Freshman Roman Jimenez is a great example of how true this quote can be as he is one step closer to achieving his career goal of someday becoming the CEO of Walt Disney World! Roman is one of only 100 students nation-wide to have been chosen to attend a four-day Disney Dreamers Academy at Disney World in Florida, March 21-24, 2019.

Roman had heard about this opportunity when he was in 6th grade, but had to wait a few years to submit his application since it is open only to freshmen. While at the academy, Roman will participate in career-oriented workshops and receive lessons in communication techniques, leadership skills, and network strategies. The goal of this academy is to help students evaluate their dreams and be inspired by professionals to help make their dreams a reality. Congratulations Roman!

Updates from the

Hammes Campus Store

Dear Parents: As most of you know, we introduced a new uniform pant/short this fall in our campus store. This year, students were allowed to wear the khaki bottoms as well as the new grey ones. Please note that for the 2019-2020 school year only grey shorts/pants will be permitted as part of our approved uniform.

The ladies' shorts/pants are custom-made and only sold at the Hammes Campus Store and the BG school website. The men’s uniform shorts/pants are Dickies brand and available in the Hammes Campus Store and/or anywhere that sells Dickies brand.

Ladies' shorts are $28, and ladies' pants are $32 Men’s shorts are $26, and men’s pants are $32 Starting in the fall, ALL students must wear the GREY bottoms.

At the end of the year Campus Ministry will collect used uniforms, as they have in the past, and will donate the khakis to non-profit organizations.

Finance Dept. News REGISTRATION INFORMATION FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR WILL BE MAILED IN FEBRUARY. TUITION ASSISTANCE: All applications must be submitted to FACTS, which can be accessed through the BGHS website: WWW.BISHOPGORMAN.ORG/TUITION Applications are still being accepted for tuition assistance. Remember, awards are granted on a first come, first serve basis so apply promptly! Returning families must re-apply for tuition assistance each year.

Please be aware that you must be verified by FACTS for your application to be reviewed by the Bishop Gorman Tuition Assistance Committee. Incoming freshmen who are verified on or before February 15, 2019, and reviewed will receive a notification of award by mail in early March. All returning students that have been verified and reviewed will receive notification of awards by mail in April.

TruFusion Contributes To The Cause

We were excited to include Tru Fusion in our athletic shoe drive for Africa! Hundreds and hundreds of used and/or new sneakers were dropped off at two different locations to be sent to Ghana to provide shoes for the thousands who have none. A big thank you to Stevi Portz, for taking this wonderful cause to TruFusion and getting it off the ground!

Academic Advisors ACT TESTING INFORMATION FOR JUNIORS All juniors will be taking the ACT on the Bishop Gorman campus on Tuesday, April 2, 2019. Your son/daughter will be automatically registered for this test and no further action is required. Bishop Gorman High School is paying for the administration of this exam and there is no cost to families.

ACT Test Prep In conjunction with offering the ACT, Bishop Gorman is hosting an ACT preparation bootcamp taught by Ryan Fitzgibbons, owner of Tutors Across America.

The class will consist of 20 hours of classroom instruction and 2 full proctored formal ACT exams. The cost is $299, but Gorman students can use the coupon code GOGAELS for a discounted rate of $199. This camp is offered only to Bishop Gorman High School juniors and will be held on our campus.

Counselor's Corner Course Registration

Course registration for the 2019-2020 school-year will begin in March. Each student will select their classes with their school counselor. The counseling department suggests taking the time to review the course guide, available at www.bishopgorman.org, with your son/daughter and discuss the courses that would best suit them. Please check your mailbox for registration materials beginning in late February.

Athletic News A Winning Season

Congratulations to Tommi Stockham '20 on being named 2018 Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year!

Tommi is the first Bishop Gorman volleyball player to receive this recognition. Way to go Tommi!

Bishop Gorman had one of its best fall seasons in school history as the girls' soccer team and girls' volleyball teams had their best teams of all time. Both finished their dominant season with a State Championship and a National Ranking. It was a “Decade of Dominance” for the Gaels football team as they won their 10th Nevada State Championship in a row with a convincing 69-26 win against Bishop Manogue at Sam Boyd Stadium.

The winter sports teams have all competed in tournaments and are now in league play. The bowling teams are doing a great job and gearing up for the playoffs under first year coach, Tara Maguinness.

The wrestling program has competed in several tournaments and has done well in league play. With a young squad, look for the Wrestling Gaels to continue to improve in the next few years.

The 7th annual Ta rka n i a n Basketball Tournament took place Dec. 18-22, 2018. The National event included about 100 boys teams and 50 girls teams. On the boy’s side, the Gaels won the event for the 2nd year in a row with a dominant performance in the Championship against Rancho Christian. Zaon Collins '21 and Noah Taitz '20 were named the Co-Tournament MVP’s and Will McClendon '21, Isaiah Cottrell '20, and Chance Michels '19 were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The women’s basketball team has competed in several tournaments and is currently in league play led by seniors Olivia Smith, Georgia Ohiaeri, Caira and Shaira Young, Maeah Turner, Tierney Holcombe, and Alexa Kruljac.

The men’s basketball team has had a busy season so far, traveling around the US and competing against some of the best teams in the country. They kicked off the season with the FIRST EVER home basketball game on ESPN. The Gaels took on the Coronado Cougars on national television in front of a packed house.

The G-Block was out in full force and did an amazing job cheering the team on to an 88-75 victory. In addition to winning the Tarkanian Classic with a dominant performance against previously unbeaten and nationally ranked Rancho Christian (see left), some of their more impressive wins came over Findlay Prep 59-55 at the South Point Arena and Chino Hills (CA) 82-57 in the Nike Extravaganza.

Watch for the Gaels in the playoffs as they compete for their 8th straight State Championship.

Bishop Gorman began a flag football team this year and has been competing against other Las Vegas area teams. With close to 40 girls participating, Coach Colt Goodman is excited about the future of the Lady Gaels Flag Football Team.

SENIOR TRIP DISNEYLAND Friday, May 10, 2019 Total cost is $160 per student which includes transportation, admission to the park, all rides and entertainment at the park. Students will need to purchase their own food.

Ticket sales begin on Monday, February 25, 2019, on a first come first serve basis. Payments can be made in two equal parts if the first payment is in by Friday, March 29, 2019. The final payment is due by Monday, April 29, 2019.

Cash or check (made out to Bishop Gorman) only.

Service hours must be completed and verified to reserve your spot. Students depart from Bishop Gorman the morning of Friday, May 10, 2019 and return the following morning. More details will be announced as the event gets closer.

Honoring the Gaels Football Team The Las Vegas City Council recognized the Bishop Gorman High School Varsity Football Team at the January 16, 2019, City Council meeting. Councilman Cedric Crear '87, honored the Gaels for winning the 2018 NIAA 4A State Championship. It is our 10th straight State Championship and 17th overall. In addition, the football program was recognized as the National Champions in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Great job Gaels!

On Saturday, January 12, 2019, the men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted a clinic in the House of Glory for kids who are part of the Miracle League program. Miracle League traditionally offers the opportunity to those with cognitive or physical challenges to play baseball in a safe and nurturing environment. Bishop Gorman students are regular volunteers at the park for their baseball games and this offered the Miracle League kids a way to try something new in a supportive environment! Both the Miracle League kids and the BGHS students had a great time playing together and learning from each other. Then, on January 16, 2019, all the Miracle League kids were invited back as special guests for the game against Spring Valley.

They were announced as part of the starting lineup and even got to sit on the bench. What an amazing experience for all involved!

PLEASE NOTE: In order to improve continuity of instruction as well as facilitate greater classroom community, students who are taking summer Theology

classes in the freshman and sophomore curriculum must enroll for four total weeks. This will allow the students to complete the entire year’s curriculum (two semesters) in the summer. To allow for flexibility with vacations and camps, students may complete this sequence in Sessions 1&2 OR 2&3 OR 1&3.

Scholarship Information

Many colleges will include scholarship information in their admission letters.

Some will send this information separately.

Regardless of how you receive the information, please: • Make a copy of your scholarship letter and give it to Mrs. Conteduca in Student Services or Mr. Pietranton in the Counseling Department.

• Scholarship information is listed in the graduation program and we want to ensure you get the recognition for the scholarships you have earned.

• You do not have to attend the school which offered you the scholarship in order for the information to appear in the graduation program.

Spelling Bee, cont.

In its 31st year, the Marietta Tiberti Memorial Catholic Schools Spelling Bee included 46 competitors—from grades five through eight—from each Catholic elementary school in the Valley.

• The amount of individual scholarships and grants ALWAYS remains confidential.

While we do publish the total amount of scholarships offered to the entire senior class – the class of 2018 was awarded more than $30 million dollars in scholarships and grants – individual amounts are never made public.

• The deadline is April 26, 2019, for inclusion in the graduation program.
