GAELS Helping Our Community Recently, several Bishop Gorman Gaels volunteered at Operation Homefront's event. Operation Homefront provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of our service members and wounded warriors. If you would like to volunteer for one of their upcoming events, please stop by Campus Ministry for more information.

Catholic Charities Volunteers Bishop Gorman students have started the year with some great community service opportunities.

Pictured from L to R: are students Abigail Hobson '19, Maya Martinez '19, Lauren Dennis '20 and Marisol Miller '19 volunteering at the food pantry for Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada. Volunteers often engage in activities like stocking grocery food and helping low-income Nevadans shop for supplemental food items needed.

Congratulations to Madeline Thomas '20, on completing 110 Christian Service hours prior to starting her sophomore year! Way to go!

Miracle Minute

Hurricane Harvey

On Thursday, September 7, Bishop Gorman hosted a “Miracle Minute” Mite Box donation. During first period, classes had 60 seconds to donate money to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. In just one minute, the Bishop Gorman on-campus community raised $11,080.15! Since the collected donations will be sent through Catholic Charities, every single penny will go to those affected in Houston. Our top three fundraising classes during Miracle Minute were Mr. Kerry Lieb’s first period with $1,149.61, Miss Kristin Block’s first period with $703.69 and Miss Mary Wilson’s first period with $547.67.

A very special thank you to the Bishop Gorman community members who came together to assist Project 150 and local teens throughout the Las Vegas valley. Our team of 50+ volunteers assisted with the distribution of "Back to School" supplies and snacks that had been collected the previous week during our school's final summer school session. We look forward to collaborating again with Project 150 next summer with an even larger team of volunteers. Go Gaels!

This workshop was geared toward giving tips on what schools are looking for in the essay, how to brainstorm ideas for their essay, writing a rough draft, and finishing the essay.

L ast May the C ollege C ounseling Department invited the rising senior class of 2018 to a College Application Camp scheduled during the week of August 8th through August 11th.

All of the counselors participated in making this Camp a success. A total of 186 seniors took advantage of the camp, most have completed their Common Application and have matched their application to Naviance which is very important as we use Naviance as the electronic tool to send all of their transcripts and letters of recommendation. This senior class is a very strong academic class and we in the Counseling Department are looking forward to their college application journey.

The camp was organized by alphabet, however, students were allowed to choose a day to fit their schedule. The intent of the camp was to help seniors: • Organize their college list • Set-up a Common Application account • Participate in an essay workshop

admissions representatives will be available to answer questions.

Internship Program The Bishop Gorman Internship Program was established in 2012 with seven participating businesses and has since come a long way. Thanks to the excellent job our students have done year after year and the support of our community, the program continues to grow and prosper. In the program’s sixth year, 18 businesses provided internships to 27 juniors going into their senior year during the summer of 2017.

We are always looking for new opportunities for our students. If you are interested in hosting a Bishop Gorman student as an intern for the summer of 2018, please contact Internship Program Coordinator, Lauren Blasek '04 lblasek@bishopgorman.org for more information.

Alumni, parents, and friends of Bishop Gorman make up the group of supporters of this program and provide our students with priceless opportunities throughout the Las Vegas Valley. We are proud to have ongoing partnerships with businesses and welcome new participants each year. Two students, Anthony Perconte ’18 and Amanda Paez ’18, had the opportunity to intern at one of our new internship sites this year, Centennial Hills Hospital. Human Resources Director, Gina Lewis, said “this was a wonderful experience and Centennial Hills would absolutely participate again.”

The Internship Program offers Bishop Gorman students an experience not many high school students receive, contributing to the college-preparatory curriculum. Through direct observation, reflection and evaluation, students gain an understanding of the internship site’s work, how these potentially relate to their academic study, as well as a clearer perspective on and better understanding of their career goals and objectives. “My advice for future interns in this program is to enter it with a complete open mind,” said Taylor Brown '18, who interned at Alston Construction. “Keep your options open because you never know what you may like or may not like. Being able to see several different businesses throughout my internship has allowed me to get a better grasp on who I am as a person and what I want in life.”
