Walk with the Team and enjoy the morning with fellow members of the BGHS community, while helping to reclaim the future for millions and find the cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. Dear Parents: We are very excited about the launch of our 1:1 iPad program, which began with the distribution and rollout of the iPads this past July. The goal of the program is not simply to have these devices serve as substitutes for print materials; rather, it is that learning is transformed such that technology is a vehicle for students to engage in the highest levels of creative and critical thinking as they interact with and master the college preparatory curriculum. That being said, we also realize that this transition is a process that will take a few years to complete – this year we are focused on simple substitutions and incremental instructional enhancements.

Here are a few highlights of enhancements that we have already seen during this academic year.

• Digital Textbooks – while it took us a couple of weeks to resolve both expected and unexpected launch issues, our teachers and students have now adjusted to having digital textbooks. No longer must students carry an unwieldy backpack full of books as their entire course load is accessible through the iPad. Additionally, the students and teachers are discovering the power of the interactive textbooks, which allows students to highlight within the app and have a summary of their notes automatically created.

Many of the books also have hyperlinks to relevant videos as well as self-scoring practice assessments so that students can monitor their own learning prior to a formal assessment in the classroom.

• Digital Notes – many of our students have transitioned to taking all of their notes digitally. Students are using the app Notability to both type notes or write notes with a stylus on the iPad. Notability also allows students to take a picture of information on the board or the screen; the students can then annotate the picture as necessary to enhance their understanding of the presentation.

• Screencasting – apps such as Doceri and ShowMe are being used by both teachers and students to assist with the learning process. These apps allow a person to write, draw, and demonstrate visually while simultaneously recording an audio narrative.

This allows teachers to conduct the “flipped classroom,” wherein watching the teacher’s lecture and notes is now homework and the active practice of the necessary curricular skills is now conducted in class with the teacher coaching and providing immediate feedback. Students use these apps to explain the reasoning and process behind their presentations and their conclusions.

Our Director of Instructional Technology, Ms. April Sauline, has been diligently working with students during the beginning of school to ensure they are up and running. Now her work will turn more toward helping teachers research, discover, and implement the best practices of technology in each of their unique disciplines. Furthermore, Ms. Sauline already has worked with several teachers who are beginning to make a move to the “paperless classroom,” which allows for a majority (if not all) assignments to be submitted digitally. This process is both environmentally conscious and preparatory for digital learning environments that students will experience in college and beyond.

We look forward to continued technological improvements that will enhance the student learning experience at Bishop Gorman.

elcome to the Class of 2018.

We are very happy to say that the Class of 2018 seems to be making a good transition into high school. School began in August with two days of orientation just for freshmen in conjunction with LINK program. All freshmen have been assigned a LINK leader to assist them this year.

• In an effort to minimize the disruptions to the academic setting please ensure that your student has all of their materials (homework, lunch money, practice clothes, etc.) prior to leaving home in the morning. The only deliveries that will be accepted are iPads and medications.

• Students must bring all medication (over-the-counter and prescription) to the School Nurse and the following conditions must be met: o Parent has read the Diocesan Liability Waiver regarding the administering of medication and has signed student’s health card indicating permission to take the medication at school o All medication must be kept in its original labeled container.

Many freshmen have gotten involved by participating in sports and clubs. A club fair was held for students to get information.

Freshman class elections were held as well and the results will be included in the next issue.

The Freshman of the Week, as part of Freshman PRIDE, kicked off the first week of September. The first two Freshman of the Week award winners were Camden Kay and Imma Caoile.

After being here such a short time, they still each received several nominations!! To be nominated for the award, the student must be present and on time for each class that week. All assignments must be turned in on time, and the student needs to show good behavior, effort, and attitude all week. In addition, they have to show their school spirit by wearing a spirit tee shirt on Friday.

Congratulations to all who were nominated.

Mite Box

The year started off strong for Mite Box with well over $1,000 in donations the first several weeks! So far, the Mite Box trophy has not left Mr. Lieb's classroom and they are determined to keep it for most of this year!

Our Mite Box collection, which is taken every Tuesday morning during first period, assists the needy of Las Vegas all year long. Last year over $54,000 was donated by our staff and students, and it looks like we are on track to surpass that number this year. The winning class receives the Mite Box trophy for a week, has their picture taken and posted in their classroom and the Commons, and even get a little treat; while not a huge reward we are happy that this motivation keeps everyone bringing in bucks for Mite Box. Thanks to all who contribute! Your donations go a long way.

CHALLENGE!

On Friday, September 5th, at the home game against Bingham, Utah, Mr. John Kilduff, Mr. Kevin Kiefer, Ms. Virginia Cunningham, and Mr. Tracy Goode hustled onto the football field to take the ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE! On the day prior, we held a Miracle Minute during our school day to raise money for ALS, which brought in over $2,000!

After students took the honors of drenching our administrators, the cheerleaders went into the stands to collect more money for us to send to ALS, and we just mailed them a check for $3,500! This was an easy way for us to support a tremendously worthy cause, and we are thankful to have such great team players in our top administration.

Now we wait to see if those they challenged will also follow through!

IS GIVING IT

BOARD ALL AWAY! Our Matthew 25 Board consists of a group of students from all grade levels who gather every Tuesday after school to determine where our Mite Box funds will be distributed.

Social Service agencies submit a multitude of applications on behalf of needy clients in Las Vegas and the Board reviews each one of them. After much discussion they vote on how to handle each application and how much, if any, will be awarded to the client. Our students are consistent in showing up for meetings and they take this

This year the 5th Annual Viatorian Youth Congress was held in Las Vegas for the first time ever during the first week of August. Bishop Gorman students participate every year in both a participant and leadership capacity. VYC is a four day retreat where students focus on Eucharist, prayer, social justice and Christian service. This year six Bishop Gorman students participated as delegates: Allie Wahlquist 15, Carla Skalman '15, Allison Romero '16, Natasha RomeroSalas '16, Madison Thompson '15, and Justin Daus '17. Two Bishop Gorman alumni, Zach Wells '13 and Angela Romero '13 were young adult leaders. In addition, many BGHS alums and faculty, participated in the Congress in a variety of ways, from serving meals to gathering with the group in prayer and other activities.

Athletics:

Fall Sports at Bishop Gorman are in full swing. With league play beginning, our teams have experienced successful starts in their non-league and tournament games.

Most teams have taken trips out of town, giving them valuable time bonding with their team mates while playing top level competition.

Our other fall sports teams have all participated in pre-season tournaments and events, preparing them for league play and the Sunset Zone playoffs. Look for league results and playoff information next month.
