Prom 2013 Starry Night This year’s Prom was held at Red Rock Hotel and Casino on April 6th. Students who attended this Starry Night themed event were treated to a sit down dinner and dessert, dancing, photo booth and a candy wall with lots of goodies to take home.

A special moment during the night was the presentation of our Prom Court and the crowning of our Prom King, Mr. Ryan Gregory '14 and Prom Queen, Ms. Shannon Hale '14.

Bishop Gorman High School 31st Annual Knight of the Gael Parents, alumni and friends gathered at the 31st Annual Knight of the Gael on March 21st to honor Mike '65 & Patty Morrissey. Along with their children Megan '02, letterman Sean Patrick, Erin '06, and over 600 guests, we celebrated a couple who for decades, have been generous donors, tireless volunteers, avid fans and loyal supporters. Their commitment to service can be felt all over the Las Vegas valley through the numerous organizations they help. Bishop Gorman is proud to call them Gaels and

grateful for all they have done to make our community a better place in which to live.

Pick up Cap & Gown • May 15 • during all lunches Campus Store Senior Academic Awards Night • May 20 • 6:30pm BGHS Gym A significant evening for seniors, their families and friends. This formal presentation will include the announcement of scholarships, academic awards and a speech by the salutatorian. Please wear appropriate “dress” clothes. No cap and gown should be worn.

As the year comes to a close, I would like to highlight some of our academic achievements.

First of all I would like to congratulate Lindsey Remark '13 and Juliana Remark '13 for being named the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. We are all very proud of these twin sisters who have challenged themselves academically and achieved at the highest levels. Lindsey will give the valedictory address at Commencement, and Juliana will give the salutatory address at the Senior Awards Night.

Senior BBQ/Yearbook Signing • May 21 • during all lunches Senior Plaza Yearbooks will be distributed and the senior BBQ will be held between 10:15 am -12:00 noon in the Senior Plaza.

Senior Final Exams • May 22 and 23 Finals in periods 4, 5 and 6 will be on Wednesday, May 22. Finals in periods 1, 2 and 3 will be on Thursday, May 23.

Graduation Practice • May 23 • immediately after Finals BGHS Gym We will review procession, seating, and the procedure for receiving your diploma. We will also cover the senior class trip itinerary and rules.

Beginning on May 6, we will begin the annual administration of the Advanced Placement (AP) Exams. The AP Program is truly the “gold standard” of college level coursework taken in high school. Students who pass these exams with a score of 3, 4, or 5 will in most cases earn college credit.

This year we have 286 students testing in 17 subject areas including mathematics, science, English, social studies, and world languages. The AP Program at BGHS has been on a five-year upward trend with 56% of testers passing in 2008 to 64% of testers passing in 2012. Furthermore, the school recorded 52 AP Scholars last year, which requires both taking a minimum of 3 AP Exams and earning minimum average score of 3.0 for all AP Exams. We are expecting our students to continue to succeed in this program.

Baccalaureate Mass • May 31 • 6:30pm • Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer 55 E. Reno Avenue (Las Vegas Blvd. & Reno) Please arrive by 6:00pm. Bring your ironed gown to the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer.

Please wear “dress” clothes under your gowns. No caps should be worn to the Mass. Please try to carpool as there is limited parking available.

Graduation • June 3 • 12:00 noon Orleans Arena (4500 W. Tropicana Ave.) Seniors should arrive at the Orleans Arena by 11:15am, enter through the ticket office door and go directly to the “Gold A” meeting room to put on their caps/gowns and line up by 11:30am.

In order for our students to continue to achieve at such outstanding levels, it is important that everyone remains focused through this very busy final month of the school year. We still have four weeks of school and final exams to complete before summer break. I encourage everyone to “finish strong” so that we can move into the summer break knowing we have given our all.

Sixteen BGHS Latin Students Win Awards On Saturday, April 13, the Bishop Gorman High School Drumline performed for Operation Home Front at the National Guard Armory.

Operation Home Front is an organization dedicated to assisting military families returning from duty. Drumline members that attended this event were Jan Muyot '15, Kyle O’Conner '14, Aidan Coronel '13, Matt Bautista '14, Zach Schauer '15, Jason de Joya '16, Lucy Fu '14, Jaron Bengson '15, Anna Carroll '14, and Chance Creigh '14.

The National Latin Exam is offered under the joint sponsorship of' the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. Categories included grammar, comprehension, mythology, life, history, derivatives, and questions based on a short passage in Latin. The following students received awards:

Recently, our thespians brought a mini version of this famous production to the elementary school students at St Francis de Sales, Our Lady of Las Vegas, St. Joseph, St Anne and St Viator.

The mini musical included the songs You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, The Kite, The Book Report, Suppertime and Happiness as well as some scenes from Peanuts cartoons.

BGHS Serves Our Community On March 17th Bishop Gorman students gathered at Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada ready to serve a delicious St. Patrick's Day lunch to the homeless of Las Vegas. Students served over 1,600 meals to the clients at St. Vincent's Lied Dining Facility. They, along with Mrs. Fertitta, also helped bus tables and clean up the dining room afterward.

Sophomore Ring Mass All Sophomores are invited to attend a very special mass on Sunday, May 5th at 5 p.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Alumni Chapel on the Bishop Gorman campus. Class rings that have been purchased will be blessed and distributed at that Mass. If you did not purchase a class ring, please join us and bring any ring that is special to you‌a sport state ring, your parent’s high school ring, etc. This is a time for you to share with your classmates and we look forward to seeing you there! Haiku Poetry Zen Buddhism, one of the most popular forms of Buddhism in the West, recently was the topic in Mrs. Healy's World Religions class. As an introduction to the religion, students reviewed the construction of a Haiku poem (consisting of three lines of 5 syllables, 7 syllables and 5 syllables). Mrs. Healy asked her class of seniors to contemplate on their experiences at Gorman and write at least four Haiku to reflect their individual experiences. Here are some of them:

Academics

Attention Seniors! Graduation is rapidly approaching. Your Caps & Gowns have been ordered. The process for picking up your Cap & Gown is as follows:

Step 1. Please log on to your Naviance Family Connection and go to the Colleges section. Click on Set Attending College and add the school that you are planning to attend. This is an important step as we will use this information for the Graduation program.

STEP 2. Once step 1 is completed, you can pick up your Cap & Gown ticket from Mr. McAllister or Mrs. Burford in Student Services. Without this ticket you will not be able to pick up your Cap & Gown.

If you are not attending a four-year school, please see Mr. McAllister in the College Counseling Office, to make sure you are in compliance with any application that you may be trying to complete.

Graduation is an exciting busy time for all of us. Please listen to the daily announcements and check your emails for helpful information with this process. For example, in order to have your final transcripts sent to your selected school, all of your 100 community service hours must be turned in to Campus Ministry and all accounts with the Business Office must be current.

Counselor’s Corner It is hard to believe that the school year is coming to a close. That means that finals are right around the corner. Included in this month’s issue are some study tips that will help you “ace” those finals!

Tip 1: Start early - Preparation for exams should begin earlier than the day before the test. Get started at least two weeks before the exam.

Tip 2: Organize - Begin by making a calendar outlining a daily schedule of topics for review.

Cover a small amount of material for each class each day. Every time you complete a topic, give yourself a mini review.

Tip 3: Outline - Once you have decided what you need to study and how much time you need to spend studying, it is time to actually study. One of the best ways is to make outlines. As you read over your textbook and class notes, write a brief summary for each topic. Highlight the areas in your outline that were most troublesome. When you have finished with all the material, you will have an outline you can review.

Tip 4: Make flashcards - Similar to outlining, making flashcards is a really helpful technique for studying. By writing down the information

from your outline, you are already doing half the studying. Once the flashcards are complete, you will have a portable study packet to look over.

Tip 5: Get help - If you are having trouble memorizing something or a particular concept is just not sinking in, get help before it’s too late. Ask your teacher to go over a glitch you might be having. Or if memorizing 200 vocabulary words seems like too much to do, recruit your family members to quiz you with index cards.

Tip 6: Sleep - You need at least seven hours of sleep a night to function. Tests are designed to make you think. If you are sleep-deprived, you won’t be able to remember any of the information you worked so hard to cram into your brain.

Tip 8: Don’t rush - You have spent at least two weeks studying, so what’s another couple of minutes? Work through the exam slowly and read all the questions before answering them. If you are done before the time is up, look over your answers.

Source: Next Step Magazine Remember, final exams are worth 20% of your semester grade, so it is important that you do well.

• Summer Enrichment t-shirts will be available after May 1st. They may be purchased online or in the Campus Store. The cost is $10.

• Students are not allowed any absences during Summer Enrichment sessions, so please plan any time away accordingly.

• Summer Enrichment tuition must be paid in full

by Friday, May 17th.
