Prom 2015 Under The Sea This year’s Prom was held at Red Rock Casino Resort Spa on April 18th. Students who attended this Under The Sea themed event were treated to a buffet dinner, delicious desserts, and dancing.

A special moment during the night was the presentation of our Prom Court and the crowning of our Prom Queen, Nana Turkson '16 and Prom King, Zachary Grech '16.

Setting the Bar High Record Setting Jump Congratulations to Vashti Cunningham '16, on breaking the national high school record in the girls' high jump on April 18th at the 57th annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, CA. Vashti cleared 6 feet, 4Âź inches to win the event and making her #1 US all-time in the girls' high jump, beating the national record of 6'4" which had been shared

by Amy Acuff (in 1993) and Toni Young (in 2009). We congratulate Vashti on this great acomplishement and wish her much success as she continues to aim higher!

Graduation Events

As the year comes to a close, we would like to highlight some of our academic achievements.

First of all, we would like to congratulate Hannah Rogers '15 and Cammi De La Cruz '15 for being named the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. We are very proud of these two young ladies who have challenged themselves academically and achieved at the highest levels. Hannah will give the valedictory address at Commencement, and Cammi will give the salutatory address at the Senior Awards Night.

Pick up Cap & Gown • May 6 • during both lunches in the Hammes Campus store.

Senior BBQ • May 8 • during both lunches in the Quad Senior BBQ will be held between 10:25 a.m. and 12 noon in the Quad.

Beginning on May 4, we will begin the annual administration of the Advanced Placement (AP) Exams. The AP Program is truly the “gold standard” of college level coursework taken in high school. Students who pass these exams with a score of 3, 4, or 5 will in most cases earn college credit. This year, we will administer 515 AP exams in 15 subject areas including mathematics, science, social studies, English, world languages, and art.

Graduation Practice • May 13 • 9:30 a.m.

(Gaels Period) in the BGHS Aux. Gym. We will review procession, seating, and the procedure for receiving your diploma. We will also cover the senior class trip itinerary and rules.

Senior Trip to Disneyland • May 15-16 All seniors attending the class trip will meet in the gym on May 15 to load the bus.

Demonstrating comprehensive success in the program, the following recognitions were awarded to last year’s seniors: • 43 AP Scholars – students who received a 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams • 11 AP Scholars with Honors – students with an average score of 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more AP Exams

Senior Academic Awards Night • May 19 • 6:00 p.m. in the BGHS Gym. This is a significant evening for seniors, their families and friends. This formal presentation will include the announcement of scholarships, academic awards and a speech by the salutatorian. Please wear appropriate, modest “dress” clothes. Cap and gown are not to be worn.

• 10 AP Scholars with Distinction – students with an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more AP Exams We expect that students will continue to succeed in the Advanced Placement program, and encourage them to prepare diligently for these exams.

And in order for all of our students to continue to achieve at such outstanding levels, it is important that everyone remains focused through this very busy final month of the school year. With just a few weeks of school and final exams to complete before summer break, we encourage everyone to “finish strong,” providing their best effort toward completion of the school year.

Baccalaureate Mass • May 21 • 6:30 p.m. • Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer at 55 E. Reno Avenue (Las Vegas Blvd. & Reno) Please arrive by 6:00pm. Bring your ironed gown to the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer. Please wear “dress” clothes under your gown. No caps are to be worn to the Mass. Please try to carpool as there is limited parking available.

Graduation • May 24 • 12:00 noon at the Orleans Arena (4500 W. Tropicana Avenue). Seniors should arrive at the Orleans Arena by 11:15 a.m., enter through the ticket office door and go directly to the “Gold A” meeting room to put on their caps/gowns and line up by 11:30 a.m.

State Champions!

Congratulations! This year we are celebrating four state champions in contrasting monologues, three in solo musical theatre, two in duo acting, two in duet musical theatre, and two in technical theatre short film. acting-contrasting monologues: Madelynne Moffet ’15 and Jewel Esparza-Fernandez ’16, received a 4.0 perfect score! Both students were also scholarship winners! Other State Champions include: Devin Beckwith ’15 and Delaney Malm ’15.

t is difficult to believe that freshman year is over for the Class of 2018. I believe that it was a very good year as exemplified by the large number of nominations for the Freshman of the Week award. Listed below are the winners from the second semester. If freshman year did not turn out as well academically as you had hoped, then you have time to turn it around for a successful sophomore year. It would also be a great idea to sign up for Summer Enrichment classes.

Welcome Class of 2019!

We would like to welcome the class of 2019 to the Bishop Gorman family. As you prepare to enter high school, make sure you take some time to read. You will find that high school will require more work from you. To better prepare yourself, it is advisable to sign up for Summer Enrichment classes. By attending summer classes, you will become familiar with the school and meet some of the members of your class.

Additionally, summer work will be posted online. All students (even incoming freshmen) will be tested on their summer reading during the first week of school. You will also receive a copy of the Student Handbook; it is advisable that you and your parents become familiar with its contents.

Each class at Bishop Gorman has a class slogan which you will vote on in summer school. We would like your ideas as soon as possible.

Voting will begin the second week in June. Last year’s class slogan was “Born to be Gr8, Class of ‘18”; the year before was “Class of ’17, the Dream Team”. Please submit your ideas to deans@bishopgorman.org . We will choose from your ideas and let the summer school classes vote. Please submit your ideas by June 1st.

Walking for Best Buddies!

Thanks Bishop Gorman! This year we had over 150 walkers and volunteers at the Best Buddies' Friendship Walk & 5K on March 14th! Proceeds from the walk play a fundamental part in funding our state program which provides oneto-one friendships, leadership development and integrated job opportunities for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Mr. Devlin's Class 1st Mite Box win! And, Mr. Lieb and class have won FIRST PLACE in MITE BOX more than any other class this year!

Go, Mr. Lieb!!

At the Walk, our Best Buddies Chapter was recognized for having the most volunteers for a school and Ms. Davis, Chapter Moderator, was given the award for Friendship Advisor.

Bishop Gorman was also one of the top ten donating schools.

Zoe Pappas '15 baked delicious treats for the Trendz Youth Center's Valentines Day event earlier this year.

Best buddies ends the year

on a roll!

Best Buddies had its end of the year event at Red Rock VIP Bowling area. We had about 75 buddies attend this awesome event that was catered with snacks and amazing desserts. There were as many as 96 bowlers playing at one time! Many people had strikes and were bowling games of 120 points or more.

We would like to thank Nicco Fertitta '15, for making sure that this was an event to remember. Can’t wait for next year!!!

Mr. Goertemiller and Mr. Fiore join students at their weekly food sorting at Three Square Food Bank. On this trip, they helped sanitize enough bins to distribute 15,000 Kids Cafe meals for children who are hungry in our community.

Preparing to Study: A Good Study Place It is hard to believe the end of the year is near…with the second semester quickly coming to a close it is important to be ready and preparing for final exams. Here are some helpful hints to keep you focused!

A good study place is important. See if you can answer YES to all of the following questions: 1. Is my Study Place available when I need it?

If you are using a shared Study Place, work out a schedule so that you know when you can use it.

2. Is my Study Place free from interruptions?

It is important to have uninterrupted study time. Hang a DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door and turn your phone off.

3. Is my Study Place free from distractions?

Research shows that most students study best in a quiet environment. If you find that playing a stereo or TV improves your mood, keep the volume low.

4. Does my Study Place contain all the study materials I need? For example computer or iPad and supplies such as pens and pencils, paper, ruler, calculator, etc.

5. Does my Study Space contain a large enough desk or table? Use a desk or table that is large enough to hold everything you need.

Allow enough room for writing and try to avoid clutter.

6. Does my Study Place have enough storage space? Be sure you have enough storage space to allow you to keep your desktop and other work surfaces clear of unnecessary materials.

7. Does my Study Place have a comfortable chair? A chair that is not comfortable can cause discomfort or pain that will interfere with your studying. A chair that is too comfortable might make you sleepy. Select a chair in which you can sit for long periods while maintaining your attention.

8. Does my Study Place have enough light?

The amount of light you need depends on what you are doing. The important thing is that you can clearly see what you need to see without any strain or discomfort.

9. Does my Study Place have a comfortable temperature? If your Study Place is too warm, you might become sleepy. If it is too cold, your thinking may slow down and become unclear. Select a temperature at which your mind and body function best. Having a good Study Place is important for good studying.

Emma Bailey '16 and Shannon Page '17! After being recognized with a Gold Key regionally, they both received National Gold Key awards.

In New York City, panels of nationally renowned artists, art professionals, and arts educators review Gold Key works from across the country.

The artwork is judged in the digital format. Jurors select work for national recognition based on three criteria: 1) originality 2) technique and 3) emergence of a Personal Vision.

All national award recipients (approximately 1,800 students) are invited to National Events in New York City in June 2015.
