GRADUATION PRACTICE • May 2 • 9:30 am (Gaels Period) in the BGHS Aux. Gym. We will review procession, seating, and the procedure for receiving your diploma. We will also cover the senior class trip itinerary and rules.
s Dean of the Class of 2018 and the Class of 2022, it is a very busy time of the year! During this month, I would like to focus on welcoming the Class of 2022 to the Bishop Gorman Family. I am looking forward to meeting you at Freshman Orientation on August 9-10. This is mandatory for all freshmen so please mark your calendars! Classes begin on August 13th for all students, so orientation gives you a chance to meet your teachers before everyone is here. You will be getting more information in a few weeks so please read all correspondence from Bishop Gorman.
SENIOR BBQ • May 4 • in both Gyms • 10:45 am – 1:15 pm PICK UP CAP & GOWN • May 8 • during Gaels Period and both lunches in Campus Store.
Freshman year will be a change for all of you in a very positive way. As you prepare to enter high school, make sure that you take time to read daily. You will most likely find that high school will require more work from you. More than half of you signed up for summer school classes which is a very advisable thing as you will get used to the work required, learn your way around campus and meet members of your class. In addition, ALL students will have summer work posted on the school website! Please be sure to check what books have been assigned to your level and for any other summer work pertaining to your classes for next year. All students will be tested on their summer work during the first week of classes. You will also receive a copy of the student handbook by the end of the summer. Please read through it and become familiar with the rules we have for attendance and dress code at Bishop Gorman High School.
SENIOR TRIP TO DISNEYLAND • May 11 & 12. All seniors attending the class trip will meet in the gym on May 11 to load the bus. SENIOR FINAL EXAMS • May 14 & 15. Please see weekly schedule for specific dates and times. ACADEMIC AWARDS NIGHT • May 16 • 6:00 pm in the BGHS Gym. This is a significant evening for students, their families and friends. This formal presentation will include the announcement of scholarships, academic awards and a speech by the salutatorian. Only those students receiving an invitation will be receiving an award(s). Please wear appropriate, modest “dress” clothes. Cap and gown are not to be worn.
At Bishop Gorman, each class has a class slogan which will be with you for four years. The graduating class had “Born to be Gr8, Class of One Eight”; this year’s freshman class has “We are great, We are fun, We’re the Class of 21”. We would like to have you submit your ideas for the class slogan before June 1, 2018, so that we can have a vote. Please submit class slogans to ianderson@bishopgorman.org
BACCALAUREATE MASS • May 17 • 6:30 pm • Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer at 55 E. Reno Avenue (Las Vegas Blvd. & Reno) Please arrive by 6:00 pm. Bring your ironed gown to the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer. Please wear “dress” clothes under your gown. No caps are to be worn to the Mass. Enjoy your summer and I look forward to meeting you and your families and helping you to get the most out of high school! If you have any questions, you can also reach me by email this summer.

Learning Raku
On April 10, 2018 the AP Studio: 3D Design and Advanced Ceramics classes visited Clay Arts Vegas studio to experience a Raku firing. Raku is a Japanese method of firing glaze on clay where the pots are removed from the kiln while the glaze is melted and placed into something combustible. The carbon produced from the fire then alters the glaze and clay body. Brilliant metallics are the result of the metals in the glaze reacting to fire, water, and air.
Congratulations! Jason Wong '19, was recently selected as a Harvard Prize Book Award winner for 2018. This award, given by The Harvard Club of Nevada, is very sought-after, although it does not include scholarship money. To apply, students in their junior year complete a brief application, submit a personal essay, along with their current transcripts, and a teacher's recommendation letter. Jason was recommended by his teacher, Mr. Radzak. Winners are then chosen from this select group of nominated students who must have a minimum GPA of 3.75, and six Honors and/or AP classes. Once awarded, the Selection Committee offers feedback on the personal essay in order to better prepare the student for their college application submittal.
Speech & Debate Congratulations to Rachel Raps '19 and Brooke Powell '19 on qualifying to compete at the National Speech and Debate Association Tournament. This year
We also had a demonstration from CAV’s Artist in Residence, Emily Nickel. She also showed us her most recent figure sculpture. She was very informative and talked not only about making art, but being an artist as a career.

THE MEMORY PROJECT Art students in Mrs. Feely's class just finished over 50 personalized portraits of children who are in Syrian refugee camps and in Haiti through The Memory Project. Mrs. Feely was very impressed with the artwork done by her students and commented "this is a wonderful service piece that our art students participate in each year." The Memory Project is a charitable nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and their students to create and donate portraits to youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as violence, disasters, extreme poverty, neglect, and loss of parents. Since being founded in 2004, the Memory Project has recruited tens of thousands of teenage artists, on six continents, to create more than 100,000 personalized portraits. These portraits help the children feel valued and important, and act as meaningful pieces of personal history in the future. For the art students, this is an opportunity to creatively practice kindness and global awareness.

SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE This month in our “Spotlight On Service” we are featuring three students who have been the leaders for this year’s Matthew 25 Board. They, along with the rest of the Board, determine where our Mite Box monies will go to assist Las Vegans in need. Each of them offered their own personal reasons for taking the lead with the Board and how this has affected them personally. Brandon Young '19: Matthew 25 Board has impacted my personal academic life in numerous ways. I have been a part of the board since my freshman year at Bishop Gorman. This year, as a Junior, I had the great opportunity to become a leader and present the applications to the other board members. The atmosphere of the entire campus is completely altered stepping into one of the meetings. The stories and struggles that we as a group can help with is one of the most heart-filling experiences you can have as a human being. Walking through the halls, I see my classmates in a different light knowing that, through their Mite Box donation, each of them have supported the Matthew 25 Board. All in all, the experience of supporting and leading the Matthew 25 Board has changed my perspective as a high school student at Bishop Gorman High School. Holly Lozzi '19: For me, the highlight of every week is leading Matthew 25 Board. It is so much more than a weekly school Mite Box donation and group meeting after school on Tuesdays. It is truly a way of exercising Jesus' teaching of showing love and generosity toward our neighbors. I cherish leading this group of empathetic and charitable students who share a common vocation for serving others. Not only does this program humble me in gratitude for all the blessings and positivity in my life but, more importantly, heightens my awareness that there are more struggling members of our community than many people realize. Through Matthew 25 Board, I can be a part of a group that reaches a helping hand out to people in their darkest hours to show them they aren't alone. It is extremely fulfilling and rewarding to see the difference we are making in the city of Las Vegas. Matthew 25 Board is what sparked my passion for community service and that is something I am endlessly thankful for. Angelia Fertitta '19: Even though I have only served on Matthew 25 Board for two semesters, the board has changed my perspective of service immensely. I started my junior year participating and soon became a leader by reading the applications to the other students. Becoming more involved with the Board has allowed me to get to know what Mite Box and Matthew 25 Board is really doing for our community. The change that one high school and a small group of dedicated students can do is inspiring. Being able to help so many people in Las Vegas by doing an action so simple as Mite Box has changed the way I thought about community service and has allowed me to do even more for my community.
Senior Service Celebration!
March 22nd was our day to show a little appreciation to our seniors who have completed their service hours. Free dress and treats all day long outside of Campus Ministry provided a fun and festive mood for the Class of 2018. Thank you for your 35,000 hours of service to the Las Vegas community! We are certainly proud of you!
Thank you to these Bishop Gorman students who joined Mr. John Goertemiller for productive evenings sorting and packing food at Three Square Food Bank.

ith the second semester quickly coming to a close, it is important to prepare and get ready for final exams and AP exams. Here are helpful ideas to keep you focused! PREPARING TO STUDY: A Good Study Place
SET ATTENDING COLLEGE:
In order to receive your graduation ticket for your cap and gown, seniors must identify the college they are attending in Naviance. If you need assistance in completing this task, please see your counselor.
• Is my Study Place available to me when I need it? If you share a Study Place, work out a schedule so that you know when you can use it.
JUNIORS
• Is my Study Place free from interruptions? Uninterrupted study time is important. Hang a DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door & turn your phone off.
SAT/ACT TESTS:
It is recommended that juniors take the SAT and/or ACT in the spring of their junior year. If you have not already done so, please consider the June SAT and ACT (late registration fees may apply) or the July ACT. You can register for these tests at www.collegeboard.org and www.actstudent.org, respectively.
• Is my Study Place free from distractions? Most students study best in a quiet environment. If you find that playing a stereo or TV improves your mood, keep the volume low. • Does my Study Place contain all the study materials I need? Keep reference sources and supplies such as pencils, pens, paper, your iPad, a calculator and whatever else you might need handy.
Dare to Believe, from front page The theme Dare to Believe! speaks to the diversity of people present at Youth Day. The teens attending Youth Day are all in different places with their faith. Some may be on fire for the Lord, and others may be experiencing a lack of belief. Dare to Believe! resonates with all of the teens,
• Does my Study Space contain a large enough desk or table? Use a desk or table that is large enough to hold everything you need. Allow enough room for writing and try to avoid clutter. • Does my Study Place have enough storage space? Be sure you have enough storage space to allow you to keep your desktop or other work surface clear of unnecessary materials that can get in the way. • Does my Study Place have a comfortable chair? An uncomfortable chair can cause discomfort that will interfere with your studying. One that is too comfortable might make you sleepy. Select a chair in which you can sit for long periods while maintaining your attention.
compelling them to go further in their faith. This message from the readings challenges teens to Dare to Believe! in Christ, even when they have hardships in life, or when they are experiencing great joy. It challenges them to find new ways of finding Christ in their everyday lives and really
• Does my Study Place have enough light? The amount of light you need depends on what you are doing; be sure you can see without any strain or discomfort. • Does my Study Place have a comfortable temperature? Too warm, you might become sleepy; too cold may slow you down. Select a temperature at which your mind and body function best.
living as true disciples of Christ. Dare to Believe! will draw teens further into their faith, and leave them wanting more.
Having a good Study Place is important for effective studying.
