OKLAHOMA!

The Bishop Gorman Mock Trial team competed this past weekend at the state competition. They went up against Galena high school from Reno in the championship round. They had won all their rounds prior to that round including beating Galena in the 3rd round on the prosecution side. In the championship round however, Galena prevailed and we came away as the state runner-up.

Congratulations to the cast and crew of our spring musical, OKLAHOMA! for sharing ‘plenty of heart and plenty of hope’ with our community in March.

The team consists of Rebecca Arteaga ’14, Shannon Carson ’13, Aidan Coronel ’13, Phillip Froehlich ’12, Conor Gaffney ’12, Danielle Maatouk ’14, Michael McIntosh ’13, Jason Moore ’14, Andrew Ryan ’13, Gianna Santoro ’13, and Ben Schlichting ’13.

Gianna Santoro ’13 received a Best Attorney award for the tournament. The team is coached by Bruce Dickinson, Chris Hamner, Judge Jennifer Togliatti and Sarada Toomey.

These committed thespians received standing ovations for all twelve performances of the production. We are proud of their commitment to our school as they strive for excellence through the performing arts.

Dear Parents:

It’s spring and Bishop Gorman High School is preparing for the site visit from a team of evaluators from the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC) on April 30th. The reaffirmation of accreditation occurs every six years and Bishop Gorman has been accredited since 1955 with the NWAC. Re-accreditation is a process of reviewing our institution’s performance, integrity and quality. Because of the importance of re-accreditation, Bishop Gorman started the self-study process of examining our goals, operations and achievements two years ago.

Every aspect of the school was studied and all key stakeholders were involved.

This self-study resulted in a Five Year School Improvement Plan for three Schoolwide Goals.

Goal 1: Develop coordination and articulation among all academic areas. Every academic department will demonstrate student projects that validate this coordination and articulation. A plan has been established to enhance teacher training and create committees to organize, implement and oversee student projects.

Goal 2: Integrate Technology throughout the curriculum to create digital citizens.

Teachers and students over the five year plan will demonstrate the National Education Technology Standards (NETS). Strengthening the technology infrastructure, electronic books, SMARTBOARD technology, and technology boot camps for teachers and students are part of the five year plan for this goal.

Goal 3: To increase the number of incoming freshmen from Catholic feeder schools.

The five year plan has been initiated with the hiring of a full time Admissions Director.

Under her direction additional interaction with the feeder schools is planned.

Tuition Payments

In accordance with the school’s policy, tuition for the 2011-2012 academic year must be paid in full by April 15, 2012. If you have any questions regarding your student’s account, please contact Vanessa Orozco, 702-476-4023.

Registration

Classes are scheduled on a first come first served basis.

Before your child can select courses for the 2012/2013 academic year, the Enrollment Agreement and Tuition Fee Addendum forms must be completed and signed by a parent/guardian. These completed forms along with the $500 registration fee must be turned in to the Finance Department before your students will be scheduled to meet with their counselors.

Financial Aid

Open enrollment for financial aid for the 2012-2013 school year has begun. Log on to www.bishopgorman.org where there is a link to FACTS Grant and Aid Company under the Admissions tab. Submit your application, pay the required fee online and please be aware that you must be verified

by FACTS Grant and Aid before your application can be reviewed by the Tuition Assistance Committee.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Recognized by his peers as a leader for holding substantial educational goals, demonstrating a professional, courteous and respectful attitude throughout the mock trial season and pursuing commitments both academically and socially, Phillip Froehlich ’12 was awarded the Cheryl Kosewicz Memorial Scholarship last February.

This Memorial Scholarship Award began in 2007 as a remembrance to the late Cheryl Kosewicz who throughout her life, had committed herself to assisting the children of Clark County in her legal capacity volunteering with high school mock trial teams as a coach and as a judge in competitions.

The Freshman Pride program is in its annual time of transition.

While most of the Class of 2015 has adjusted to life as a high school student, the Class of 2016 is just registering now for summer school classes and getting ready for summer work! As the freshman dean, I sometimes have to wear two hats. This would be one such occasion!

I would first like to congratulate the following students who have been named Freshman of the Week during this second semester: Alex Russell, Angelina Diaz, Jayden Yeoman, Jana Sayson, Taylor Ellis, Jenna Mikulich, Hannah Rogers, and Evan Link. Most of these students have received multiple nominations this year and are very deserving of this award, representing their class as well as all of Bishop Gorman, in a positive light.

Next, I would like to congratulate all of those who were accepted into the Class of 2016 at Bishop Gorman. As the freshman dean, I am encouraging students in the class to think of a slogan for their class t-shirt. (For example: last year’s was “Class of ’15…Watch us beam”) Please submit your ideas to Dean Anderson at ianderson@bishopgorman.org.

f you’ve walked down the 300 hall lately, you may wonder what you smell. About 40 cats were being dissected in Honors Human Physiology recently. Students were required to dissect various internal organs, as well as muscles, paying close attention to their origins and insertions.

Squeamish students were immediately transformed into scientists, eager to discover as much as possible about the cats. Cats were studied because of their similar musculature to that of humans.

T

he Equestrian Club took a tour of Desert Pines Equine Medical & Surgical Center on Thursday March 1.

They were able to see the treatment room, surgery room and ICU where there were two horses: one with a broken leg that had surgery and a mare and foal. The mare was sick and needed IV meds.

They saw the x-ray and ultrasound room along with actual x-rays and ultrasound images. They also saw the outside stalls for less severe cases. Dr. Boeche showed them how her vet truck works when she has to go on calls to ranches. She gave the students advice about college and who to contact if they want to volunteer at the hospital.

College Decisions: Many of you are starting to receive decisions from the colleges to which you are applying. As you receive this information, please update your Naviance Family Connection account. Were you admitted, denied or waitlisted?

Inquiring minds need to know!!! This information remains confidential so please don’t hesitate to share. Admission decisions from each of the colleges you have applied to need to be recorded in order to pick up your cap and gown in May. Scholarship Information: Many colleges will include scholarship information in their admission letters. Some will send this information separately. Regardless of how you receive the information, please make a copy of your scholarship letter and give it to Mrs. Burford in Student Services.

Scholarship information is listed in the graduation program and we want to make sure that you get recognition for the scholarship you receive. You do not have to attend the school offering the scholarship in order for the information to appear in the graduation program. We include college related scholarship as well as outside scholarship information so please bring us a copy of everything you receive.

Juniors

Now is the time to start thinking about taking your standardized tests for college. We encourage students to take both tests. The colleges will accept either score. So good luck and check out the websites for registration dates and test prep. http://sat.collegeboard.com/home http://actstudent.org

Course Registration

Course registration for 2012-13 school year is winding down. In order for registration to take place, two items MUST be completed.

1. All forms and the registration fee of $500 are due to the Finance Department.

2. Service hours should be completed as follows: a. Freshmen: a minimum of 12.5 hours b. Sophomores: a minimum of 37.5 hours c. Juniors: a minimum of 62.5 hours The counselor will send for each student to register. Please make sure to be on time and prepared! The course registration guide is available online on the school website at www.bishopgorman.org and Edline. Parents are encouraged to go online with their students and review the content of the courses and the prerequisites necessary for each class.

Senior Trip

Students depart by bus on May 25, 2012 for the BGHS sponsored senior trip to Disneyland and return the morning of May 26, 2012. Total cost is $90.00 per student which includes transportation, admission to the park, all rides and entertainment at the park. The date to place a deposit has passed and your spot on the trip may only be solidified if payment in full is made between now and May 4th before space fills up. We will not guarantee any spots and they are available on a first come first serve basis. This senior trip is NOT mandatory. See the Bishop Gorman website for further information.

Sophomore Ring Mass

The sophomore ring mass will be held at 5:00pm on Sunday, May 6th in the Bishop Gorman Chapel. Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in and find a seat. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Cannella in the Activities Office at mcannella@bishopgorman.org

Basketball Updates

The Women’s Basketball team had another successful season this year advancing to the Sunset Zone Championship.

The Gaels went undefeated in the Sunset Southwest League. Zhane Dikes ’12 (above) and April Rivers ’13 (left) were both named to the All-State team.

The Men’s Basketball team finished the season playing as well as any team in the country, winning their last fourteen games and their five playoff games by an average of 35 points. At the State Tournament in Reno, Bishop Gorman ran through Douglas in the semi-finals 73-38 and then beat northern champion Hug by a score of 96-51 in the finals. The Gaels finished the season 28-4 and will finish the season ranked in the top 10 in the country.

Congratulations to seniors Rosco Allen, Ben Carter, Nick Gianakoulias, Mishima Gray, Gio Guzman, Demetris Morant, Shabazz Muhammad, Ronnie Stanley and Kyle Stockton.

Awards The Women’s Soccer team pulled off a rare accomplishment this year, winning both the academic and regular State Championships in the same season! On the field, the Gaels were dominant in the State Tournament beating Green Valley 4-0 to capture their first title in 11 years. A special congratulations to Seniors Allie Arguello ’12, Brielle Crovetti ’12, Sierra Doehrmann ’12, Samantha Higgins ’12, Kylie Kircher ’12, Mia Moore ’12, Angelica Pawlowski ’12, Alexandra Sorrentino ’12, Chloe Tucker ’12, and Hayley Wingender ’12.

Bishop Gorman senior Shabazz Muhammad ’12 has been racking up the individual post-season basketball awards.

So far, he has been named Sunset Southwest League MVP, Sunset Regional MVP, Las Vegas Review Journal State Player of the Year, the Naismith High School Boy’s National Player of the Year and the Morgan Wooten McDonald’s National Player of the Year.

In addition, seniors Gio Guzman ’12, Demetris Morant ’12, Ronnie Stanley ’12, Ben Carter ’12 and Rosco Allen ’12 received recognition for their accomplishments on the court and were named to the Sunset Southwest All-League team. Also together with Ben Carter, and Demetris Morant, Rosco Allen was named to the All-State Team. Rosco was also named to the Sunset Division team.
