s basketball team hit the road to take on some stiff competition. Over a four week period they played 5 Top-25 teams and lost some heartbreakers. The team has lost five games by a combined total of 12 points. They finished strong when it mattered most handing in-state rival, Findlay Prep, their first loss of the season.

The Gaels beat the #4 Pilots, 77-71, in front of a great crowd at the South Point Arena on Saturday, January 23rd.

Next up is #1-ranked Photo by L.E. Baskow, LV Sun Chino Hills, at the Nike Extravaganza in Santa Ana, CA.
