Dear Parents
Graduation Events Schedule Senior Academic Awards Night • May 21 • 6:30pm BGHS Gym A significant evening for seniors, their families and friends. This formal presentation will include the announcement of scholarships, academic awards and a speech by the salutatorian. Please wear “dress” clothes. No cap and gown should be worn.
As the year comes to a close, I would like to highlight some of our academic achievements. First of all I would like to congratulate Sarah Bessen ’12 and Michael Bessen ’12 for being named the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. We are all very proud of this sister and brother who have challenged themselves academically and achieved at the highest levels. Sarah will give the valedictory address at Commencement, and Michael will give the salutatory address at the Senior Awards Night.
Senior BBQ and Yearbook Signing • May 22 • Fourth Period Senior Yearbooks will be distributed and the senior BBQ will be held between 10:15 am -12:00 noon in the Senior Plaza. Senior Final Exams • May 23 and 24 Finals in periods 4, 5 and 6 will be on Wednesday, May 23. Finals in periods 1, 2 and 3 will be on Thursday, May 24.
Beginning on May 7, we will begin the annual administration of the Advanced Placement (AP) Exams. The AP Program is truly the “gold standard” of college level coursework taken in high school. Students who pass these exams with a score of 3, 4, or 5 will in most cases earn college credit. This year we have 249 students testing in 16 subject areas including mathematics, science, English, social studies, and world languages. The AP Program at BGHS has been on a five-year upward trend with 53% of testers passing in 2007 to 64% of testers passing in 2011. Furthermore, the school recorded 49 AP Scholars last year, which requires both taking a minimum of 3 AP Exams and earning minimum average score of 3.0 for all AP Exams. We are expecting our students to continue to succeed in this program.
Graduation Practice • May 24 • BGHS Gym We will review procession, seating, and the procedure for receiving your diploma. We will also cover the senior class trip itinerary and rules. Senior Trip to Disneyland • May 25 - 26 All seniors attending the class trip will meet in the gym no later than 7:30 am to load the buses. Students will stop in Barstow (must bring own money for food), attend the Disneyland event from 1:00 pm to 3:00 am and once again stop in Barstow to eat before continuing home on May 26. Baccalaureate Mass • May 31 • 6:30pm • Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer 55 E. Reno Avenue (Las Vegas Blvd. & Reno) All seniors should arrive by 6:00pm. Bring your ironed gown to the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer. Please wear “dress” clothes under your gowns. No caps should be worn to the Mass. Please try to carpool as there is limited parking available.
Furthermore, Bishop Gorman students continue to distinguish themselves through their performance in the Nevada High School Proficiency Exams. The Class of 2012 posted the following passing rates, which are all higher than the state and local averages:
Science Mathematics Writing Reading
Graduation • June 3 • 12:00 noon Orleans Arena (4500 W. Tropicana Ave.) Seniors should arrive at the Orleans Arena by 11:15am, enter through the ticket office door and go directly to the “Gold A” meeting room to put on their caps/gowns and line up by 11:30am. Please wear “dress” clothes. Immediately after graduation, go to the appropriate table to pick up your diploma (only the cover is given to you on stage). The gown, cap & tassel are yours to keep.

In order for our students to continue to achieve at such outstanding levels, it is important that everyone remains focused through this very busy final month of the school year. We still have four weeks of school and final exams to complete before summer break. I encourage everyone to “finish strong” so that we can move into the summer break knowing we have given our all.
2012 Book Buy Back Book Buy Back event dates are: Senior Buy Book will be 5/24/12 from 11am - 2pm, in the AUX Gym. Underclassmen will be 6/1/12 from 11am - 2pm, in the Main Gym.
Congratulations to the Class of 2012, and I hope everyone has a wonderful summer break.
The Book Buy Back days are the only days available to return your school books on campus, no exceptions. If a student misses the assigned dates, they must return their books to ESCO themselves.

The GOURMET GAELS have arrived!! Brianna Ruvo '14 loves to bake...and we are finding out that so do a lot of our students! Brianna brought the idea of creating a "Gourmet Gaels" service group that will provide cupcakes, cookies and other sweet treats to the youth in Las Vegas who would normally go without. The first baking session was on Wednesday, March 21st, and the recipient of these 202 delicious Easter cupcakes was TRENDZ Youth Center, which is located in North Las Vegas and run by Bishop Gorman alum, Michael Flores '06. This service group will have a lot of fun earning their service hours by providing for many children in Las Vegas.

SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE! Kudos to Lynsey Ng '13 who chose to lead a Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive to support Three Square and provide sandwiches for the homeless school children of Las Vegas. Due to Lynsey’s efforts, we are not only giving Three Square three extra-large barrels full of peanut butter, jelly, and other canned foods…but also a donation for $200.00 from the Columbian Squires Circle 5271 that will purchase even MORE to help some of our food insecure children. TWICE AS NICE for a second time! Thank you, Juliana '13 and Lindsey Remark '13, for once again providing many Las Vegas teens an opportunity to attend their prom without the expense of the dress or suit! Our drive to support this cause was very successful and Juliana and Lindsey provided all the announcements, signs, and containers to help this program run very smoothly. Terrific work, ladies! If you are aware of a BGHS student who is choosing to go above and beyond in the area of Christian/Community Service, please let Campus Ministry know! We like to shine a light on some of the many wonderful things going on here!
We received a wonderful thank you letter from First Choice Pregnancy Services that we’d like to share… "Thank you so much for participating in our Baby Bottle Change for Life program! We are thrilled and thankful that Bishop Gorman High School raised $1,820.00 on behalf of mothers and their unborn children."
We continue to make a huge difference with your wonderful donations. Thanks To All!

Counselor’s Corner Well, it is hard to believe that the school year is coming to a close. With that being said, that means that finals are right around the corner. Included in this month’s issue are some study tips that will help you “ace” those finals!
• Tip 5: Get help - If you are having trouble memorizing something or a particular concept is just not sinking in, get help before it’s too late. Ask your teacher to go over a glitch you might be having. Or if memorizing 200 vocabulary words seems like too much to do, recruit your family members to quiz you with index cards.
• Tip 1: Start early - Preparation for exams should begin earlier than the day before the test. You can’t cram an entire semester of information into an all-nighter. Get started at least 2 weeks before the exam.
• Tip 6: Sleep - You need at least seven hours of sleep a night to function. Tests are designed to make you think. If you are sleep-deprived, you won’t be able to remember any of the information you worked so hard to cram into your brain.
• Tip 2: Organize - Begin by making a calendar outlining a daily schedule of topics for review. Cover a small amount of material for each class each day. Every time you complete a topic, give yourself a mini review.
• Tip 8: Don’t rush - You have spent at least two weeks studying, so what’s another couple of minutes? Work through the exam slowly and read all the questions before answering them. If you are done before the time is up, look over your answers. Source: Next Step Magazine
• Tip 3: Outline - Once you have decided what you need to study and how much time you need to spend studying, it is time Utilizing these helpful tips will ensure that you do well. Remember to actually study. One of the best ways is to make outlines. As you that final exams are worth 20% of your semester grade, so it is read over your textbook and class notes, write a brief summary important that you do well. for each topic. Highlight the areas in your outline that were most troublesome. When you have finished with all the material, you will have an outline you can review. • Tip 4: Make flashcards - Similar to outlining, making flashcards is a really helpful technique for studying. By writing down the information from your outline, you are already doing half the studying. Once the flashcards are complete, you will have a portable study packet to look over.
Classroom Notes Kyle Carlson ’12 is shown completing a crystallography lab. Students studied crystal formations by growing copper sulfate pentahydrate crystals over a three week period. These brilliant blue crystals are among the easiest and most beautiful to grow.
Counselor’s quote of the month:
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” - Harriet Tubman
Creating A Dream Home “When are we ever going to use this?” This is a question many math teachers find themselves answering on a regular basis. This year students in Geometry Honors connected classroom material to the real world. Students created a blueprint of what their dream house would look like; with a certain amount of
rooms and shapes to be used. Then students included the desired dimensions and type of flooring in each room. They calculated the area of each room: the house, the cost per room and total cost of the flooring for the whole house. Lastly, students built their dream house and enjoyed being creative, while doing math at the same time, making connections to the real world.
Dr. Terri Hanlon, mother of Kaitlin Andrewjeski ’12 , spoke to the Honors Chemistry classes on her specialty palliative care. This branch of medicine focuses on relieving and preventing the suffering of patients with serious illnesses. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and their families. Dr. Hanlon is responsible for creating a team of doctors, nurses and other specialists who work with the patient’s doctors in providing an extra layer of support. Palliative care includes hospice care. Through her lecture, students learned of a very special and unique branch of medicine.
