The winter sports season came to a close at the Orleans Arena on Friday, March 1. The men’s basketball team won its 8th straight Men’s Basketball State Championship by beating rival, Clark High School, for the 4th time this season and the 11th time in 3 years. The Lady Gaels lost in the finals of the State Championship to Centennial, but battled until the end, taking home the State Runner-Up trophy as Nevada’s 2nd Best Team of 2019.
During the men’s season, the team: • Won the prestigious Tarkanian Classic Tournament for the 2nd year in a row • Were undefeated in the Desert Southwest League • Won the Desert Regional Tournament; the Las Vegas City Championship; and finally, the State Championship The team also gained national attention and is currently ranked in the Top 25 in the country in almost every poll including 17th by Max Preps. The Gaels were led all year by starters Zaon Collins '21, Noah Taitz '20, Will McClendon '21, Chance Michels '19, and Isaiah Cottrell '20. They also got big contributions in the playoffs from Mwani Wilkinson '20 and Max Allen '22.

GaelBots Go To State The Robotics Club recently finished the 2018-2019 VEX Robotics Competition season. In the VEX Robotics Competition, teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. Classroom STEM concepts are put to the test as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communications, and more. The BGHS Robotics Club members fielded two robots, competed in 6 tournaments (winning one Judge’s Award), and attended the Nevada State VRC High School Championship recently held at Coronado High School.

Graduation Events Schedule Graduation Practice: May 1 at 9:30 a.m. (Gaels Period) in the BGHS Aux. Gym. We will review procession, seating,
and

procedure
for
receiving your diploma. We will also cover the senior class trip itinerary and rules. Senior BBQ: May 3 at 10:25 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in both Gyms. Seniors are dismissed at 1:00 p.m. Pick up Cap & Gown: May 7, during Gaels Period and both lunches outside of Campus Store. Senior Trip to Disneyland: May 10 and 11. All seniors attending the class trip will meet in the gym on May 10 to load the bus. Senior Final Exams: May 13 & 14. Please see weekly schedule for specific dates and times.
Academic Awards Night: May 14 at 6:00pm in the BGHS Gym. This is a significant evening for students, their families and friends. This formal presentation will include the announcement of scholarships, academic .awards and a speech by the salutatorian. Only those students receiving an invitation will be receiving an award(s). Please wear appropriate, modest “dress” clothes. Cap and gown are not to be worn.

Graduation: May 19 at 12:00 noon Thomas & Mack (4505 S. Maryland Parkway – cross streets are Tropicana & Paradise). Seniors should arrive at the Thomas & Mack by 11:15am, enter through the side loading bay door on the southeast side (closest to the Cox Pavilion) to put on their caps/gowns and line up by 11:30am.

In accordance with the school’s policy, tuition for the 2018-2019 academic year must be paid in full by May 15, 2019. Please be aware that transcripts and grades cannot be released until your student’s account is current. A Case of Whodunit? A Cross-Curricular Project
BGHS Wins Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Since 1923, The Awards have identified such writing greats as Capote, Plath, Warhol, and Updike, while they were still teens. Today, over ten million in scholarships are allotted, with over one million works entered in the past five years. Colleges and Universities view a gold key winner as a high achievement. Since we began entering these contests, nearly a dozen years ago, our win percentages, including The Voice of America and Best in Show prizes awe the judges.
On Monday, March 4th, Mr. Tracy Goode, Assistant Principal for Discipline, was found "dead" in the courtyard from apparent blunt force trauma. Students in Ms. DeJoria’s Honors Human Physiology classes will investigate this horrific crime using forensic evidence such as fingerprints, hair fibers, clothing fibers, and blood evidence. This cross-currricular
project
involves
the
Broadcast Journalism and Photography classes as well. Stay tuned to find out who committed this unthinkable crime!
This year, 24 pieces (in addition to Art winners) earned honorable mention in writing. Twenty five (in addition to the Art winners) were awarded silver keys. In total, seven writing pieces earned gold key awards and will move on to Nationals this spring in New York City. Garaventa Center Essay Contest Congratulations to Christopher Karo '20 on winning a $250 Honorable Mention Award through an essay contest sponsored by the Garaventa Center for Catholic Intellectual Life and American Culture at the University of Portland. This year's topic was What If My Classes Talked to Each Other? This contest is open to students in their Junior year only, so current sophomores will be eligible next year. Two Top Prizes and three Honorable Mention Awards were presented. Authors of the Top two essays each received $500 and each Honorable Mention $250.
GaelBots cont. Our robots finished with rankings of 21 and 34 out of 35 teams. It was the first showing of the GaelBots at the State Championship in 3 years and the team was delighted to be there! Although tired at the end of the day, everyone left with a sense of accomplishment and purpose, knowing they made a difference in the lives of the residents.
As usual, Mr. John Goertemiller organized a group of BGHS students to volunteer at Three Square! We appreciate their efforts and taking the time to help families who are food insecure and hungry in our community! Way to go Gaels!

Scholarship information is listed in the graduation program and we want to ensure you are recognized for the scholarships you have earned. It is not necessary for you to attend the school which has offered the scholarship in order for the information to appear in the graduation program. We include college related scholarship awards as well as outside scholarship information, so please turn in a copy of everything you receive.

Athletic News Spring Sports The spring sports season is now underway. Support your Gaels' baseball, men's golf, lacrosse, softball, swimming/diving, track & field, and men's volleyball as they are all gearing up for a great season! Check back for updates on these sports in the next issue. Go Gaels!
Lady Gaels The Lady Gaels had a bounce back year under Head Coach Kevin Nixon. The Gaels competed in several out of state and in state battles all year before winning the Desert Region Tournament with a tough victory over Desert Oasis. The team came up short against Centennial in the State Championship game, but they had a great season. Seniors on the team included: Caira Young, Shaira Young, Georgia Ohiaeri, Maleah Turner, Olivia Smith, Alexis Kruljac, and Tierney Holcombe.

Navigating the world of Social Media By Jimmy Gleich '01 There is no denying it, Social Media is here to stay. As a parent, it cannot be easy to keep up with all the terms and trends that exist out there. With so many good and bad things that live in the digital world, how do you make sense of it all? Educating yourself on social media trends can be the best defense against issues that arise in the lives of our teens. Luckily there are places you can go to learn the terms, the trends and find out what every parent should know. In the digital age all people leave a footprint that can come back to haunt them as they get older. Students need to understand that the repercussions of mistakes made on social media can really influence their futures. Ninety percent (90%) of teenagers have at least one social media platform on their device. Thirty percent (30%) of teens admit they have been bullied via social media. Common Sense Media, (www.commonsensemedia.org) is a website where parents can personalize social media information based upon the age of your student. The answers to any question can be found within their site. • What exactly is Snapchat? • What are some apps you should be leery of?

Course registration for the 2019-2020 school year is under way. In preparation for your child’s registration appointment, we encourage parents and students to discuss their course selection in advance. You can view the course descriptions through the online Course Guide on the school website under the “Academics” tab and then click the “Academic Requirements” link. Each student will have a scheduled appointment with their school counselor to discuss their course selection and select the most appropriate courses. Students do not need to request the appointment with their counselor. Please keep in mind that class availability is on a first come, first served basis. Registration letters were sent out at the end of February. Prior to students being scheduled for registration appointments, they must submit their enrollment agreement online. No fees are due prior to registration; simply submit the aforementioned form online. The registration fee will be billed in July.
