Internship Program

On January 18 and 19, approximately 370 student leaders, participants and adults on campus participated in the Breaking Down the Walls program. Each full-day workshop aimed at helping students build a common sense of purpose and improve compassion and respect on our campus. Programs like this help us to continue to educate the whole person and reinforce our vision of sustaining a positive campus climate.

The Bishop Gorman Internship Program was designed to offer rising seniors a firsthand look into a career field of interest during the summer prior to their senior year. By participating in the program, students will gain firsthand experience within various businesses including Law, Banking, Marketing, Medical, Journalism and more. This is a great opportunity, not only to have an advantage over other graduates by having some professional experience in your field for college applications, but also to be able to have a clearer perspective on your career goals and objectives. Students will be chosen based on their GPA, written application and interview. This program is beneficial to help students develop a professional skill set and begin to network within the community! For more information, please contact Mrs. Blasek in the Advancement Office at LBLASEK@BISHOPGORMAN.ORG or 702-476-4034.

The junior class will receive more details about the application process this month. Visit: www.bishopgorman.org/internshipprogram for more information.

When the day had ended I felt an immense love for and from everyone.” Maddie Carlovsky ’19 “I think the day helped me realize that I’m not the only person dealing with things in life, and that there is always another person that can understand my situation. Listening to other people is the best way to understand and appreciate someone for who they are.” Julia Sanman ’19

“Breaking Down the Walls was such a great experience! I got the opportunity to connect on a more personal level with many people I had never even spoken to before on campus.” Sloan Pyatt ’20

Congratulations to Seo Yeon

Lee ’19 on receiving a perfect score of 36 on the ACT college entrance exam, and then again with a 1600 on the SAT! The Review Journal reported that, among the graduating class of 2017, “only about 0.1 percent of students earned a perfect score on the ACT. No current figures were available for the SAT, but a spokesperson said the figure is roughly a fraction of 1 percent.” How did she do it? Seo Yeon took it upon herself to study approximately 5 hours a week and took many practice exams.

Congratulations

to Carson Browder ’19 on being selected for the 2018 High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He will perform with his trombone on February 4, 2018, with the National High School Instrumental Honor Ensemble. Participation in one of the five Honors Ensembles is limited to the highest-rated high school performers from across the world. When asked about this, Carson said “I am honored to perform with other music students from around the world. Mr. Neuman has created such a positive culture for our music program at Bishop Gorman. I am so honored to be representing our school at this event in such a historical venue.”

Helping Our Community

Gorman Students Pack 1000 Backpacks

Our annual blanket drive at Bishop Gorman is named for the young alum who began this tradition as a junior at BGHS. Riley Foley ’08, was very aware of how difficult even the Las Vegas winter nights might be for those who have no protection against the elements. He had his first blanket drive while still in high school, and we continue this tradition in his name. Bishop Gorman families and other businesses in our community came together and delivered tons of blankets once again! All blankets donated throughout the two week drive were given to Las Vegas Rescue Mission. During this very chilly time of the year, the clients of Las Vegas Rescue Mission are tremendously appreciative of the blankets we provide. Many thanks to all who were a part of this; you should feel really great knowing you provided warmth to someone who truly needed it!

On December 6, the 2nd floor of the ATC was a buzz of activity as over 50 Gorman students gathered to put together 1000 backpacks to be distributed to the homeless clients who shared a special Christmas meal on December 10. The backpacks were filled with a variety of necessities, including toiletries and warm socks, generously donated by Mrs. Vicki Fertitta. The students created an assembly line and lovingly put together the backpacks that were given to the clients following their meal at the Lied Dining Room of Catholic Charities. The special Christmas meal is sponsored by Mrs. Fertitta in honor of her late husband, Frank Fertitta. She wanted the clients to leave with a little something to make their day a little brighter. The meal was served by members of the Bishop Gorman football team and cheerleading squad as a way of giving back to the Las Vegas community.

The ever-faithful, Mr. John Goertemiller, and his great Gorman volunteers started the 2nd semester off with a bang at Three Square Food Bank!

MITE BOX

This past December, Katie Grierson ’20 shared some kindness by “baking a difference”. She not only baked for 5 hours, but also delivered the baked goods to Best Buddies, Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, and to Veterans, in response to the events on October 1.

CORRECTION: In the Dec 2017/Jan 2018 issue of Sharing The Pride the teacher was identified as Mrs. Suzanne Wilson, in fact it is Ms. Mary Wilson’s 1st Period Class who so generously donated and got their first Mite Box win of the school year! Thank you Gaels for your generosity!

Way to go Katie! 4
