approved by Mrs. Portz. These service hours are a requirement for graduation. If a student has not completed the requirements for graduation, they cannot graduate. We do not allow students to walk at the ceremony and complete requirements at a later time. It is also just as important to keep up with academics. There are certain core courses that seniors need to pass and they cannot be credit deficient. We are working very diligently with our seniors to keep everyone on the road to graduation. If you have any questions, please contact me.

By Christi Thomas-McEachern and Lora Feeley Since 1923, the Awards have identified such writing greats as Capote, Plath, Warhol, and Updike, while they were still teens. Today, over $10 million in scholarships are allotted, with over one million works entered in the past five years. Ivy League schools view a Gold Key Winner as the equivalent of a perfect 5 on a comparable English or Art AP exam. Since we began entering these contests, nearly a dozen years ago, our win percentages, including The Voice of America and Best in Show prizes awe the judges.

LEARNING HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY
by Mary DeJoria, Anatomy/Physiology Teacher
If you’ve walked down the 300 hall, you may have wondered what you smell? About 30 cats are being dissected in Honors Human Physiology. Students are required to dissect various internal organs, as well as muscles, paying close attention to their origins and insertions. Squeamish students were immediately transformed into scientists, eager to discover as much as possible about the cats. Cats are studied because of their similar musculature to that of humans.

Faithful volunteers show up every Wednesday to help out at Three Square!!! “Thank you once again for organizing such an enthusiastic group to volunteer at Three Square! We appreciate you and your team contributing time to help individuals and families who face food insecurity and hunger in our community.”
SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE Bishop Gorman students provide a minimum of 38,000 hours of Christian Service to the Las Vegas community every single year! On occasion, we see some real “standouts” when it comes to serving others; this is our opportunity to feature them and to thank them for their service to others. Our first student to be featured in Spotlight On Service is James Henderson, ’20. James transferred to Bishop Gorman this school year and, to date, has completed nearly 140 hours of service! His dedication to Casa De Luz and providing food to families in need is evident in his constant commitment to them. Additionally, James rides his bicycle to serve at needy locations and you will never see him without a big beautiful smile on his face. These are just some of the reasons that we want to honor James in our first Spotlight On Service!
T
he first step to everything is will, but that road only goes so far before it meets implementation. I often hear other peers talking about service hours and how they want to accomplish one hundred hours before their senior year and that is swell, but that is simply will speaking. Will does not get you to one hundred hours, implementation does. After understanding this key concept, the second step is to find an organization that you truly enjoy. Without pleasure, what gives you the motivation to go back? I recommend completing service hours with friends and or family because it gives you someone with whom to communicate. After finding an organization and getting involved, chances are you will have a firm disposition to go back because you realize it wasn’t all so bad after all. Not only are you doing yourself, the community, and Bishop Gorman a service, but you are also following Christ’s Kingly Ministry by displaying a servant attitude. I understand that service can be a breath of unfamiliarity, but after James Henderson ’20 you come to know it, one hundred hours will blow past.
A wonderful quote by Julie Benz: “You really have to work hard and apply yourself and by applying yourself and working hard and being diligent, you can achieve success.” 4
