LA Youth Day 2019 Youth Day 2019 took place this past March at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress and drew more than 12,000 young people from across the LA Archdiocese and beyond. This annual event, for students in grades 9 through 12, is planned by young people, for young people. This year's theme for Youth Day 2019 was Trust! God’s Gotchu. This theme was discerned by a select group of high school students from across the five regions of the Los Angeles Archdiocese who were challenged to create a theme that speaks to today's young people while also capturing the essence of the readings. Trust! God’s Gotchu was the foundation for the day's activities – from prayers, to music, skits and reflections.

Christian Service Hours As the end of the school year approaches, we want to remind students to use the summer break to either get caught up, or get ahead on their Christian Service Hours requirement. We all know how busy life gets when school is in session, so we encourage students to take advantage of the time they have in the summer. Consider some of the many organizations on our approved list, or sign in to x2VOL and click on the calendar to find opportunities to serve. Organizations such as Catholic Charities, The Las Vegas Rescue Mission, The Blind Center, Catholic Worker, and The Salvation Army are all considered Direct Service and are on our Approved List. There are many marginalized people in our community who can benefit from seeing the face of peace and love that we can offer through our Christian Service.

Michael Bedsaul '21, completed his Eagle Scout project with the help of a lot of Bishop Gorman volunteers! Michael's goal was to create a medical clinic at Catholic Charities, a much-needed facility in a location that would provide assistance to the neediest of the needy in Las Vegas. The two-day project took a lot of manpower... in Michael's own words "There was a powerhouse group of BGHS volunteers over the weekend. They arrived early, worked hard, and made a BIG difference to the whole project's success. It was an amazing time of spirit, teamwork, and service. I was so proud to be a Gael!" Michael, thank you for all you did to help the clients of Catholic Charities!

Senior Service Celebration What do you do with a group of nearly 330 seniors who have completed over 33,000 Christian Service Hours? Well, WE CELEBRATE THEM! Tuesday, March 19, was our special day to honor all seniors who have completed their service hours obligation and are one step closer to graduation! It was a full day of music, snacks, drinks, and fun intended as a special "thank you" for all the wonderful service provided to our Las Vegas community by the Class of 2019! The fellowship of being able to join their friends before school, between classes, and on their lunch break was a great bonding experience. We are nearly at 100% completed, the Class of 2019 should be very proud of that. Great job, seniors!
Academic Advisors Juniors SAT/ACT Tests It is highly recommended that juniors take the SAT and/or an additional ACT in the spring of their junior year. If you have not already done so, please consider the June SAT and the June ACT (late registration fees may apply) or the July ACT. You can register for these tests at www.collegeboard.org and www.actstudent.org, respectively.
ACT Results This is a reminder that according to ACT, the test results will be delivered 5-8 weeks after they receive the booklets for scoring. The Counseling Department does not have access to these results prior to the students, so please do not contact the counselors inquiring about scores ahead of time. If students provided their email address as instructed, they will receive an electronic score report and a copy will be mailed to the students’ homes. Bishop Gorman does not receive a printed copy of each student’s
AP Students AP Exams will be administered during the second and third weeks of May. You have been preparing for these exams all year and you will do great. Be sure to pay attention to the announcements and to your teachers for your exam location, date and time. Be on time and good luck.
A Good Study Place With the second semester quickly coming to a close, it is important to prepare and get ready for final exams and AP exams. Here are helpful ideas to keep you focused! • Is my Study Place available to me whenever I need it? If you are sharing a Study Place, work out a schedule so that you know when you can use it. • Is my Study Place free from interruptions? Uninterrupted study time is important. Hang a DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door turn your phone off.

Athletic News Geico National Championship Congratulations to our men’s basketball team as they were invited to the 8-Team GEICO National Championships in New York City. This was the first year that Nevada teams were approved to participate in the ultra-exclusive fully sponsored event. The Gaels were matched up against the #1 team in the country, La Lumiere, IN, and the game was televised live on ESPNU. Although Bishop Gorman didn’t win the game, they put up a great effort, losing in double overtime to their undefeated opponent. Will McClendon '21 led the Gaels with 22 points. Noah Taitz '20 finished with 16 points. Isaiah Cottrell '20 had 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Zaon Collins 21 had 12 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds. Senior Chance Michels finished his Gorman career with 9 points and 7 rebounds, making three 3-pointers. It was a great year for the Gaels, finishing ranked in the Top 25 Nationally in every poll. Zaon Collins, Isaiah Cottrell, Will McClendon, and Noah Taitz were all named to the All-State team.
Spring Sports Bishop Gorman is currently participating in its Spring Sports Season. Our baseball, softball, men’s golf, men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s track & field are currently competing in League play and getting ready for playoffs. Check back next month for season updates as they get ready for end of the year Desert Region and State Tournaments. Our baseball and softball teams both hosted tournaments in the pre-season. The 9th Annual Kick Off the Season Softball Tournament went well as teams from the West Coast competed in a 3-day event at Bishop Gorman High School. The Desert Classic Baseball Tournament had teams from all over the West Coast as well as Canada, South Dakota, and Florida. The four-day, 16-team event was a big hit again this year.
Let There Be Light! April 11, 2019, was a special night for Bishop Gorman Baseball and Softball. At exactly 7:30 PM in the evening, the first pitch was thrown out by baseball pitcher John Gaughan '19 and Softball Pitcher Sarah Aguilar '21. As the catchers caught the ball, the lights came on and the teams ran out and played catch. The lights for the Bishop Gorman baseball and softball fields were generously donated by the Gaughan family. We are appreciative of their generous contributions to Bishop Gorman High School.

Bishop Gorman Celebrates
Advancement
37th Annual Knight of the Gael On Thursday, March 28th parents, alumni and friends gathered to honor Mary Alice '80 and Scott Nielson at the 37th Annual Knight of the Gael. Along with their children, Nick '15, Aly '17, Caroline ’19, and over 550 guests, we celebrated this very special couple who have been active members of the Bishop Gorman community for decades. Their dedication to family, Bishop Gorman High School, and the Las Vegas valley is an inspiration to all. There are no limits to their generosity and we are proud to call them Gaels. We couldn’t have done it without the help of our partners, Red Rock Resort Casino and Spa, Station Casinos, Breakthru Beverage Nevada, Lifetouch Photography, Encore, Michael E. Minden and Five Star Creative. Thanks to our all of our sponsors, especially our Platinum Sponsors: Golden Entertainment, Stillpoint Center for Spiritual Development, the Families of Frank & Lorenzo Fertitta, the Ellis Family, and The Tony & Renee Marlon Charitable Foundation. A very special thanks to our contributors and student performers that helped make the evening extra special… Mrs. Elena Ferrante-Martin and the Gaels Theater Guild; Mr. Geoff Neuman, the orchestra, Zach Geinzer '19, Mr. Kyle Bissantz and the drum line; Mr. Jimmy Gleich '01 & ASG, and the evening’s announcer, Krish Madhura '21.

Study Place, cont. • Is my Study Place free from distractions? Most students study best in a quiet environment. If you find that playing a stereo or TV improves your mood, keep the volume low. • Does my Study Place contain all the study materials I need? Keep reference sources and supplies handy. • Does my Study Space contain a large enough desk or table? Use a desk or table that is large enough to hold everything you need. Allow room for writing and avoid clutter. • Does my Study Place have enough storage space? Keep your desktop or other work surface clear of unnecessary materials that can get in the way. • Does my Study Place have a comfortable chair? A chair that is not comfortable can cause discomfort that will interfere with your studying. A chair that is too comfortable might make you sleepy. Select a chair in which you can sit for long periods while maintaining your attention. • Does my Study Place have enough light? The amount of light you need depends on what you are doing; be sure you can see without any strain or discomfort. • Does my Study Place have a comfortable temperature? Too warm, you might become sleepy; too cold may slow you down. Select a temperature at which your mind and body function best.
Having a good Study Plan is important for effective studying.
Kairos Retreats
KAIROS is a three day retreat for the 11th and 12th graders. This retreat helps them learn more about themselves, their relationships with others, and their relationship with God. Students and adult chaperones discuss how living a Christian life can help guide their future and strengthen relationships with family, friends, and God. KAIROS is held approximately 2-3 times during the school year and is led by seniors who have attended a previous retreat.
