notes of interest Dear Alumni and Friends Can you believe it … it is already 2014 and what an incredible year for all of us here at Bishop Gorman. As we finish up the 2013-2014 school year with Knight of the Gael, Easter, Prom, Passport and Graduation there never seems to be a lack of excitement around here! Celebrating our 60th Anniversary this year is a milestone that all Gaels, old and young can be proud of, which we are commemorating with a book honoring this historic event. This amazing book, full of pictures and personal interviews with the people that shaped Bishop Gorman into the outstanding school it is today, will be available at “Homecoming 2014” on October 17th (see page 11 for more information). Here at Bishop Gorman we are very proud of our high-achieving students, nationally ranked programs, outstanding faculty and staff that are all part of the Bishop Gorman story. Many of these accomplishments would not have been possible without the annual support of donors, friends and families of our School. These friends include longtime supporters, businesses, BGHS alumni, faculty, and staff—many of whom are regular contributors and devotees that are constantly exceeding expectations. We can’t thank you all enough. With great enthusiasm we have officially launched our new capital campaign, Legacy Now, which will provide much needed support to Tuition Assistance, Faculty Enrichment and Capital Replacements (see page 10 for more information). With this campaign we have some extraordinary news, thanks to the generosity of the families of Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta and the Engelstad Family Foundation. All gifts made by December 31, 2014 will be matched dollar for dollar up to $5 million. What does that mean? This is YOUR opportunity to make your gift have twice the impact on the Bishop Gorman community! We have so many things to be thankful for and we hope that you join us in celebrating the wonderful community we have built over the last 60 years by joining us at all of our upcoming events that you will find listed throughout this Gazette. Gaels Theatre Guild Presents

The theatre department once again delivered an outstanding performance with this season’s Spring Musical performance of Bye Bye Birdie, directed by Elena Ferrante-Martin. So it is no surprise that the Gaels Theatre Guild Thespians received high honors this year once again winning State Champions for the 4th year in a row! Twenty-three students in four events received “Accomplished” ratings and qualified for the International Thespian Festival in June! Legacy students who participated in Bye Bye Birdie include: Louis Hillegass IV '14 (Louis Hillegass III '85), Anna Carothers '14 (Elisa (Zupancic) Carothers '82), Spencer Bisek '14 (Daniel Bisek '85), Emily Sullivan '17 (Christopher Sullivan '84), Delaney Malm '15 (Christopher Malm '81), Olivia Perry '15 (Gina (Silvagni) Perry '72), Kristin Hill '15 (Idalys (Martinez) Hill '82),Veronica Matthews '17 (Carolyn (Brady) Matthews '84 & Thomas Matthews '83), Julia Matthews '16 (Carolyn (Brady) Matthews '84 & Thomas Matthews '83), Emily Rino '17 (Jennifer (Case) Rino '79), Samantha Buckley '17 (Jill (Albiser) Buckley '89), Victoria Lambert '17 (William Lambert '87), William Reilly '17 (Brigid Higgins '79).

Mock Trial Wins State Title 2 Years In A Row!

As the State Champions, the team receives a new case and will begin preparing for the national competition which will be held May 8-10, 2014 in Madison, Wisconsin. In the past few months the team prepared diligently and was coached by local alumni attorneys who volunteered countless hours on a weekly basis. Bishop Gorman teacher and Mock Trial moderator, Kevin Nixon, said “I am very proud of our team, each member performed at the highest level in all five rounds. They knew their case inside and out and their performance was exceptional.” The team’s lead attorney coach Chris Hamner ’95 and Kevin Nixon.

Gaels Serve the community On Sunday, March 16th, St. Vincent’s Lied Dining Room was a busy, busy place! Hundreds of homeless clients came to enjoy a fabulous St. Patrick’s Day meal served to them by Bishop Gorman volunteers. Mrs. Vicki Fertitta has sponsored this special meal, along with one in the summer, and another near the holidays for the last few years, and it is a wonderful day intended to make those who are down on their luck feel valued and special. As always, our Bishop Gorman students were fabulous volunteers and when they weren’t serving meals, drinks, or bussing tables, they spent time talking with many of the clients. This is always a very worthwhile experience and you leave there with a new appreciation for what we are blessed to have. The day was a huge success!

faith on campus

Matthew’s Closet, is 20 years old! Matthew’s Closet is one of Gorman’s best kept secrets, it is a place where great things happen on a weekly basis. The organization is unique for the mere fact it is entirely dependent on the Bishop Gorman community to keep it going. Matthew’s Closet serves several agencies throughout the city and over the years has helped thousands who have come through their doors. Each Thursday, Bishop Gorman students distribute clothing donated by our families, alumni and friends to those in our community who need it the most. To celebrate its 20th anniversary Matthew’s Closet held an Awareness Week March 3-7, 2014 where several activities on campus helped students recognize the difference they make when they participate at Matthew’s Closet. ASG and the Matthew 25 Board worked together to spread the word about Matthew's Closet to help collect jeans, socks and underwear. During Matthew's Closet Awareness Week, 725 pairs of jeans and over 1600 pairs of socks and underwear were donated. The senior class won a free dress day by collecting the most socks and underwear. The Spanish Honor Society did their own sock drive bringing in 555 pairs of socks. It truly is amazing, when the Bishop Gorman community comes together, how they make incredible things happen. Alumni and parents are also encouraged to visit Matthew’s Closet at any time as they can always use a helping hand. For more information on how to volunteer at Matthew's Closet, contact Mrs. Martinez in Campus Ministry at ext 4029.

32nd Annual Knight of the Gael

Honoring Al ’68 and Kathie Faccinto On Thursday, March 27th parents, alumni and friends gathered to honor Al ’68 & Kathie Faccinto at the 32nd Annual Knight of the Gael. Along with their children Missy '93, Tina '96, Katie '99, Taryn '00 & Destinie '13 and about 650 guests, we celebrated a couple who for decades have been loyal supporters, avid fans and generous donors. Their commitment to Bishop Gorman is seen and felt by all. We are proud to call them Gaels and forever grateful for their ongoing support. The evening included a lively cocktail hour and silent auction followed by a delicious dinner by Red Rock Casino and great wines provided by Wirtz Beverage Group of Nevada. After dinner, guests were treated to a special performance by the Gaels Theatre Guild, an update on all the happenings at BGHS and a tribute to the honoree. Thank you to all who participated in this great tradition. We couldn't have done it without the help of our partners, Red Rock Casino Resort Spa, Station Casinos, Wirtz Beverage of Nevada, Destinations by Design, Bernhard & Williams Photography, Encore and Five Star Creative. Thanks to our auction donors Jodie and Stu Berger, Piero's, Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Gustav’s Master Chef Catering, Michael Mack, MGM Resorts International, and Palms Casino Resort.
