Tribeca: Where Vegas Meets New York

Tenasie Bowe- Belmont University-Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business, Major: Music Business.

By Joanne Andrews, Librarian Bishop Gorman High School faculty members possess many talents and diverse experience that complement their teaching. This is certainly true of Broadcast Media instructor Joe Barbara, who produced, along with others, the short film Migraine, which made its world premiere in April at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Hannah Cava- University of Evansville, Major: Stage Management. Elizabeth Charles- University of Notre Dame, Major: Vocal Performance. Krystina Kinney- University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Major: Theatre Arts with a concentration in Stage and Screen Acting.

By night, Barbara performs eight shows a week as one of the cast members of Jersey Boys. By day, he is either at BGHS or running to rehearsal from a busy day on campus. From the live “BGTV” broadcast on Monday mornings, to coordinating equipment, student reporters and producers for “packages” that student shoot and edit, Barbara, it would seem, hardly has time to produce a film.

Rachael Korbel-Oregon State University, Major: Pre-Apparel Design, Minor: Business. Courtney McGowan- Wagner College, Major: Theatre Arts with a concentration in Performance. Paige Pensivy- California Lutheran University, Major: Theatre Arts and Education. Alexandra Porterfield- Fordham University at Lincoln CenterNew York City, Major: Theatre with a concentration in Performance.

In his teaching, Barbara tries to use all of his experiences, to give students “a flavor of what it’s really like to actually make TV and film happen.” He often recalls the life of a production assistant when teaching his BGHS Broadcast Media class, and his experiences help him relate to his students.

Alexandra Streuber- Roosevelt University: Chicago College of Performing Arts, Major: Acting.

freshman OF THE WEEK It is time to close out the freshman year of the class of 2015. It has simply flown by and went very well. It is my belief that this class will be highly successful in the years to come. Not only have they excelled academically and athletically, but they have also exhibited the characteristics we strive for with the PRIDE program: Preparedness, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Effort. More than 85% of the class received at least one PRIDE nomination and postcard this year. That’s a very high percentage! I hope their effort continues on to the sophomore years. Congratulations to all of those who were named Freshman of the Week. Second semester winners were:

01/06 Sean Kenny Cooper McColeman 02/03 Alex Russell Angelina Diaz 02/10 Jayden Yeoman 02/17 Jana Sayson Taylor Ellis 02/24 Jenna Mikulich

04/13 Ally Bustos 03/02 Hannah Rogers Evan Link Anthony Lalli 03/09 Anita Singh 04/20 Carrie Keller Jaiden Zimmer 03/16 Connor Buckley Allie Wahlquist Savannah Schmidt 04/27 Ryan Wofford 03/30 Blake Sperduti Erica Korbel

Welcome to the Class of 2016 Are you excited? We are! The LINK leaders have begun meeting already for the orientation in August. Freshman Orientation Days are August 16 – 17 and are mandatory school days. All of us are waiting anxiously for your arrival. Hopefully you are planning ahead as well to get your high school career off to a great start. There are a few things that you should do this summer to prepare for high school. First of all, I hope that you have enrolled in a summer school class. This is the best way for you to learn the lay of

the school ahead of time, as well as start earning credits. Next, be sure that you do your summer reading. Yes, you will be tested when classes start. Also, those of you who have summer work to complete need to bring it to your teacher on the first day of classes. Remember, order your books early to insure that you get them on time. We do not loan books and all of your work is due when the teacher assigns. If you do not have your books on time, you will be copying a friend’s materials until you get them! That makes your adjustment to high school even more difficult.

family service day On Saturday, April 28th, the Bishop Gorman community reached out to assist the St. Therese Center in Henderson with a beautification project of their Retreat Center. Equipped with shovels, picks and rakes, over 100 students, parents and staff planted trees, flowers, shrubs, transferred dirt and rock, and created pathways for the enjoyment of those who come to the Retreat Center. This was the fourth gathering of the Gaels give H.O.P.E. project! Look for more opportunities to make the Las Vegas community a better place with our community in the Fall!

Finally, be sure to visit our campus store early to get your pants and shirts as well as other items, including your freshman binders. If you follow these tips, you should have a successful start to high school. So once again, let me say welcome. Enjoy your summer break, and I will see you in full dress code on August 16th.

Administrators are on campus throughout the summer should you require immediate assistance, or you can contact the counseling secretary at 476-4045. SCHEDULE CHANGES: We are pleased to say it is another record breaking year for enrollment. With that being said, we need to mention a couple things: At this time there will be NO schedule changes and/or teacher requests! The only time a change will be able to be made is if there is a mistake or you need a level change. For example, if you took a summer school course and it is listed on your fall course list or if you’re dropping a level. The master schedule is complete and the classes are very full. Quote of the Month: “Every day do something that will inch you closer to a better tomorrow.” Doug Firebaugh

I have finished my junior year. What can I do over the summer to prepare for the college application process? Applying to college is exciting… and time consuming. Starting early is a wonderful way to make the process enjoyable. Here are some items to review over the summer before your senior year: 1) If you have not taken the ACT or SAT test, or plan to take either test again, review the test date options and decide which date(s) work for you. 2) If you are travelling over the summer, consider visiting a college or two near your destination. Even if the closest college is one you don’t think you will consider, touring various types of institutions (large, small, private, public) will help you to narrow down your options. 3) Reflect on your high school experience thus far and add to or begin your resume. You can update the resume on your Naviance Family Connection page and use this information when completing your college applications. 4) Research what majors you want to consider and start to build a list of possible colleges. Naviance Family Connection has tools to help you determine your interests and research your options. 5) Start writing your essay. See the Essay section of the 2012/2013 College Planner/Calendar to help you jumpstart the process!

Classroom Notes Honors Human Physiology - CSI Style On Monday, April 16th, students in Mrs. DeJoria’s Honors Human Physiology classes were surprised to be part of a staged murder investigation. For two weeks, fingerprints, hair fibers, clothing fibers, and blood evidence were processed in order to solve the homicide of Assistant Principal, Mr. Goode. Student investigative teams brought justice to campus when science teacher, Mr. Devlin was charged with his murder. All in the name of science, of course! 5

A Taste of Southern Hospitality Southern Hospitality!

It was all about the Southern Hospitality this year at Passport, our annual wine tasting event! The party got started right away as over 500 guests were treated to a live performance by students David Martinez ’13 and Ralph Mendez ’14 while emcee, Monique Hafen ’06, whose roots hail back to Louisiana, charmed the crowd with her warm southern personality. As the night progressed, the Shapiro Project performed some energetic Jazz followed by Modern Science who rocked the night away! Throughout the evening, Wirtz Beverage made sure everyone had something to quench their thirst with over twenty wines, ten beers and Southern Hospitali-tea and Hello Satchmo specialty drinks to enjoy! As usual, the M Resort provided a gorgeous venue and lip-smacking food with a southern flare! This successful night could not have been possible without our gracious sponsors, performers, volunteers, and our fabulous BGHS community! Special thanks to Monique Hafen, M Resort, Wirtz Beverage, Chartwells, Kelley Technologies, Crestron, Ellis Island and Review Journal. Stay tuned to see where Passport 2013 will take us! Thanks Y’all! 6

Good luck to all our graduates who will be competing in athletics in college next year. You have accomplished more than any other class that has ever represented Bishop Gorman or the state of Nevada. Go Gaels!
