Prom 2016 This year’s Prom was held at Suncoast Hotel and Casino on April 9th. Students who attended this Vintage Vegas themed event were treated to a buffet dinner, delicious desserts, and dancing.

A special moment during the night was the presentation of our Prom Court and the crowning of our Prom Queen, Sasha Araujo '17 and Prom King, Sean Hale '17.

Thespians to Perform at The Smith Center On Sunday, May 29, 2016, Veronica Matthews '17 & Christian O Brien '16 will be representing Bishop Gorman High School at the annual Nevada High School Musical Theatre Awards at the Smith Center. Christian will be reprising his role as Harold Hill while Veronica will be reprising her role as Marian Paroo both from our 2015-2016 musical, The Music Man. Previously, at the 2013 competition, Maddison Turner won the award for Best Actress and Raymond Winters won the award for Best Actor. Both advanced to the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City and performed on the Broadway stage at the Minskoff Theatre.

Graduation Events

The end of the year is in sight, and the overwhelming urge is to “coast” to the finish. This does not work! It is true, the start is important; however, everyone judges the performance by the finish.

Having spent over 14 years in the classroom and witnessing this, it is very tempting to take the easy way to the finish…the easy way meaning using someone else’s work as your own.

We will also cover the senior class trip itinerary and rules.

Technology advancements enhance our capability to share information almost instanously. The internet allows us to access worldwide websites from our phones, iPads, and other devices to research assignments for school. These capabilities are great; however, students must use these capabilities appropriately during their higher educational experience.

The 2015-2016 Parent & Student Handbook has an excellent discussion regarding academic expectations beginning on page seven.

Continuation of this discussion addresses academic honor code and integrity on page 10 while the discussion is interwoven throughout the handbook. As stated in the handbook, “Adherence to the Academic Honors code promotes the level of academic integrity required within the school and assures that student work is judged fairly when evaluated against curricular standards.” The handbook goes on to identify disrespect for academic integrity as a serious infraction on page 18. The consequences for violating academic integrity procedures are outlined on page 22 under level 3, 4 & 5; depending on the frequency. If you haven’t read the handbook; I would encourage you to do so.

SENIOR ACADEMIC AWARDS NIGHT • May 17 • 6:00pm in the BGHS Gym. This is a significant evening for seniors, their families and friends. This formal presentation will include the announcement of scholarships, academic awards and a speech by the salutatorian. Please wear appropriate, modest “dress” clothes.

Cap and gown are not to be worn.

BACCALAUREATE MASS • May 19 • 6:30pm Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer at 55 E. Reno Avenue (Las Vegas Blvd. & Reno) Please arrive by 6:00pm. Bring your ironed gown to the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer. Please wear “dress” clothes under your gown.

No caps are to be worn to the Mass. Please try to carpool as there is limited parking available.

Integrity is a skill not a talent! This means that integrity is learned.

People learn by being taught by parents, churches, schools, etc.

However, most of all, they learn by example and the most important of all these sources are you, the parent. Students look to their parents as an example because they believe in you and that you are looking out for them. This is a tremendous responsibility.

GRADUATION • May 22 • 12:00 noon at the Orleans Arena (4500 W. Tropicana Ave.) Seniors should arrive at the Orleans Arena by 11:15am, enter through the ticket office door and go directly to the “Gold A” meeting room to put on their caps/gowns and line up by 11:30am.

When a young adult attends one of the military service academies, they undergo honesty and integrity training all four years. The first step of this process is the decision by the student to be a person of integrity and then it becomes a matter of practice until it becomes the foundation of their character. The decision must come first and they must want it. Then, as in the military academies, our job is to fight the good fight and continue to “train” our students the best we know how. We must present the role model for them regarding honesty and integrity and when a teaching moment presents itself, use it. Talk about situations and how to handle, react, and if necessary remove themselves from a bad situation. Personally, having raised two daughters and one son, it is not easy, but it is the only way; honesty and integrity must be the foundation of our relationships and the cornerstone of our character.

With their season over, Speech & Debate closes the year with great news!

Congratulations to Senior Alex Schunk on qualifying to compete for the World Schools National Debate Team, which is comprised of five students from various schools in Southern Nevada. Alex also qualified in Extemporaneous Speaking at the National Speech & Debate Tournament to be held in Salt Lake City this June.

Congratulations to the following 9th grade students who have been nominated more than once this year for the Freshman PRIDE (Prepared for class, Respect self and others, Integrity in academics, Determination, Effort in all you do) award: Michael Bonifazio, Jasmin Borja, Meghan Burke, Julia Johnson, Alexis Kruljac, Brett McEachern, Victoria Orozco, Steffianna Sorrentino, Colbi Rohr, Lauren Whitmire.

ongratulations to Lauren Burke '18 on her completion of the United States Equestrian Federation's (USEF) Equestrian Athlete Lettering Program developed to provide recognition for the accomplishments of young equestrians and honor individual achievements with a varsity letter.

Since Alex's spot in domestic Extemporaneous Speaking opened up, senior Isabella Riezler, as the runner up, now qualifies to go to the National Speech & Debate Tournament in Salt Lake City.

Bishop Gorman has two qualifying students.

Participants must be students in grades 5-12 who document at least 100 hours of training and provide verification of participation in three equestrian competitions during the year.

USEF is the National Governing Body for Equestrian Sports in the United States, sanctioned by the United States Olympic Committee pursuant to the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act.

In addition, sophomore Hunter Manz successfully won 3 of the 4 levels of competition in the Lion’s Club Speech contest. He earned a $1250 scholarship for winning level three. Moving on to the fourth level State Championship he will have a chance to win another scholarship worth $4000! Hunter’s speech about Water Conservation is the same speech he performed to win the State Tournament for Speech & Debate.

Lastly, congratulations to Ms. Scoville on being named the 2016 Speech & Debate Coach of the Year for the Golden Desert Speech & Debate Association in Southern Nevada.

C

ongratulations to Alexandra Burke '19 who, earlier this year, was selected as 1 of 13 players to represent the Mountain Zone Olympic Development Team out of all the athletes in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado. After competing in the Women's Olympic Development National Championships this past March, Alexandra was selected out of 224 athletes, to try out for the Cadet National Team which travels around the world representing the United States. Alexandra was also recognized as one of the top 20 athletes in her age group in the United States and is now vying for a place on the traveling team.

The USA National Cadet Team will represent the United States at all international water polo competitions this summer and fall and is the pipeline for future Women Senior National Teams to represent USA in future Olympics.

Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders Congratulations to sophomore Sydney Lobato on being selected as a delegate to represent Bishop Gorman and the State of Nevada at the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Boston, MA, June 29 through July 1, 2016. The Congress is historic in its nature. An honors-only program for high school students who have a demonstrable GPA of 3.5 or above and want to go into STEM-related careers. There is no other national gathering of thousands of the country’s most gifted high school students.

BG Sophomore Saturdays Halle Muchowicz '19, spends an evening with Fr. McShane and Girl Scouts from St. Anne's, handing out food and other items to homeless clients.

Not only did over 40 students show up for the final Sophomore Saturday at Three Square, they also brought with them 40 bags of groceries! We are excited to see such participation from the Class of 2018 and with the success this program achieved this year.

Many thanks to Dean Anderson for implementing Sophomore Saturdays and to Ms. White for helping out at this final Saturday.

• Does my Study Place have enough light? The amount of light needed depends on what you are doing, be sure you can clearly see without any strain or discomfort.

• Does my Study Place have a comfortable temperature? Too warm may make you sleepy; too cold may slow you down. Select a temperature at which your mind and body function best.

Having a good Study Place is important for effective studying.

This year, the BGHS Robotics Team did very well in competition and were excited to attend the State VEX Robotics Competition in Henderson.

THE MEMORY PROJECT

Our Spring sports are in full swing and getting ready for the playoffs. All our teams have had busy travel schedules with men’s volleyball going to San Diego, softball in Savanna CA, men’s and women’s lacrosse played in St. George, UT, track & field has made a few trips to Orange County, men’s golf to Glendora and Indio, CA, the #19 baseball team went to Tucson, AZ while our swim team has been working hard here in Las Vegas. All are doing a great job of representing Bishop Gorman and we wish them the best of luck in the post season.

A unique project in which art students create portraits for children and teens around the world who have been neglected, orphaned, or disadvantaged. This program aims to provide these children with special memories that capture a piece of their childhood. Students and teachers at Bishop Gorman have been working hard to complete these portraits for The Memory Project. To date, The Memory Project has created more than 80,000 portraits for children in 35 countries. The Visual Arts Department is grateful for the opportunity to touch the lives of others through the gift of art.

Congratulations to men’s basketball team, Coach Grant Rice, for being named the USA Today Nevada Coach of the Year and Zach Collins ’16, USA Today Nevada Player of the Year.

Don't Drive Impaired

On behalf of NASC, I want to congratulate your student council on being recognized as a 2016 NASC National Gold Council of Excellence. This was no small task and your students’ success in earning the award is a testament to the leadership and support they, and their adviser, receive from the school administration, and to the value placed on student council as an integral part of Bishop Gorman and its educational mission.

On Friday before Prom, the Bishop Gorman Administration, in coordination with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and Ewing Bros. Towing, placed a wrecked vehicle on display at the entrance to the Bishop Gorman student parking lot. The wrecked vehicle was there to remind passersby of the magnitude poor decision-making can have on their lives and the lives of others.

To further recognize the achievement of earning this national award, please accept the attached NASC National Gold Council of Excellence seal.

While Prom and graduation season is a time for celebration, the dangers of driving while distracted, impaired or without a seat belt, have devastating consequences.

As the school year comes to a close, the Bishop Gorman Administration strives to raise awareness to help students make smart decisions and drive safely.
