Zion 2017

Artist Workshop with Dilleen Marsh

By Mrs. Lora Feely ’98 While in Zion this past month, the AP Studio students spent a day working with artist Dilleen Marsh who paints landscapes, figures, and conceptual pieces from her southwestern desert home studio. Students walked along the River Trail at the Temple of Sinawava while completing various plein air work. Students sat between the canyon walls while fall leaves danced through the cool air. From blind contour warm-up drawings to observational drawings open to artist interpretation, our students continued to improve their skill. Mediums used included pen, watercolor, and graphite with the subject being selected by each student. Finding yourselves lost in Zion only leads one to actually finding artistic inspiration each time! What a wonderful experience for our budding artists. AP Studio (3D and Drawing), Art Studio, AP Environmental, Digital Photography, and Black and White Photography courses each had students participate in this unique outing. Working once again with the Zion Forever Project was a wonderful Pictured L to R: Rachel Kunzi ’18, Ava Banfer ’18, partnership in Lauren Linderer ’18, (artist)Dilleen Marsh, Jillian furthering each student’s knowledge Briare ’18, Taylor Burkhead ’18, Hope Smith ’18, and Lindsay Busche ’18. of the canyon and its environment. A special thank you to my fellow teachers in making the trip happen: Amy Dawson, Greg Cava, Ian Devlin, and Kevin Calkins. Thank you to Administration for being supportive of this annual educational experience.

Our Music Speaks Volumes! Congratulations to our BGHS Marching Band members who have had quite a season. Since July, these students have been working extremely hard learning not only music technique but marching and visual to help create an outstanding show. Their hard work has paid off as the band finished in the top 3 at all competitions this season. The show incorporated music, visual, and theatrical elements. Also, congratulations to Mr. Neuman on being selected to represent Nevada in the upcoming 20th Annual “50 Directors Who Make a Difference” issue of School Band and Orchestra Magazine. It is a prestigious honor to be nominated and be selected by the editorial review committee.

An issue of this magazine will be delivered to all of their subscribers and given to the attendees of The Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in December. Mr. Neuman said “I am very surprised and honored. I have read this issue each year interested in reading what these outstanding educators have to say and gain some inspiration from them. To be a part of this and thought of in the same light means so much.”

Blessing Bags for First Responders

MITE BOX

Mrs. Suzanne Wilson’s 1st period class celebrate their first Mite Box win of the year!!

The BGHS community donated many items to show their gratitude for the first responders.

Then many were up at a 6:30 a.m. briefing at the Enterprise Area Command Police Station to present Blessing Bags donated by our Bishop Gorman families to honor first responders in the Las Vegas community.

Gaels in the community Brayden Ristow ’21, had a fun time participating in the Light The Night Walk to benefit Leukemia and Lymphoma research!

Firemen from Station #11 graciously received Blessing Bags from the Bishop Gorman community. They appreciated our kindness and support so very much!

Blessing Bags were also delivered to the Coroner’s office to brighten the day of people who have worked non-stop since October 1st. They were surprised and delighted by this act of kindness. Our Gorman family has been a big support to the Las Vegas community and it has truly been appreciated.

Counselor’s Corner

More than 330 BGHS students, family members, faculty, staff, and administrators came together once again to form Team “BGHS Walks the Walk” in the annual Las Vegas Walk to End Alzheimer’s held at Town Square on October 28, 2017. For the past 12 years, the BGHS community has participated in this annual autumn event, one that has become a school tradition. BGHS Librarian Joanne Andrews and Assistant Librarian Margaret Foy serve as Team BGHS co-captains. “Mrs. Andrews and I are so proud of and grateful to our entire BGHS family—but especially our students,” said Ms. Foy. Mrs. Andrews expressed her appreciation for the students’ efforts in donating to and promoting the Walk, and for their strong, enthusiastic presence at the Walk. “Unfortunately, we have seen an increasing number of our BGHS students and their families impacted by this debilitating disease,” she said. “Our students are seeing the effects of Alzheimer’s and other dementias on those afflicted, and the toll it takes on families,” she added. “These young people understand how important it is to find a cure for Alzheimer’s.” Channel 8’s Sherry Swensk once again served as MC for the Walk’s opening ceremony and gave a big shout out to Bishop Gorman High School, and later thanked Ms. Foy and Mrs. Andrews for the school’s ongoing support.

A week later, the two teams would meet again in the state finals after Bishop Gorman beat Bishop Manogue in straight sets in the semi-finals. The Match went back and forth until Shadow Ridge finally beat the Gaels in the 5th set to claim the State Championship. It was a great year for the team even though they fell just a little short of their state championship goal.

he 32nd Annual Bishop Gorman Golf Classic was held on Thursday, November 2nd at Spanish Trail Country Club and was most certainly one for the books! A special addition to this year’s tournament was our “Helicopter Ball Drop”. Players were able to buy numbered golf balls which were taken up 200 feet in the air and dropped over a green by Maverick Helicopters. The first three balls to land in the hole or that were closest-to-the-pin, won! Money raised from the Golf Classic supports our students and school tuition assistance program.

Rafael Framers, Trimark, Aloha Orthodontics, Yesco, Intershine Graphics, Maverick Helicopters, Jostens - Lance & Roxanne Shoen, and 7-UP.
