BGHS boys Basketball 4-peat!

The men’s basketball team finished the season by winning their final 11 games, and capturing the State Title at the Orleans Arena.

It was the 4th State Championship in a row for the team and the 6th in the last 7 years. The team is currently nationally ranked and will finish in the top 25 in the country for the 4th straight year.

The Gaels had several individual honors this year: Ugo Amadi ’15, Nick Blair ’15, Zach Collins ’16, Chuck O’Bannon ’17, and Richie Thornton ’15 were all named to the Sunset Southwest All-League team.

Chase Jeter ’15 and Stephen Zimmerman ’15 were named Sunset Division Co-MVPs. Nick Blair ’15 ended his successful Gorman career by being nominated to the McDonald’s All American game as well as being named the MVP in the State Finals game with 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 74-54 win against Palo Verde.

Stephen Zimmerman ’15 finished his Bishop Gorman basketball career with 114 wins in four years, the most in school history.

He also became the first player in Nevada History to win four straight Nevada Large School State Championships.

Chase Jeter ’15 was recently named 2015 Gatorade Player of the Year. He is the fourth Gael in five years to claim the award.

Stephen and Chase were also chosen to play in the McDonald’s All American game on April 1, 2015 at the United Center in Chicago, IL.

Human Physiology Class

Investigates

On Thursday, March 12th, a “double homicide” occurred at Bishop Gorman High School. Students in Mrs. DeJoria’s Honors Human Physiology classes will spend the next few weeks processing fingerprints, hair fibers, clothing fibers, and blood evidence in order to solve the homicide of Ms. Divento, a beloved English teacher, and Mr. Petersen, Director of Campus Security. This cross-currricular project involved the Broadcast Media, Journalism and Photography classes as well.

We are nearing the end of the tuition billing cycle for this school year. In accordance with the school’s policy, tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year must be paid in full by April 30, 2015. Please be aware that transcripts and grades cannot be released until your student’s account is current. If you have any questions regarding your student’s account, please contact Vanessa Orozco at 702.476.4023.

You can still apply for Financial Aid for the 2015-2016 school year by visiting our website, www.bishopgorman.org, where there is a link to the FACTS Grant and Aid Company under the Admissions tab. Submit your application, pay the required fee online and send them the necessary documents.

Please be aware that you must be verified by FACTS Grant and Aid before your application can be reviewed by the Tuition Assistance Committee.

Dear Parents:

Those who have been paying attention to the pastoral strategy of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, will have noticed his emphasis on taking the Gospel to those who are marginalized or disenfranchised, particularly those who are poor.

Serving our brothers and sisters who are in need is a constitutive element of what it means to be a Christian. This fact is reflected in the third pillar of the mission statement of Bishop Gorman, which is to “create a community where service is valued and celebrated.”

This year we launched new guidelines for our Christian Service Program, with a stated goal “to help our students engage in acts of justice that promote a living faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.” These revisions clearly articulate what distinguishes Christian Service and Justice from a general or secular understanding of community service. Students are required to complete 100 Christian Service Hours (CSH) over their four years as a student at Bishop Gorman. The breakdown of required hours is as follows: • Direct (no maximum) – service that involves the student having a direct human encounter, working directly with those in need. Examples include serving meals to the homeless or working at Opportunity Village.

• Indirect (25 hours maximum) – service that is at the support of direct service programs and outreach; programs that support humanity.

Examples include “behind the scenes work,” charity walks, etc.

The Zion Half Marathon

• Organizational Support (25 hours maximum) – Service where help is needed, but is more of a responsibility of being a member of the organization. Examples include parish picnics, sports camps, or ambassador programs.

March 14th was a very brisk Utah morning and, as the Gaels team gathered at 6:00AM, they stood shivering amongst the other 2500 runners wondering, “Why aren’t we sleeping right now?” However, if you have ever been a part of a large running event/race you know that the energy can be contagious. Smiles everywhere, some runners in kilts, tutus and others sporting their team colors with the team name Can’t Teach Crazy plastered across their hearts and lungs–both of which you need to run 13.1 miles! Just as the sun was coming up over the majestic Zion landscape the race started and our team began the journey toward the finish line.

The experience was a blast as every runner cheered the next on at the finish line. Our team, made up of Bishop Gorman faculty and staff, worked hard to prepare for the race, and shared a special camaraderie throughout the experience. A special thank you to Sean Feely for taking amazing pictures and Michelle Roberts for her positive energy and support. Rob Crisp, Brandy Crisp, Lisa Rawlings, Wayne Petersen, Debbie Petersen, Jake Smeraglio, Amy Dawson, Julie Hilliard, Lora Feely, Sean Feely, and Michelle keep Running for Sanity (team motto). As long as there are laughs and Mexican food after, count me in!

While our students are committed to success in academics and extracurricular activities, it is important that they keep focus on their spiritual formation, which includes Christian Service. We expect our graduates to be persons of service, who will use their gifts and talents to make a positive contribution to the future communities of which they will be members.

With the “busyness” of the typical high school schedule and the fact that there is not a grade attached to the requirement, some students do not prioritize their service as they should. In an effort to help our students remember their commitment, as well as reward those students who have been responsible, we will have a change in how parking spots are assigned next year.

Those students who are current (or better) with regard to their CSH will receive the privilege of being the first to sign up for their parking spots. Seniors who have 75 or more verified and approved CSH will be allowed to register first, followed by juniors who have 50 or more verified and approved CSH, followed by sophomores who have 25 or more verified and approved CSH. Only then will other students be able to sign up for their parking spots in the normal seniority order.

We continue to remember the words of Jesus: whatsoever you did for the least of these, you did for me. We hope that you have a very Blessed Easter Season!

Dancing the Night Away with Best Buddies

B

est Buddies has one of the largest clubs on campus with over 60% participation at each of our events.

This is the 5th year that our Best Buddies chapter has been active at BGHS and has logged thousands of service hours in the community from Kickball, to the Christmas Gift Exchange at Magical Forest, to Santa Run, and bowling just to name a few. In February alone, chapter moderator, Ms. Nicole Davis, verified over 500 hours!

Having just concluded the 2nd annual Valentine’s Day Dance, they tripled the Buddies count while having a great time. This event was 100% member-run, from the DJ to BGTV filming. Food and decorations were donated by students as well. There was a mask-making section and tables full of cupcakes and cookies. Thank you to all our members who decorated the room for the dance and cleaned up after the party. After the dance, the rest of the cupcakes and cookies were donated to more than nine fire stations in town! Best Buddies never stops giving!

¡Felicitaciones!

Congratulations to Alexa Ivanov ’15! Not only did Alexa receive a score of “5” on the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam in May of 2014, she also was one of 285 students worldwide to receive a perfect score on their AP Exam.

Over four million people participated in AP Exams. She answered every multiple-choice question correctly and earned full points on each section of the speaking and writing sections as well. We applaud Alexa for

her outstanding accomplishment.

Shuttle Missions Recently, Mr. Devlin’s

Recently, the Visual Arts classes were able to listen to Ms. Samantha Samuels (daughter of art instructor Ms. Samuels) from Pixar Animation Studios. Ms. Samantha spoke about what it takes to make a story come to life on the big screen, from storyboarding, animating, lighting and effects to the final rendering. Students saw examples of the various stages of film production and specific examples from memorable films such as Finding Nemo, Monster’s University, Ratatouille, and Up! The various steps taken by the animators was especially hilarious as they take it upon themselves to “act out” specific scenes. With a newfound appreciation for the work, dedication, and love that goes into creating these films, students were grinning ear to ear as they left the lecture hall. Ms. Samantha also took the time to discuss with both Studio and AP students about which college degrees would best prepare them for a future in animation and character development. Bishop Gorman art students will most definitely watch animated films with a fresh and more knowledgeable set of eyes.

Earth Science class and Dr. Hancock’s Physics class were visited by Colonel USAF Retired and former NASA Astronaut, Paul Lockhart.

Colonel Lockhart piloted the STS-111 and STS113 Endeavour missions, both in 2002, which delivered a new crew and research equipment to the International Space Station. Colonel Lockhart discussed the science behind the shuttle’s takeoff, what it is like to live and work in space and participate in a spacewalk to repair a robotic arm. He shared images he took of the Earth from space and discussed the physics involved in a lift-off and re-entry. It was an incredible experience and the students gained a greater appreciation for the science and technology necessary to put humans in space.

TWICE AS NICE! Once again, the Bishop Gorman community steps up to help others in need. For the 4th year in a row, we have sponsored our Twice As Nice formal wear drive to benefit underprivileged local teens. The goal of Twice As Nice is for our students and families to donate their gently used formal wear so other Las Vegas teens would not have the expense of new clothing for Prom or Homecoming.

This program was founded by Bishop Gorman alums, Lindsey and Juliana Remark ’13, and has provided formal wear to many students of Rancho High School as well as other high schools. Once Lindsey and Juliana graduated, other students stepped up to take the helm. Last year, Maggie DiFederico ’15 and Shayna Berger ’15 were in charge of Twice As Nice. This year we have the Remark twins’ younger sister, Brittany Remark, ’18, in addition to Maggie DiFederico and her younger sisters, Sara and Samantha ’18. It’s wonderful to see younger students stepping up to continue something so very worthwhile. It is gratifying for our students and families to know that they are donating to teens who otherwise could not attend their school’s formal dances. This year’s drive has been the best one yet and we hope to see its success continue for years to come!

Students at Bishop Gorman are required to complete 25 hours of Christian Service for each year they attend Bishop Gorman. This can be quite stressful if a student procrastinates, therefore today is a good day to make a change! Campus Ministry has nearly 140 options of service available and those are easily accessed on the Bishop Gorman website: www.bishopgorman. org, go to Student Life, then Campus Ministry, Service, and you can click on the link to this list. Additionally, there are many options with all of the contact information in the lobby of the Chapel. Students are welcome to take photos of these options on our bulletin board for reference, too. We strongly encourage our students to perform as many “direct” service hours as possible; actually serving those in need. Feeding the homeless at St. Vincent’s Dining Room or Las Vegas Rescue Mission, or stocking the shelves at Catholic Charities food pantry with donations are great examples of “direct” service. This type of service is very meaningful and usually very moving for students.

By setting a steady pace for completing Christian Service hours it is easier to accomplish and a lot more enjoyable. Students are always encouraged to come to Campus Ministry for more guidance with service hours; it’s our goal to make this experience fulfilling and meaningful. We want our students to go out into the world and continue to give of themselves.

Conceived more than 30 years ago, the idea of a week-long celebration of reading to be observed in every school in the state of Nevada has become a yearly event. The purpose is to encourage a love of reading by giving children opportunities to read and be read to, with activities and competitions to engage both avid and reluctant readers, and theme-related experiences involving both the school and the community. As part of this statewide reading celebration, Nicco Fertitta ’15 and Larry Otukolo ’15 recently visited the Christian Montessori school to read to the kindergarten and elementary school classes.

Athletics The winter sports seasons have come to a close. Our teams all experienced a great deal of success, bringing home individual awards, league and regional titles, capped off by a state title and a national ranking. (See front cover for men’s basketball recap.)

Both the men’s and women’s bowling teams made it to the second round of playoffs at the Orleans.

Leah Glazer ’17, placed 3rd in the women’s Bowling Individual State Championship at the Orleans.

Leah Glazer also took 1st Place in the Youth Masters Tournament at the Gold Coast.

The women’s basketball team had another good year finishing the season 246. The Lady Gaels won the Sunset Southwest League title and advanced to the State Final game at the Orleans Arena. The team had several standouts including All-Leaguers Skylar Jackson ’17, Megan Jacobs ’16, Raychel Stanley ’16, and Alaysia Robinson ’15. Madison Washington ’16 was named the league MVP.

The spring sports season is now in full swing.

The wrestling team had another successful season and continues to grow in numbers each year. Sean Randles ’15 finish 2nd and received the Nevada Silver Medal at 132 lbs. Jackson Perry ’15 and Mason Campbell ’17 both earned the Nevada Bronze Medal. Santi Arun Bent ’16 also qualified and placed at the State Tournament. Overall, the team had an incredible showing by placing 3rd in the Sunset Region and 7th overall out of 25 teams at the State Tournament.

Tickets are on sale through Thursday, April 9, 2015. Space is limited so they are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Prom is being held on Saturday, April 18th at the Red Rock Casino Resort Spa in the Summerlin Ballroom.

he 3rd annual Spring Fashion Affair was a day full of fun & fashion for a good cause! On Saturday, March 14th, nearly 100 parents, alumni and friends gathered at Saks Fifth Avenue to enjoy drinks & treats, mini-makeovers, shopping and a runway fashion show featuring the latest trends for Spring, including prom dresses modeled by Bishop Gorman students. The best part of the day?

Proceeds from a portion of the event sales were generously donated back to Gorman students!
