Gaels Win OneNevada Cup Title Bishop Gorman is proud to be the NIAA Div. 4A 2018-2019 OneNevada Champions. The scoring system awards points to member schools based on their varsity teams’ performances in the classrooms, at the sporting venues and with the Citizenship Through Sports initiative. Each of the three major categories in high school activities – academics, athletics and sportsmanship – are weighted equally, and boys’ and girls’ programs are combined in the standings table. Spirit and student council / leadership points were added after the conclusion of the winter season. Points were deducted at the conclusion of the spring season for ejections and other acts of unsportsmanlike conduct.

Senior Farewell from Dean Rivera Congratulations to the Class of 2019! Since August of 2015, each member of our distinguished class has left an indelible mark upon the Bishop Gorman community. Whether in a classroom, on a playing field, or stage… or perhaps strolling through the halls, sitting at your lunch tables, engaging in community service, participating in a Mass, or sharing your time and talents with others in clubs and organizations, every single one of you has impressed your teachers, administrators, counselors, campus ministers, coaches, club moderators and peers. To that end, as you move forward to begin your journey again as freshmen, we are confident that each of you are well prepared to take on the challenges of the world and will strive to leave every environment and community better because of your contributions. In closing, we offer a gentle reminder to always hold our GAELS acronym and your class motto close to your heart, Believe In The Dream. Finally, I am asking each of you in the graduating Class of 2019 to reflect upon the wise words that were shared by your fellow classmates during our awards night, Baccalaureate Mass, and graduation ceremony: “Take Risks,” “Bloom where you are planted,” and “never forget the important elements of a proper goodbye.” Thank you Class of 2019 for the plethora of memories and always take comfort in knowing that here at Bishop Gorman High School we will never part ways with goodbye; instead, we prefer to wave goodbye with… until we meet again. Wishing everyone continued blessings and success! “All things you ask for in prayer, you will receive if you have faith.” -Matthew 21:22 Dr. Tessa Rivera, Dean Class of 2019; Believe In The Dream

Campus Ministry Spotlight on Service Our Matthew 25 Board is a very successful student-run group who make all of the decisions on how our Mite Box monies are to be distributed. We collected just under $65,000 this year alone, and through social service agencies our Board was able to provide for over 172 families out of the hundreds and hundreds of applications they received. John Dennis '20, Nathan Specht '21, and Matteo Portelli '20 played key roles this year with the Matthew 25 Board. They completely took charge and guided the other students in making sometimes very difficult decisions about who to support and how much to give them. These three young men were diligent in their duties and never missed a meeting. It required time, organization and a logical, yet empathetic, attitude and that is why they deserve our SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE!
¢
John Dennis: “The experience on the Matthew 25 Board can be hard to describe in words. It exemplifies, to me, stewardship, since God gave us the power to take care of his creation. But, most importantly, it gives me a sense of peace and purpose knowing that we are helping the less fortunate within the Las Vegas community.”

Nathan Specht: “The Matthew 25 Board is the hope for the suffering. It is the prospect of bringing someone from a low point to a point of stability. It is allowing the marginalized to share their stories. It is making time for those who don’t have any.” Mateo Portelli: “A fundamental element of the Christian faith, and indeed the majority of the world’s beliefs, is service. Having the distinct privilege of serving on the Matthew 25 Board for a year and a half now has enabled me to engage with my peers in the most fundamental form of service possible: Charity. Being able to help allocate over $55,000 donated by the students, faculty and staff of Bishop Gorman High School to hundreds of teenagers and families across southern Nevada is an opportunity I wouldn’t trade for the world. I’m so excited for what’s to come.”
and try to get ahead.
Thank You! We had an impressive last day collection for Mite box of $4,267.58. We were able to help over 170 families and individuals this year through the generosity of our Gorman community. We are so grateful for the support of all. Because of all of you, families were able to stay in their homes, pay their utilities for one more month, receive much needed medication, stay together as families and so much more. The social workers of Las Vegas tell us every day that the Bishop Gorman community is truly a Godsend to many families with nowhere else to turn. We are the only school with a program like this and often the last resort for finding emergency funds for their clients. They asked us to share “thank you” from the bottom of their hearts in the name of all their clients.
Superstar Fundraiser For "RELAY FOR LIFE" Is A Gorman Gael! Ethan Nguyen '21, has set a new record for the Relay For Life fundraising by high school students. Singlehandedly, Ethan chose to reach out to friends and family, as well as forming a Bishop Gorman Relay For Life Team and raised over $5,000 in the fight against cancer. This disease took on a more intense meaning when Ethan’s mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2015. She continues her battle with the support of her wonderful family and many friends. Great job, Ethan!

Camp!
Rising Seniors
Rising seniors are invited to attend the 4th Annual College Application Camp at Bishop Gorman High School. The task of applying to college is often the most stressful part of the senior year experience. The goal for the College Application Camp is to help lower the stress of finding the right fit and meeting deadlines. By the end of our session, every senior who participates will have: • A complete Common Application (except the essay) • A complete academic & activities resume • A better understanding of the college essay • A prioritized game plan for applying to college The dates were chosen to coincide with the release of the Common Application for the 2019-2020 school year. The camp is 100% free! Competition for admissions and scholarships is fierce and applications need to be impeccable. Essays need to show personality and stand out in a stack of hundreds or even thousands of applications. This camp is a step in the right direction to give our students that edge.

The spring sports season had several teams and individuals who excelled. Congratulations to all of them! The 2019 Bishop Gorman Swim & Dive Team had a season not to be soon forgotten. The campaign was filled with its share of ups and downs, but at the end of the season, the Gaels should be proud of what was accomplished this season. On the team front, the girl’s team finished the regular season 5-1. At the State Meet in Carson City, the ladies finished in 3rd, a 2-place improvement from the 2018 State Tournament. The boy swimmers finished the season 4-2 with two losses against perennial powers Coronado and Green Valley. With only a couple of seniors and a solid underclassmen roster, the boys also took 3rd Place at the Desert Regional. Moving on 3 relays and 2 individuals, the Gaels took 8th Place at the NIAA state meet. Individually, the Gaels made a name for themselves at the Championship Meet with some star power. Audrey Yu '22 left the NIAA state meet with 4 state championships. Her performances in the 50 and 100 Freestyle earned her AllAmerican status. Audrey was a key leg on two relays that took home gold medals at the state meet, dominating the competition and setting a new school record in the 400 Free Relay. Emma Breslin '20 picked up 2 Medals in the 50 Free and 100 Breast. Caroline Anderson '19 and Devyn Wingender '19 also made it individually in the 100 Fly and 200 IM, respectively. On the Spring Boards, Olivia Gordon '20 set a new school record for 11-dives and added a bronze medal at the State Meet. Though not as deep, the boys showed they could step up as a team and qualified for State in all 3 relays. Individual State Qualifiers were Morgan Ma '20 in the 50 Free and Dylan Becker '20 in the 500 Free. Morgan raced to a bronze medal at the State Meet. Dylan’s performance at the Regional Championship also set a school record and All-American consideration status.

Winning the first round of the playoffs against Somerset 13-7, they made it to the Southern Nevada Championship once again. Although they lost a close game to Coronado, the League did recognize several of the standout players: Midfielder Regan Schunk '20 was named as a US Lacrosse All-American and Ava Adamson '21 was honored with the Nevada Lacrosse Association’s Sportsmanship award. Although lacrosse is still growing in Las Vegas, this sport continues to be fast paced and competitive. Miracle Minute
In March, Bishop Gorman students, faculty and staff participated in a Miracle Minute for Africa. Bishop Gorman raised $7,000! The funds are to be spent over the next few years building classrooms and other capital improvements at Mr. Jimmy Gleich’s schools in Africa. The first of the trips to begin using those funds took place in April. Mrs. Portz and her husband Dr. Stephen Portz, joined Mr. Gleich, and made the trek to Ghana. While in the country, the team did some great work; from painting a church meeting hall, to building a brand-new classroom. The next time Mr. Gleich is in Ghana will be in June, at that time the team will be embarking on a huge project: constructing a 24x24 foot multi-purpose room at the school. Thanks to the generosity of the Bishop Gorman community, something as wonderful and useful as this multi-purpose room will be possible for the students. “The generosity of the Bishop Gorman community will ensure that the students in our schools in Ghana will continue to thrive and have as many opportunities as possible.” - Jimmy Gleich “My husband, Steve, and I have been changed forever by our experience in Africa. For these beautiful children at the orphanages in Bethel and Amedzofe, life is simple and very happy. They require so little and give back so much. The love they show toward each other makes them function as a wonderful family. Neither of us cried when we left because we KNOW we are going back to them for sure! We can’t thank Jimmy and Think Kindness enough for exposing us to one of the best experiences either of us could ever hope to have!” - Susie Portz
