2016 Division 4A Nevada State Champions!! The Bishop Gorman Women’s Volleyball Team had an amazing season and captured the school’s first ever Volleyball State Championship under longtime coach, Ed Van Meetren. The team played one of the most challenging schedules they have ever played, traveling to tournaments in San Diego and Clovis, CA, as well as competing in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, AZ. The difficult schedule paid off as they qualified for the State Tournament in Reno by beating Shadow Ridge in the Sunset Regional Championship game. In Reno, the team dominated in the two games, beating Douglas High School in the State Semifinal match and Reno High School in the State Finals. The Lady Gaels were led in the championship game by Abbey Archambault ‘17, Alysia Nielson ‘17, Kylie Gibson ‘18, Sydney Lobato ‘18, Hanna Karl ‘20 and Tommi Stockham ‘20. more athletics on page 6

In Honor Of Our Veterans

On November 11 , over 1,400 students, faculty and staff members of Bishop Gorman High School gathered in the House of Glory Gymnasium for a special Veterans’ Day assembly to remember and honor those who have served, continue to serve and protect our country. th

fallen in the line of duty and those who are currently serving were honored with two minutes of silence followed by Amber Waves of Grain played by the Bishop Gorman Orchestra. Concluding the Veterans’ Day assembly, the Worship Choir featuring, Ria Joshi ‘17, sang a rousing rendition of God Bless America.

Administration

O

ne of the tasks required in the WCEA Accreditation was to create or revisit the Integral Student Outcomes, or ISOs of the school. Previously, these outcomes were known as Expected Student Learning Results (ESLRs). The major shift from ESLRs to ISOs was that the outcomes should be more about who the students are as opposed to what they can do. A committee of the faculty received training and engaged in a process to build on the ESLRs to produce our new ISOs. Each month in Sharing the Pride, we will focus on one particular ISO. INTEGRAL STUDENT OUTCOMES A Bishop Gorman graduate is an individual formed as a disciple of Jesus Christ who possesses attributes of the values shared by all GAELS, which are:

E

COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE Strives for exemplary performance; engages in lifelong learning; communicates effectively; and thinks critically, creatively, and collaboratively.

Bishop Gorman seeks to help our students develop this ISO through: • Honors and AP Courses that promote rigorous learning experiences • Over 10 Honor Societies to promote excellence in the multiple intelligences • Summer Institutes for professional experience and lifelong careers • Summer Travel programs to experience other cultures and the world

STANDING STRONG TOGETHER BGHS BAND MARCHES ON!

FROM THE DESK OF

The Marching Band concluded a very successful season in November after participating in the Marching Band Open Series Championships at Sierra Vista High School. The band has made incredible progress this year in both marching and musical elements. We are all very proud of these hard working students!

Art Goes to Zion!

In early November, students in AP Studio: Drawing, AP Studio: 3D, Digital Photo, and Black and White Photo traveled to Zion National Park in Utah to experience God’s artwork - autumn colors and rock formations. This was an incredible opportunity for students to observe nature and create works of art inspired by their observations in nature. While in Zion, students hiked various trails like Emerald Pools and Angel’s Landing, took photographs, created art, and completed observational sketching. As an artist, working outside in nature surrounded by beauty is incomparable.

Students created relief woodblock prints based on their observational drawings completed at the sand plateau of Angel’s Landing. The cool weather, overly friendly chipmunks, and scenic panoramas created a wonderful setting for their initial sketches that would be translated into a print with guidance from local artist, Amanda Palmer. This 5-hour process consisted of 6” by 8” wood panels that were carved by hand after transferring their drawings to the blocks. Proofs were printed and then students could make adjustments before printing on the handmade Japanese printing paper for their final print. Black and White photo students visited local artist Michael Plyler’s dark room and accompanied him to his favorite locations in the valley to discuss process, composition, and various angles. Black and White Photography instructor, Greg Cava, led an evening workshop on star photography, allowing the students to learn a new process or fine-tune their existing technique to create spectacular shots! They enjoyed the evening under the stars watching satellites glide by and sipping hot cocoa!

Books for Baton Rouge

W

hen Mrs. Joanne Andrews, Bishop Gorman Librarian, received a call in September from Gisseli McNamara at Dr. Brendan Johnson’s office about donating some books, little did she know what would happen. With help from Mrs. Susie Portz and Campus Ministry, the Books for Baton Rouge book drive was on its way! BGHS students, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators donated boxes and boxes of books for libraries in the Baton Rouge area that lost their entire collections to massive flood waters. Dr. Johnson, of Nevada Oral and Facial Surgery, has friends in Louisiana who lost their belongings in the floods, and they told him of the plight of the libraries— so he started a book drive. Dr. Johnson’s daughter attended BGHS, and he said that he has always admired BGHS students’ commitment to community service, so he decided to reach out to the Bishop Gorman community for some books. Once they were all ready to go, Dr. Johnson arranged for the shipping of the books. Mrs. Andrews commented, “We are so proud of the Bishop Gorman community for answering the call to start rebuilding Louisiana’s library collections. Our contributions were significant and filled two pickup trucks, inside and out!”

Ms. Miller’s Class

Book Club Students in Ms. Miller’s English 1 Honors and Scholars English 1 classes are exploring reading books suggested for free reading that explore issues many teens struggle with. Students read the books as part of required outside reading and then meet during Gaels period every six weeks to discuss the books. This year, students have read and discussed two books so far: Breathing Underwater by Alex Flinn and Tenderness by Robert Cormier. Fifteen students have become a regular part of the club, while many others read the books on their own. Ms. Miller is encouraged by the amount of interest in free reading done by students, some of whom are self-proclaimed reluctant readers. While students can read any book for outside reading in her class, many students feel inspired to read more after reading one of the suggested titles. This month students are reading two titles for Christmas: Let it Snow by John Green and A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. They will meet during Gaels period right before final exams.

he 2016-2017 fall sports season is coming to a close. Our #1 nationally ranked football team is still in the playoffs, but the rest of the sports are finished, including a dramatic 1st time State Championship for our women’s volleyball team.

ach year Bishop Gorman is invited to attend the Mayors Prayer Breakfast. This event was created by Mayor Oran Gragson after attending a similar event hosted by President Eisenhower in Washington, DC. This event is intended to provide unification among people from different types of business and to celebrate the different faiths of our nation. The following students attended this year’s event on November 17th: Garret Citrin ‘17, Jillian Clark ‘17, Jacob “Cobi” DeLeon ‘17, Trevor Henry ‘17, Jeffrey Hoapili ‘17, Emilie Hong ‘17, Anna Horvath ‘17, CJ Jones ‘18, Rachel Korte ‘17, Kyle Melatti ‘18, Magyre Neville ‘17, Kaitlyn Paez ‘17, Bobbi Rivas ‘17, Steven So ‘17, Angelique Vollmer ‘18, Emerson Wieczorek ‘18. In addition, KnightenGaels, the a cappella singing group, performed True Colors and the Worship Chamber Musicians with soloist Sophia Wilson ‘19, sang God Bless America.

The men’s and women’s cross-country team had another good year, taking the team on successful trips to California and Arizona. They did well in the Sunset Southwest League meets and took several athletes to the Sunset Regional meets. Our men’s and women’s soccer teams had good seasons. Both teams won pre-season tournaments as the men went to Tennessee and won the prestigious Smokey Mountain Cup. The women’s team went to Reno and won the Howell Memorial Classic. Both teams won their League and went into the playoffs with a lot of momentum. In the playoffs, both teams lost heart breakers in the Sunset Regional tournament, ending their seasons. The women’s soccer team was led all year by seniors Arlie Jones ‘17, Tavin Hays ‘17, and Hannah Borgel ‘17. Arlie has committed to play soccer at the University of Southern California and was recently named to the Girl’s High School All-American Game in Raleigh, NC. Tavin has committed to play soccer at Iowa State. Hannah had an amazing 4-year career and set the all-time Bishop Gorman record for goals with 72 and assists with 57. Justin Rasmussen ‘17 led the men’s soccer team all year with 26 goals and 9 assists. He was named Sunset Offensive Player of the Year for the 2nd year in a row. Our women’s golf team won the Sunset Regional Tournament for the 4th straight year. They were undefeated in the Sunset Southwest League and finished 2nd in the two-day State Tournament which was held in Carson City, NV. The team was led by Danielle Oberlander ‘17 and Hunter Pate ‘18, both of whom were named to the All-State Team. The men’s and women’s tennis team both had good years, capturing league titles and advancing to the Sunset Division Finals. Both teams came up a little short in the finals, but had a great deal of individual success. Two of the doubles teams advanced to the State Tournament in Reno. On the men’s side, Lucas Hammond ‘19 and Daniel Kinas ‘17 finished in 3rd place.

In women’s tennis, Emma Figueredo ‘18 and Angelique Friedrich ‘19 won the Nevada State Doubles title with a victory over teams from Palo Verde and Liberty. Our #1 ranked football team is still undefeated and in the thick of the playoffs. Check back next month for Regional and State results as the Gaels continue toward their 8th straight Nevada State Championship and possible 3-Peat National Champions.
