Recently, the Model UN team competed at the Las Vegas Model UN Conference at Spring Valley High School. Mateo Portelli '20 and Hayden Aguon '20 took Outstanding Delegate Awards. The team took Best Delegation for the small school division. Additionally, Mateo competed in Round 2 of the Lion’s Club Speech contest and won First Place. He now moves on to two more levels for over $5000 in scholarship prizes. Mateo will also interview for the National Service Award with the National Speech and Debate Association. He is one of only six national finalists for the National Exemplary Student Service Award, recognizing Mateo’s work with the organization Trial by Peers where he serves as a peer attorney for teens who have a misdemeanor charge and must go before a judge. Introduced in 2017, the National Exemplary Student Service Award is given annually to a student who serves their school, community, city, region, or state using skills they honed through speech and debate. Coaches or administrators may nominate a student who upholds the highest standard of service, one of the core tenets of the Association’s Code of Honor, for recognition.
Mock Trial Goes To State The Bishop Gorman Orange Mock Trial team competed in the Regional Mock Trial Competition on Saturday, February 9th and they finished in 1st place. Rachel Raps '19 won the one and only Best Attorney Award. Moderator, Mr. Rob Crisp said "I'm so proud of my students. The students make it look easy, but Mock Trial is far from easy. They work tirelessly putting in over 10 hours of practice a week. They truly are the hardest working group of students I have ever had the pleasure to advise." In the middle of March, the team is off to Reno to compete for the State Championship. Best of luck Gaels!

This was the first time that two students from the same class received the award (Caroline Edgeworth and Wyatt Rutledge) Also, this was the first time this year that a student received the award a second time (Wyatt Rutledge) And to top it off, this was the first time in ten years that a student won in back to back weeks (Wyatt Rutledge was nominated 5 times). Congratulations to both of these outstanding students!

In addition, Selin has four other pieces for which she received Gold Medals this year. Last year, Selin was awarded the same American Visions Award for her painting “Sticky Fingers” which also won a National Gold. Spotlight on Service
O
Julia Sanman '19
ne of the goals with the Christian Service program is to attempt to expose students to a real variety of service opportunities so they can truly find their passion. Often a student will continue serving long after their required hours when they have found what moves them. Julia Sanman '19, is a shining example of someone who connected with a particular service and has continued to pursue it. Julia leads other students, on a regular basis, in creating plastic mats out of recycled plastic to give to the homeless. They are light, compact, and protect an individual from the elements. In Julia's words...
"I started making mats my freshman year, taking over the service project for a graduated senior who originally started it. The mats are made out of recycled plastic bags using a wooden loom about six and a half feet tall and three feet wide. I’ve made about twelve mats in total, each one taking ten to twelve hours total. I generally have about five to ten students helping me each week, earning them service hours. The mats are then given to the homeless through Shine A Light, since the organization that Shine A Light helps goes into the tunnels to distribute both the mats and the products of Shine A Light’s monthly service projects. Service has grown into such a passion of mine because of the time I’ve spent making mats, since it’s such a small yet beneficial way to help my community. I’ve seen the impact that these mats have made in the lives of those living in the tunnels, and I hope that this project continues to grow even after I graduate." We thank Julia for being a wonderful example to others and following her passion!
Boys Town Honors BGHS On January 31, Mrs. Martinez, Bro. Robertson, Jashawn Taylor '19 and Mateo Portelli '20, represented Bishop Gorman at an awards ceremony held at Boys Town of Nevada where Bishop Gorman received the Volunteer Group of the Year honor. Jashawn has volunteered at events with Boys Town. Mateo represented our Mathew 25 Board as we were also recognized for the many emergency requests we have funded to clients of Boys Town over the years. In addition, Zach Flannery '19 and Freddy Aldana '21 volunteered at the event as food servers to help the event run smoothly. Donna Pacella, Development Director for Boys Town, noted that Bishop Gorman students are always ready and willing to help whenever called upon and are valued partners with Boys Town in so many ways.

Theology Honor Society Bishop Gorman High School is the second Catholic High School in the United States to provide a Theology Honor Society for students. Begun in 2014 and dedicated to St. Thomas Aquinas, the great theologian, Aquinas Society members meet to enhance the Catholic identity of the campus and student body through prayer, service and leadership. For Catholic Schools Week 2019, each member of the Society took to heart the needs of the students and faculties of the Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Las Vegas, the seminarians for the Diocese, and the work of the Department of Education for the NCCB. Members met during Catholic Schools Week to celebrate our Catholic Schools and to dedicate themselves to prayer for others. The Aquinas Society is open to juniors and seniors with an eligible GPA and an interest in witnessing to the Catholic Identity of BGHS through prayer, worship and service leadership.

Athletic News 2018-2019 Winter Sports The 2018-2019 Winter Sports are winding down their seasons. The wrestling and bowling teams have finished, and the men’s and women’s basketball teams are currently in the playoffs. Our cheer team, band, and dance team have been performing all year and supporting all of our sports. Bishop Gorman had a special 2018-2019 year as we participated in our first season of NIAA sanctioned women’s flag football. With almost 40 girls competing on the team, Coach Colt Goodman guided the team to a successful inaugural season. With the excitement of the first season, flag football looks to have a bright future here at Bishop Gorman. Our men’s and women’s basketball teams are currently competing in the Desert Regional Tournament. Check back next month for playoff results. The men’s team is currently ranked #1 in the State and the Lady Gaels begin the playoffs ranked #2 in the State. Each year, 24 of the top players from across the country are chosen to play in the prestigious McDonald’s All American game. This year, although we did not have anyone chosen for the game, Chance Michels '19, Olivia Smith '19, and Georgia Ohiaeri '19 were nominated for the game and received certificates from the McDonald’s committee.

Brett McEachern '19 and Josh Harris '21 both qualified for the individual Desert Region Tournament. The varsity boys team qualified for Regionals as well. In an intense head to head match, the boys lost against Spring Valley in the first round. Team Captain, Brett McEachern, led the team with a 218, followed by up and coming Austin Flores '21 with a 205. Josh Harris, Brophy Howard '20, and Jamar May '21 also contributed to the team’s final match. It will be hard to lose Brett's experience and leadership as he graduates this year, but the rest of the team is poised and ready to start training for next year’s season. Although they were a young team this year, our wrestling team competed in League play and placed four wrestlers in the State Tournament. Gavin Brenkus '19, Jaiden Romero '20, Jashawn Taylor '19, and Brandon Young '19 all qualified for the State Meet in Winnemucca, NV.

Human Physiology If you’ve walked down the 300 hall lately, you may have wondered what you smell? About 35 cats were being dissected in Honors Human Physiology. Students were required to dissect various internal organs, as well as muscles, paying close attention to their origins and insertions. Squeamish students were immediately transformed into scientists, eager to discover as much as possible about the cats. Cats were studied because of their similar musculature to that of humans.

Winter Wonderland 2019!
ARTfully, cont. It provided Selin a confidence, a creative group of like-minded art students nationwide, and motivated her to pursue Fine Art with enthusiasm. Mrs. Feely '98 said "As her instructor, what has been the most astounding part of Selin’s work this year has been the fact that she has worked in multiple mediums including: oil paint, charcoal, clay with water as a kinetic element, digital drawing, animation, digital photo, and installation/projection pieces. She is truly Bishop Gorman’s renaissance art student and Mr. Greg Cava, Ms. Amy Dawson, and I could not be more blessed to work with her."
The Desert: a dry, hot climate can also get cold, wet and WHITE! A February storm brought some unusual weather for the valley, blanketing the city with heavy clouds and a snow storm that happens about every ten years in Las Vegas. Early in the morning on Thursday, February 21st, snow kept coming down as the Bishop Gorman crew, assisted by Principal Kiefer, swept and salted the walkways to ensure everyone's safety. Throughout the day, pictures of snow angels and snowmen dominated the Instagram and Facebook pages of many students and local families. It was a beautiful sight to see as the mountains surrounding the school, the palm trees, and every rooftop was covered in snow.
