Dear Alumni and Friends, When my classmates voted me “Most School Spirited” my senior year, I would have never guessed that that school spirit would bring me back to Bishop Gorman, almost 9 years later, as a member of the Bishop Gorman Advancement team. There was certainly a lot to take in coming back to Gorman. Every time I saw one of my former teachers for the first time since graduating, it was nothing short of a celebrity sighting for me, and so heartwarming when they remembered who I was. The Homecoming assembly this year was especially memorable. To see the student's excitement, as I sat there and watched them gathered in the House of Glory, filled me with emotion. They were so pumped-up for Friday night’s game and it brought back great memories of all of my Homecoming events. Reliving the experiences of the first day of school, Mass in the gym, Kairos, basketball games (just to name a few), makes me very sentimental. I have been at Gorman for nearly a year now and whether I am having lunch with one of the teachers, who happens to be a former classmate, or I am saying hello to my friend’s little brothers or sisters in the hallways, I am continuously reminded of the camaraderie that comes along with being a Gael. As a student, I was proud to be a Gael because of the friends that I made, the sports we excelled in and the fact that the Dean of my school did cartwheels at assemblies! What other school could say that? But now, while all of those things are still a testament to my Gorman pride, what makes me the most proud is seeing that this school still encompasses the same legacy. No, we no longer have to travel to another school to borrow their football field and students do not have to walk on planks in the flooded hallways when it rains thanks to our beautiful new campus. But, the traditions and values that are the heart and soul of Bishop Gorman, remain the same and it is the Bishop Gorman family that truly sets the school apart from any other.
I am proud to be a Gael because it means I am a part of a special community that is made up by all of you, our alumni and friends. I am proud to call Bishop Gorman "home". Lauren Blaney '04 Assistant Director of Advancement

"...because we hold ourselves to a higher standard" This year’s Prom was held at Red Rock Hotel and Casino on April 6th. Students who attended this Starry Night themed event were treated to a sit down dinner and dessert, dancing, photo booth and a candy wall with lots of goodies to take home. A special moment during the night was the presentation of our Prom Court and the crowning of our Prom King, Mr. Ryan Gregory ’14 and Prom Queen, Ms. Shannon Hale ’14 (Diana (Haggerty) Hale ’75).

into the woods The Gaels Theatre Guild took to the stage once again with the Spring Musical, this time – Into the Woods. This musical takes everyone's favorite storybook characters and brings them together for an adventure that is scored with music, excitement, and emotion! The tale itself follows a baker and his wife on their journey to have all of their wishes granted. Along the way though, we find the consequences that come as a result! Some of the characters in this come-to -life fairytale musical included, a Witch (played by Maddie Turner ’13), Cinderella (Kristina Wells ’13), Little Red Riding Hood (Alexa Wells '15), Rapunzel (Victoria Hudman '13), the Baker (Ray Winters), and the Narrator (Dylan Arredondo ’13).

athletics & activities The winter sports season was another successful one for Bishop Gorman athletics. The wrestling team made big strides under first year coach Ricky Lundell. The men’s and women’s bowling teams enjoyed the season taking wins and strikes! The Lady Gaels basketball team went to state and did a great job, but fell to State Champion Reno High School. Congratulations to Tonishia Childress ’13 and April Rivers ’13 on four successful years playing for the Lady Gaels Varsity team. They were both just recently named to the All-State Team as well. The men’s basketball team capped off a 29-3 season with a 69-43 victory over Centennial High School in the State Championship at the Orleans Arena. It was also the fourth state championship for the team in the last five years.
Congratulations to Stephen Zimmerman ’15, Rashad Muhammad ’13, and Noah Robotham ’14 who were all named to the All-State Basketball Team. The Scholastic Art and Writing Competition evaluates a student’s promise in dozens of categories. This year’s writing segment of the competition once again had Bishop Gorman students taking the majority of the awards. The Best in Show was awarded to Bryce McEachern ’14 (Christi (Thomas) McEachern '86) and to senior Madison Tucky ’13 (Kristina (Stiver) Tucky '81). These Gold Key winners will have their pieces sent to New York for evaluation by nationallyrenowned authors and publishers. If they receive a Gold Key award in New York, they will be invited to receive a finalist award on stage at Carnegie Hall this May and to participate in a four-day conference with internationally renowned speakers on the arts.

mock trial goes for gold
Mock Trial is working hard to achieve our goals this year! Both of our teams were sent to state this year in Reno! The Orange Team placed first in the state and will be representing the state of Nevada at Mock Trial Nationals in Indianapolis May 10-11. We have fabulous attorney coaches who have volunteered their own time to help both Mock Trial teams. Bishop Gorman is so blessed to have hard working attorney coaches who are great coaches and mentors for the students. Their schedule is already so busy, yet they find time (7-10hrs a week) to help the Mock Trial teams. Thank you Coaches: Chris Hamner '95, Nick Portz '02, Emily Montgomery '02, Kelly (Przestwor) Giordani '02, and John Giordani.

who we help
teens helping teens Brandon Wulff '15 and Alex Perron '15 are two Bishop Gorman sophomores who keep extra busy with baseball and other extracurricular activities! Yet, they somehow managed to make time to change the community for the better. Brandon and Alex started SHouT (Students Helping Out Teens) and they are making life better for homesless teens around Southern Nevada. Alex and Brandon are one reason we proud to be a Gael! Check out their story below: As students of Bishop Gorman, we are always looking for ways to help the less fortunate. The school does a lot for the community, and we feel we can never do too much to help those in need. The environment is an important cause for us, and we wanted to find a way to incorporate saving the environment and helping the homeless at the same time. After hours of research, we discovered that the plastic bags that we all have been encouraged to recycle are being thrown away by Republic Services. The majority of them are not being recycled at all. After searching the internet, we found a use for the plastic bags by creating sleeping mats for the homeless. The mats are completely made out of plastic bags. The bags are cut into 4” and 6” pieces. The pieces are attached to each other to make “plarn” (plastic yarn). Approximately 300 bags are used to make one mat.
We built a loom and weaved the cut plarn to make the mat. It took the two of us 15 hours to finish one mat measuring 6’ x 3’. A braided strap, also made of plastic bags, is attached to the mat and can be rolled up using elastic for easy carrying. Recently, with the plarn already made, four people were able to complete a mat in three hours! Our goal is provide enough mats for as many people as we can. At this time, we are targeting homeless teenagers, and eventually want to expand it to all homeless people. With your help and the plastic bags that we all have in our homes, not only are we helping the environment by recycling the bags, we are also providing a comfortable sleeping mat for the homeless. The more we work together, the more mats we can make. Please donate your time and plastic bags! If you’d like to get involved you can donate your plastic bags to the cause! Drop off at Bishop Gorman in Campus Ministry. If you’d like to help Brandon and Alex make mats, contact wulff.brandon@gmail.com or asperron55@gmail.com

matthew 25 board Every week our students collect money for Mite Box, a long time Gorman tradition of donating our change, dollar bills, and often even more to help those in our community who need it most. An elected group of students, the Matthew 25 Board then collectively reviews applications for financial assistance and decides where exactly that money should go. Every year, our students raise over $50,000 for Mite Box. Here is a look at some of those we’ve helped: *A single father and his 10 month-old son *Medical bills for a young boy with a seizure disorder *A 4 year-old cancer patient *An elderly woman who needed food for her pantry *A family who could not pay the funeral expenses for their son *A social worker who is battling cancer *The 23 year-old daughter with bone cancer and her family of five
*An elderly woman who suffered abuse from her son and his spouse *A single 66 year-old woman needing 11 medications regularly *A woman caring for her cancer-stricken mother and her four year-old son *A 30 year-old wheelchair dependent mother of 5 children *Countless more who needed assistance with rent and/or food

On Saturday March 2nd, nearly 100 parents, alumni, & friends gathered at Saks Fifth Avenue to enjoy drinks & treats, mini-makeovers, shopping, and a real runway fashion show featuring the latest trends for Spring, including prom dresses modeled by our students. The best part of the day? Proceeds from a portion of the event sales were generously donated back to Gorman students! Black Jack: Cards Class of 1963: The BEST! The Las Vegas Strip: Life Blood Politics: My Life Girls' Reverse (Sadie Hawkins): Home Alone Something you don’t know about me: I'm in the Bob Book! (it's a book about all different people named Bob!) Gorman: HAPPINESS
seven questions with
Gov. Bob Miller '63 politician . catholic . gorman gael
A loyal Gael from the Class of ’63, Governor Bob Miller served as Governor of Nevada from 1989-1999. Recently publishing his first book, Son of a Gambling Man, Gov. Miller recalls many stories in this exciting memoir of his life from the gambling world to the Governor’s Mansion. Read on to hear how being a part of our Gorman community shaped so much of his future!
So let’s talk about your recently published book, Son of a Gambling Man. Why did you decide to write a book now? Well, a lot of me writing this book came from family encouragement. They really felt I had a story to share that was one-of-a-kind. With where I have come from and where I have been, from a child in Chicago to growing up in Las Vegas, with the influence of my father’s involvement in the gaming industry and mine in politics – it just felt like the right time to write a more personal version of the growth of this historical city. Bill Clinton wrote the foreword to your book, and seemed to have a deep appreciation for your pride in Nevada’s culture. He wrote “Bob’s journey could have only happened in Nevada”… Why do you think that is? What is it about the uniqueness of Nevada that allowed you to have such great success on your journey? I think he thought my journey was so unique because it truly could have only happened in Nevada. I was the son of a man involved in the underground gaming world in the Midwest. My family eventually moved to Nevada, the only place where the glitz and glamour of gambling was esteemed, let alone legal, and later on I became involved in the government of this state. You see, in any other city, I wouldn’t have stood a chance becoming an elected official because of my father’s involvement in gaming, both in Chicago and Las Vegas. I am the only Governor who came from gaming. Your father is a clear inspiration throughout this book, and you mention the importance of education to your family growing up – especially Catholic education. How do you think your Catholic education has impacted you in your personal life & political career? My parents focused on giving each of us a quality Catholic education. It was important to them, and I see why now. I think it has given me the discipline, and the ability to work through personal and career struggles. My parents were very strict about keeping me out of the gaming world – education came first. They were motivated to make sure I had every chance to grow in my faith. Jesuit education has carried me throughout

my life, not only at Bishop Gorman, but in my undergrad at Santa Clara University, and at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. If you could make one statement about Son of a Gambling Man to the Gorman community, what would it be? Buy the Book! (no seriously though, it’s good – we know! Check it out at amazon.com) You’ve got a big reunion coming up, 50 years! Which makes you one of our very special “Golden Grads” at this upcoming June Graduation. Any favorite memories? I think what I most appreciate from attending Gorman were the friendships I made. I still have many of the friends that I had in high school, even from when I attended St. Anne’s. We raised our families together and were able to watch this city change into what it is today. Probably one of the greatest memories I have is when I ran for the Representative position in Student Government and lost. That was the day I told myself I would never lose again and to this day, I haven’t. We know you were Vice President of Student Council when you were in high school, what did you learn from the president, Tito Tiberti '63 that you took with you to the Governor’s Mansion? Basically, I had to do everything for Tito, he just sat back watched it all happen (only kidding…). Tito did teach me though that as a leader, you have to be able to delegate and oversee. It’s important to have the right people in your corner. This issue of the Gazette is all about sharing your pride! Finish this statement “I am proud to be a Gorman Gael…”

YEAR AFTER YEAR Being a Gorman Gael is a tradition for many families in our community, and carrying on that legacy just made sense for Bob Mulroy ’65 ... check out why he is proud to call himself, and his two children, Gorman Gaels: "Gorman provided me with the necessary tools I needed to succeed in life not only with the solid education I received, but in being a member of the Gorman community itself. Passing along the Gorman Legacy to my children was very important to me because a quality high school experience is one we will always remember. That’s why I continually donate to the Gael Force, so that other families and students can have the same amazing experience that myself and my children were able to have." - Bob Mulroy ’65 "Gorman pride is always a constant in the Mulroy house with three graduates. Not only did attending Gorman provide me with the education needed to succeed in college, but it also opened the doors to the Gorman community…an amazing extended family." - Kelley Mulroy ’06 Pictured: Kelley ’06, Bob ’65 & Ryan ’05
