Gorman Gaels, Greetings from Bishop Gorman High School. As we close another school year and look forward to the fall, there is lots of activity on campus and boy do we have the town talking! With the number 1 women’s golfer in the world (page 15), a top 5 nationally ranked Mock Trial team (page 4), the North Expansion completed (pages 10-11) and the Class of 2017 as the largest class in school history, you can’t help but feel good to be a Gael. We continue to grow and evolve in our academic offerings, technological advances and physical space. Our students are succeeding in the classroom, on the field and in their extra-curricular activities. We hope that you, our friends and alumni, share in the excitement and pride that comes with being associated with Bishop Gorman High School. The Advancement Office is working hard to offer you a variety of opportunities to be involved and have an impact on our school. Whether it is attending or volunteering at an event, serving on a committee, participating in a service project, making a gift, coming to a game or mentoring our students, we want everyone to feel the strong sense of camaraderie that makes Bishop Gorman such a special place. By being actively engaged in this unique community, you can make a difference for others as well as open new doors for yourself….you never know who’ll you’ll meet or see when you’re at a Bishop Gorman event or on campus! Soon we will be launching a new capital campaign, Legacy Now, which will provide much needed support to some of our most important programs, Tuition Assistance, Faculty Enrichment and Capital Replacements (see page 14 for more details). This is an exciting time to be a part of Bishop Gorman High School. I hope I can count on the support of our over 9,000 alumni, past parents, current parents and friends to contribute to this wonderful cause. Remember, when you give to Bishop Gorman you are contributing to the success of not only our current students but generations of Gaels to come. Make sure you take note of all the action packed activities the fall holds (page 13) and get involved! While this past year has been an exciting one with all of the great things going on around here, we know even better things are yet to come! Bridget (Moore) Michlik '95 Director of Advancement

Maddie Turner ’13 and Ray Winters ’13, received High Honors as they were named Best Actress and Best Actor at the 1st Nevada High School Musical Theatre Awards held at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts on May 20, 2013. This gave both students the opportunity to perform at the 5th Annual National High School Musical Theatre Awards competition held in New York City’s Minskoff Theatre on Broadway on July 1. Maddie and Ray competed against high school award winners from all over the country for the coveted title of Best Performance by an Actress/Actor and a Jimmy™ Award. They experienced five days of intensive theater training led by faculty at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ New Studio on Broadway and other theater professionals. Although our students didn't step away with the top title at this show in New York City, we are so proud of their hard work! Great Job Maddie & Ray!
Mock Trial places at Nationals Congratulations to the Bishop Gorman Mock Trial team and 1st year moderator, Mrs. Jodie Gallagher for finishing in 4th place in the NATION at the National Mock Trial Competition in Indianapolis this past May! track & field The Bishop Gorman Track and Field team brought home two individual State Championships, including a state record by Randall Cunningham ’14. Cunningham, Gatorade Player of the Year, posted the top high jump mark in the country, bounding over the bar at 7 feet, 3¼ inches to take the state title and eclipse the old mark of 7 feet set in 1983. Freshman Vashti Cunningham ’16 won the high jump (5-8) and was second in the long jump.
baseball The Bishop Gorman Baseball team had a successful season, falling one game short of the State Championship. The Gaels had won the previous seven State Championships, but had to settle for the runnerup trophy this year. Congratulations to Kenny Meimerstorf ’13 for winning the Nevada Baseball Gatorade Player of the Year Award. The Arizona signee finished the year batting .427 with 15 home runs, 46 RBI’s, and 15 Runs.
swimming women's lacrosse The Women’s Lacrosse team won their first ever State Championship under first year head coach Lauren Burke Bennett, going undefeated at 20-0 and finishing the season with a dominating 11-5 victory over Centennial. The Gaels were led by team captains Caroline Guida ’13 (Ms. Gael) and Hallie Hoskins ’13 (Offensive MVP), as well as Sydney Brown ’13 (Defensive MVP).
In the State Swim Meet, Bishop Gorman scored 140 points to run away from second-place Palo Verde (82) and win the title. Senior Olivia Barker ’13 won the 200 individual medley(2:04.56) and the 100 butterfly (54.52). Barker is slated to swim in the National Championships and World Championship Trials, the US Open and the Junior Nationals.
A Little Work Goes a Long Way Four years ago Erica Korbel, ’15 (Rick Korbel '83) saw there was too much waste by her peers in middle school when it came to the end of the year with all the left over school supplies. It was then that she decided she would do something to recycle rather than throw things out. She placed collection bins thoroughout her school for the students to put their unwanted school supplies. She then emptied them of papers, cleaned them up, and placed them in boxes to be donated to the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. This endeavor has grown and expanded to BGHS where she has enlisted the help of fellow student volunteers. Erica hopes that her recycling effort, Students United in Recycling School Supplies, will continue to expand, even as she ventures into college!

Bringing Beauty To Those In Need
On Saturday, April 20th, nearly 200 members of the BG family worked at Catholic Charities to give the men’s homeless shelter a brand new look. Volunteers painted beautiful murals,, assembled 200 food bags and toiletry bags for clients of the men's shelter as well as for homeless teens.
After the project was complete, Catholic Charitiies sent a video documenting the clients' reactions to their beautiful new shelter. It was overwhelming to hear their stories and gratitude for the work that was done that day.
Several teachers and administrators from Gorman were also present and worked tirelessly alongside the students.

On May 20 an EF5 tornado struck Moore, Oklahoma. BGHS reached out to the principal of Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School in Oklahoma City, David Morton, to inquire as to how the Gaels could help. The damage was devastating. Student families as well as faculty families from both Bishop McGuinness as well as Mount St. Mary were affected and in need of help. In solidarity with those in need and desiring to help families directly, Bishop Gorman conducted a special Mite Box collection that would directly help these families. Upon the announcement of the Mite Box collection, a Bishop Gorman parent called in with a very unique offer: she wanted to double whatever contributions the school collected. Christy Molasky said “This is very close and dear to my heart because it is where I grew up, rode my bike and cruised Main Street on Friday nights after the football games. I grew up in Oklahoma and I actually graduated from Moore High School.” With student, parent, faculty, and staff participation as well as the matching funds, the school collected $25,524,50.

PASSPORT 2013
This year’s Annual Wine Tasting event , Passport, took Bishop Gorman families, alumni & friends to sunny California! At our new location, Red Rock Resort poolside, guests enjoyed fun drinks, tasty food, great entertainment and of course, some delicious California wines! The night began with a performance by our very own Davey Martinez ’13 and Maddie Alder ’13. The Desert Mermaids and The Bounty Hunters were also there to entertain while attendees sipped on all the best that Wirtz Beverage had to offer. Nearly 70 amazing auction items were bid on throughout the week and at the event with our “text-in” silent auction raising money for our Tuition Assistance Program. The night was a big success and we could not have done it without our gracious performers, sponsors, volunteers and you! Special thanks to all of our auction donors, Missy Cochran Entertainment, Bernhard & Williams, Station Casinos, Wirtz Beverage, KGA Architecture, Republic Energy Services, and GiveSmart! Can’t wait to see where Passport 2014 will take us next! Join us May 16th, 2014 to find out!

Spring 2013
Expanding our Horizons May 29th marked the ribbon cutting of the North Expansion. Members of our community joined together to celebrate the latest addition to the Bishop Gorman campus. Alongside Bishop Pepe, our president Mr. John Kilduff, and Principal Mr. Kevin Kiefer, the classroom building, lecture halls, quadrangle, and commons were dedicated and blessed amongst parents, teachers, alumni, and friends.
The new facilities include 10 traditional classrooms, 2 science labs, 2 computer labs, 2 lecture halls, a practice field, quadrangle, additional parking and an expansion to the Tiberti student commons. The picture to the left demonstrates the seamless continuity from the current campus to the North Expansion and depicts some of highlights of this beautiful space. Thanks to the dedication and professionalism of Chi Chi Bengochea ’80 and his team at Bentar Development, Joe Haley and staff at Fertitta Entertainment and KGA Architecture, the job was on time and under budget. We appreciate all their hard work which made this project such a success. This additional space will allow us to increase our enrollment to 1500 students over time and reinforces our commitment to being a leader in quality, Catholic, college preparatory education. Next time you’re in the neighborhood, stop by to see the most recent enhancement to our campus….you are always welcome!
